It was due to this defeat that Shankly came to realise that to win the European Cup he would have to have a more technical possesion based team. The rest is history.

Liverpool started doing a lot of passing work in a diamond/square with a dot on the training track. One player in the middle would pass the ball backwards, forwards and sideways with the outside players.

No video, but the infamous slap by an unnamed 1860 Munich Youth Team player on Franz Beckenbauer is crucial to the history of Bayern and 1860.

In the late 50s a teenaged Kaiser is about to sign for 1860 Munich, the club he supports and adores.

1860 are the team of the working class and at that point the more popular and successful of the 2 Munich teams.

Just before he joins 1860, his current club plays the 1860 youth team. The 1860 players know Franz is about to join their team and decide to rough him up as part of his 'hazing'.

During the match he is hacked and harassed and, late on in the game, slapped in the face by an 1860 player.

Disgusted, Franz decides at that precise point he'll never play for a club with such unsporting players.

Instead, he signs for Bayern Munich. Not only that, but he encourages his friends, also about to sign for 1860, to do the same.

Those friends were Gerd Muller and Sepp Maier.

Fast forward to the 70s and Franz and his mates have led Bayern to 3 European cups and Germany to the World Cup.

The momentum from Franz's defection continues for another 40 years, with Bayern winning 22 more Bundesliga titles and becoming one of Europe's superclubs.

1860 are meanwhile struggling in Bundesliga 2 with a fraction of the support they once enjoyed.

All because of a single slap.

Great topic.

Here's to Lev Yashin - before him goalkeepers for the most part stayed fixed to their line and didn't punch the ball. He deserves bonus points for the cool black outfit and black cap.

The rest is history.
