Depends on what you're after.

If you enjoy sitting in trafic or on a train for hours on end to go to work or any where reasonable, then sure a big city like Sydney or Melbourne is perfect for you.

sounds like the "IT Manager" has hit hard times with his thrifty tips, buying his meat in bulk, turning off standby devices and getting rorted on solar installation costs

the best place in Australia to live is IN Australia....i love all of it, i used to have offices in sydney, melbourne, brisvegas , perth and singapore, i loved travelling to these places, i did alot of work in adelaide and i loved it there as well......i prefer 4 seasons, so the really hot and humid places i can only manage for holidays, can't live there

I know this might be a generalisation and I've been to Melbourne heaps of times and lived in Sydney most of my life, but I find that Melbourne people are more friendlier than Sydney people.
Sydney is a bit of a try hard L.A.

When I explain Australia to Swedish people I say
Melbourne is kinda like NY with fashion, shopping, events and restaurants. (More cosmopolitan)
Sydney is like LA , beach, expensive, celebs, try hards
Brisbane/ Qld is like Texas - self explanatory

i live in Perth right now, and i would only recommend it to people who have a solid paycheck. So expensive, the place im living right now is 3 bed, 2 bath and its 450 a week, the same place in QLD would be 300-350. Fucking miners.
