Its an interesting argument though. On a side note, I believe that it is a common misconception that alcohol reveals the true nature of someone.

Alcohol alters, among other things, frontal lobe function. Part of the frontal lobe is to control inhibitions, but the main part is our personality.

Alcohol alters our personality, rather than revealing it. I'm sure we've all come across people who change to a different person when drunk.

I've seen the effects of frontal lobe dementia completely change someone, I mean completely change them.

Again that doesn't excuse bad behaviour whilst drunk. If you get drunk then you should wear the consequences of your actions, but alcohol does not reveal our true nature, rather, it changes it.

No. What I meant was that whilst we might mouth sweet nothings in public regards women if you strip away the inhibitions with a little bit of social lubricant you get closer to what somebody is really thinking.

Its a poor, low socio-economic thing. You would probably find the same harassment in a poor white neighbourhood.

Years ago you would hear racist jokes and terminology all the time. These days if someone starts up on one or calls someone a fairly derogatory term then they're pulled up pretty quick.

Maybe most blokes aren't like that but something I took away from a course I did once was the saying "the standard you walk past is the standard you accept."

Maybe it would help if we didn't "walk by" so often.

As for low socio economic areas, go to any street on a nightclub strip in Australia and tell me that, when full of piss and vinegar, white blokes aren't the equal or worse than their black brethren in Harlem.

But this video is dominated by people from a lower socio-economic background. 80% of the clips are from one neighbourhood, Harlem.

Not that that excuses the behaviour, but there has been a sense lately that ALL men need to stop doing this, or that this is a problem for all men.

Absolutely. The video exploits racial and cultural stereotypes in order to barely make a really shitty point about sexism, it says more about the declining logical and moral trajectory of modern day feminism than it does about gender discrimination IMO.

It's hardly surprising that the least empathetic person on this forum thinks this sort of behaviour is OK. (Or even that someone else may actually have a point. I suppose that's the definition of lack of empathy.)

They had a lady one JJJ's Hack program one day and she was talking about sexual harassment and the sort of thing that happens to girls every day and how it's generally laughed off by blokes as "you should take it as a compliment sort of thing".

She then went on to talk about more extreme cases of harassment including having blokes rub up against them on public transport and even as far as some girls having been ejaculated on whilst travelling on a bus. Guests were then invited to call in and talk about their experiences with 2 saying they had also been ejaculated on as well as a bunch of others talking about the day to day hassles they have.

Now you can go all Notorganic and say fucken blah blah excuses excuses or admit that there is a section of society (probably a sizable chunk) that finds it perfectly acceptable to sexually harass woman both overtly and casually.

I also find it curious that U448662 says that this sort of thing only happens in a low socio economic areas and that there are generally only reprobates out on the street in major CBD's during the day. (Sorry U448662 I usually see eye to eye with you on most things you post here.)

I've worked in both the Sydney and Brisbane CBD's and visited many others over the years. These places are full of business men, as well as others, anytime of the day. (Pity any girl walking past an outdoor restaurant where business blokes have been "lunching" for 2+ hours.)

It is interesting that mostly blokes on here have an opinion about this when really the only people who would know are girls that may or may not be copping it. (Perhaps the salient thing to do would be to have a chat to your sister or girlfriend and ask them for their honest opinions.)

My experience of talking to girls over the years suggests they cop a lot of unwanted attention and advances. Some laugh it off, some take it in their stride and some cop it as if it's part of what to expect if you're a girl.

As I've gotten older I've realised that I've been guilty of probably saying the wrong thing to women many times. I can't do anything about that now except try and tell my kids (and others if they care to listen) to treat women with the respect they deserve.

The only men who are out on the street in the middle part of the day of a major city are either unemployed, homeless, delinquents, street merchants or construction workers.

I wonder the treatment she would receive if she walked into a major retail store, law firm or an office building.

My comment was in relation to men saying they are feminists.

You make some god points though

Things such as men who are primary childcarers being looked down upon, both historically and and in the contemporary, because it is against the macho norm they are supposed to uphold. Discrimination amongst men to others who have less sexual experience, or lack the libido to desire as much as their peers (although that happens among women too, there's less of a confusing double standard, which in itself is an example of sexism). Looking down on football in Australian culture because it is 'wimpy, girley, not manly' and so on I think is a rather fitting example. That a culture is so macho that when men play a sport that doesn't involve crashing into each other it is looked down upon couldn't be a more poignant demonstration. Thankfully things have been changing a lot of late in that regard.
