Article in the Daily Telegraph (I can't find it online yet) reporting a 400k transfer for Mark Birighitti to walk away from his final year contracted to Newy to join Bayer Leverkusen. Birra has the same agent as Kruse, who has orchestrated the deal. Middelby (CEO) is saying nothing has been signed off yet but there is player negotiations taking place
Easily our best player last season and just behind Tags this season

Will be competing with Leno who is younger than him and already played 72 times in the Bundesliga (if they even plan for him to be #2)

Saw this article. It also said that Brillante might be moving to Europe soon as well (\:d/).
As for Leno, the article stated that theirs a possibility that he may be moving elsewhere.

Would be shattered to see Birra go! He's been brilliant for us, but it was only a matter of time til he went OS. Good luck to him if he can get a spot at a good club, providing he gets game time of course. At least he'll be here for the rest of the season.

You'll have to zoom in to read it. I couldn't find the article online. Not on Daily Telegraph's site or Newcastle Heralds.

Would rather him do a Mat Ryan and find a club where he would be a regular. I'm sure he could achieve that somewhere in the Eredivisie or the Belgian League. He is a fine goalkeeper.
But if he did join Bayer Leverkusen, that rounds off an impressive list of Australian keepers at huge clubs:
Mat Ryan- Club Brugge Mitch Langerak- Borussia Dortmund Mark Schwarzer- Chelsea Brad Jones- Liverpool Mark Birighitti- Bayer Leverkusen
Disappointing though that only one of them is a regular starter. Really hope Langerak can find a lower Bundesliga club in the off season and Birra finds a club where he'd be a regular.

Yeah, great move on paper...but I'm also in the "would like the move be for a number 1 spot" camp.

Hewould do well to move to a euro club as a starter. He would give Langerak a real run for his money at #2 for the NT if he was getting 35 games a year

Quote:THE Jets’ investment in youth is poised to deliver a million-dollar pay day.
Young guns Mark Birighitti, Josh Brillante and Adam Taggart have attracted interest from European clubs which is expected to materialise into firm offers at the end of the A-League season.
A representative from German giant Bayer Leverkusen was reported to be in Newcastle last week to cast an eye over Birighitti, who has backed up a stellar debut campaign with another commanding season.
Jets chief executive Robbie Middleby admitted ‘‘some negotiations have taken place’’ regarding Birighitti, who had European scouts come out and watch him last year before adding, ‘‘but there has been nothing signed off as yet’’.
It was a similar scenario with Brillante after his breakout display for the Young Socceroos at the FIFA under-20 World Cup in Turkey last year, highlighted by a 25-metre wonder strike in a 2-1 loss to El Salvador.
That led to a Socceroos call-up for the East Asian Cup and his first senior cap in a 4-3 loss to China.
Lazio, Everton and Schalke were among clubs to make inquiries and the Herald understands Brillante’s agent and former Socceroo Vinnie Grella has since been in talks with a number of Italian clubs.
Birighitti, Brillante and Taggart have a year to run on their contracts. Of the three, the Herald has learned that Brillante, who has an Italian passport, is the only one not to have negotiated a transfer ceiling in his current contract.
Transfer fees for Birighitti and Taggart are understood to be capped at $400,000.
Birighitti is managed by John Grimaud, who orchestrated Socceroo Robbie Kruse’s move to Bayer Leverkusen last year.
Joel Griffiths was the last Jet to be sold overseas when he linked with Beijing Guoan for an undisclosed fee, believed to be $1million, in 2009.
James Holland (AZ Alkmaar, $650,000) and Nick Carle (Gençlerbirligi $600,000) are the only Jets players to move directly to Europe.
Taggart is the latest to emerge as an overseas target.
The 21-year-old is leading the race for the Golden Boot and Jets coach Clayton Zane, who spent six years in Europe at Molde, Lillestrom and Belgium powerhouse Anderlecht before a knee injury cut his career short, has no doubts that the striker has the game for a move to a bigger league.
‘‘The strong points for Tags is that he is a goal-scorer and is so hungry,’’ Zane said after Taggart’s match-winner against Melbourne Heart
‘‘He has that turn of pace that will allow him to go and play in a decent league in Europe.
‘‘For him now it is about making sure we turn him into the best professional he can be. Making sure he does the little things on and off the field right so when he does get that chance, which I’m sure will come, that he is ready for it.
‘‘That could be sooner rather than later.’’
Although reluctant to look too far ahead, Taggart admitted ‘‘like all young players, I want to end up in Europe’’.
‘‘That is the place to develop and test yourself,’’ he said.
‘‘Even before Clacka was head coach, we had spoken about Europe a few times. If you do get that opportunity, what it is like, what you have to do, what good players over there are doing ... we have spoken about a lot of things.
‘‘It is something definitely in the back of my mind and a long-term goal.
‘‘You only get to the long-term goal by completing short-term goals like scoring goals, working hard at training, keeping your body right, staying focused. Stay on top of all those things [and] you are headed in the right direction.’’
With the Jets anticipated to lose $1million this season, the transfer fees would dramatically improve the club’s bottom line.
Marquee striker Emile Heskey, believed to be on $750,000, is expected to return to England at the end of the season, which would free up money for a play at Victory’s Brazilian playmaker Gui Finkler. source

Newcastle Herald reckon we're signing Finkler as marquee if heskey leaves.
Also Taylor Regan (in b4 "he's ugly") and Biraz had a punch up at training today. Regan had blood all over his face

Finkler is not marquee material at all, we'll end up overpaying him
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

crimsoncrusoe wrote:marconi101 wrote:Finkler is not marquee material at all, we'll end up overpaying him Apparently he isn't even better than Kosta Barbarouses.](*,) . Just putting this out there - Dare I say is Finkler a little over-rated due to his flashes of brilliance, aka that late match winning free kick and cameos off the bench previous? But now that he's a regular in the first XI, featuring most of the last few games - I dare suggest that it seems his impact is not a great as some may've hoped and indeed, in terms of the wider team, the form of Victory has not been great recent times? So Finkler has not made a great difference there and indeed, previously, when he was on the comeback and a super-sub from the bench, Victory were still showing flickers of promise - but losing Nichols to the J-League was the big blow and not even Finkler has quite filled that void, well not in the same way? Evidentially they are different players/individuals, but again, full matches over a few starts or more in a row - and he's still a 'good quality' import, no doubt, but he may be not much more than that and certainly not a marquee or his form/lack of impact in a poor form side, at the moment wouldn't warrant it? Really? I don't see Finkler as a marquee at all. Very good player, but also not one that takes the game by the scruff of the neck on a regular or even semi-regular basis. He can usually represent a threat, mostly on the passing side of things, and may have more assists if MV had some better finishing. crimsoncrusoe wrote:marconi101 wrote:Finkler is not marquee material at all, we'll end up overpaying him Apparently he isn't even better than Kosta Barbarouses.](*,) . When you've got Rogic and Troisi in there, and very little in CB and on the Wing (while Troisi can play there, largely been ineffective as a winger), then you have to make a cut somewhere. Kosta on the wing is better than Troisi, and apart from James the others would be Pain (better coming off the bench) and Nabbout (no thanks). Troisi has shown that his best spot is through the middle of the park. Also, he helps with defensive pressure on the forward half (even though he does leave some to be desired) by just being faster than Rogic and Finkler. I find that if MV struggle to keep the ball, Finkler and Rogic as the first line of defense can be passed a bit too easily as they aren't the quickest of players. Would hate to see what'd happen against Asian sides that are usually full of speedy/technically good players.

Marquee spots should be for high quality players who cannot fit in the salary cap, not solid players looking for a payrise
