Without getting into too much detail about how they measure value of TV rights, doesn't AFL/NRL have a lot more games played across the season?

Yep.

NRL 2013 = 192 regular season, plus 3 State of Origin and 9 finals
AFL 2013 = 198 regular season, plus 9 finals.
A-League 2012-13 = 135 regular season, plus 5 finals and according to above Socceroos.

I'm not sure what else comes into play. I think for the NRL the Indigenous All-stars match, city-country, lower-grade grand finals, the ANZAC test and other tests are all shown on Channel 9 and are part of the rights deals. I presume the NAB cup is part of the AFL deal as well but I'm not an AFL person so don't know. I presume ACL is also part of Fox's football deal, but again I don't know.

But the clear conclusion is that just in terms of matches, the AFL and NRL provide much more. When you combine this with the greater ratings of both codes (even if there is a finals slump at the moment) and the greater breaks that both codes have to provide for advertising, it is clear why they command so much money.

Regular stoppages in NRL and AFL allow for more tv advertisements, and companies are willing to pay more for advertising in those events than in A-League games.

Not to mention that the AFL play some 198 games per season compared to the A-League's 135.

AFL/League has more room to put in ads - this gives it higher value.

Funny thing is, NRL bent over backwards to give the channels everything they could want to maximise ratings, impeding them in other areas like crowds and providing sponsorship opportunities to smaller teams, all so the NRL could flash that "b" in its headline to match the AFL. Yep it says something that I can watch more live matches on free to air tv of AFL in Brisbane than NRL each weekend.

I don't get Gem. Fox doesn't show Gem SD and I don't have an antenna.

is there still analogue in vic?

Yeah, there's still analogue signal in most areas. I don't think it's being switched off until some time in 2014.

It says a lot about the NRL when they assemble a bunch of ex-NRL players to play in a band for non match entertainment.

Both the AFL and NRL rights were overvalued.

That said, Nine deserve this for their shitty treatment of NRL in Melbourne. We should get Storm games live, especially finals.
