Hey guys

So I have a video file which is .mp4

I want to watch it on my TV as opposed to on the computer. Either by putting it on a USB, or on a DVD.

I've googled a few things, and nothing is really working.

How do I best turn my .mp4 file into a normal video file that will play?

For reference, most of the files I put on my USB and play through my PS3 to my TV are .avi files. So yeah, without much messing around - how do I convert a .mp4 into a .avi file?

Cheers!

Try it as an mp4 and see how it goes. Should require less processing than an avi.

What TV do you have?

Anyway, this looks like it could work:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/

Secondary choice:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/svideoconverter/

If you have VLC media player it has a built in mp4-avi converter IIRC.

Try AutoGK, AVI is just the container file so it might be the video format.

Or just dl a dif file, Mp4 usually work, but stay away from Mkv and x264

Also you're a very naughty boy.

I have VLC and quicktime on my computer. The files will work properly on quicktime, but on VLC the picture just shows up black whilst the sound works fine. It's weird - usually VLC plays EVERY file type I've had, but won't for these for some reason

Tried putting the mp4 files on the USB and into the PS3 - unsupported data for the PS3 it says.

 yep it is a downloaded file

I'll try your link tonight mack - cheers

BTW my TV is one of those bigarse 55" LCD type ones. From memory it's a Samsung - we got it on a "cheap deal" and did some pricematch dodginess between about 3 places to get it for real cheap. I don't think it's the TVs fault, because I run it through the PS3 - I think it's just what file types the PS3 can read from the USB which is the issue.

Is it a smart tv with wireless? Hook up Samsung AllShare and play it directly from your PC :) (well, via your modem/router). Works a treat.

WDTV LIVE, works a treat

And if you want to run a media server rather then connect to shared drives, use PS3 Media server.

While on the topic, if you have a PS3 download PS3 Media server (don't get the latest version) and you can stream from your PS3
