Quote:Moreton Diehard football fan Kev admits he’s crazy about Caboolture Snakes
February 28, 2015 3:10pm Jacob GramsCaboolture Shire Herald
Kev Alderdice who is Caboolture Snakes biggest fan and even has a tattoo of the club emblem. Photographer: Russell Brown. IS this the region’s most diehard local sports fan?
Kev Alderdice is happy to admit he is crazy about Caboolture Sports FC, right down to the club emblem tattooed into his forearm.
“I accept that and I’m actually proud of that. I don’t care what anyone thinks about me. As far as Caboolture goes, they can do no wrong,” he said.
“What inspires me is the fact these guys are there for the love of the game. They’re not getting a million dollars. They’re there because they want to be there.

“What actually made me passionate originally about football was the North Sydney Bears.
“They got kicked out of the NRL and I turned my back on the NRL the very next day.”
Since then he has been devoted to local sport, firstly in Ipswich before moving north and retiring to Beachmere 18 months ago.
The Snakes welcomed his passion with open arms and in an unofficial capacity he has shared his passion in blogs and social media updates from senior men’s and women’s matches.
This year he has started Radio Venom, conducting interviews with players and coaches in the pre-season in preparation for what he predicts will be a blockbuster year for the club.
“I like to think it helps the club,” Alderdice said.
“They’re a great club and they embraced me with open arms. I don’t think they’d met anyone quite like me.
“I like the A-League and really loved the Asian Cup – I went to every game – but I couldn’t wait for this to start.”
Snakes’ first task of 2015 is the start of the FFA Cup, away to Gympie on Saturday.
“At least we didn’t have to draw ourselves. We’re pretty good,” Alderdice said.
He said while the Snakes had a great squad, he expected Ben Muzyka to lead from the front in the cup tilt and during the Sunshine Coast Football season.
You can guarantee that Kev Alderdice and his wife Lesley will be there for every kick.

Some big results in NNSW an 11-0 and a 15-0. NNSW have set up their draw terribly. Making the NPL teams face 4th and 6th tier teams. Because that was the point of the cup.

Quote:Weston survive penalty shootout, Bridges nets double in FFA Cup By CRAIG KERRY March 1, 2015, 9:50 p.m.
WESTON coach Trevor Morris breathed a sigh of relief as his near full-strength team edged out Newcastle University on penalties in round three of the FFA Cup.
The Bears were the only Northern NSW National Premier League side who came close to elimination at the first hurdle on Saturday as the region’s top teams joined the nationwide knockout in matches at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility at Speers Point.
Newcastle Uni, who play in the third-tier Zone Premier League, led 1-0 via a penalty from captain Corey Nicholas before Weston hit back with goals from Nathan Morris and James Monie.
A header from Uni’s Chris Wett with about 10 minutes remaining made it 2-2 and forced a penalty shootout.
The Bears, who finished second in the inaugural NPL major and minor premierships last season, converted four consecutive penalties.
See your ad here Weston goalkeeper Jack Maddison made one stop and Uni were wide with another to hand the Bears, who included former A-League player Troy Hearfield, a 4-3 win.
Morris was calling the shots in his first competitive game back in charge of the Bears after taking over from the sacked Steve Piggott.
He said Uni’s packed defence was hard to break down and their speed up front was a threat, but his side should have done better.
‘‘The disappointing thing for me was that we let in two goals,’’ Morris said. ‘‘One was a penalty and one was from a cheap turnover.
‘‘They had two quick boys up front and put a good defence in front of us, but we didn’t take our chances.
‘‘That’s not to take anything away from the Uni boys. They deserve a pat on the back.’’
Morris said he was experimenting with players in different positions and had done little work on their attack in pre-season.
Uni coach Chris Moylan said it was a great performance from his side.
‘‘Considering who we were playing, a 2-all draw is as good as a win for us,’’ he said. ‘‘The boys were disappointed not to win, but to come back from 2-1 down was a great effort.’’
The rest of the NPL teams had little trouble in the searing heat coming off the synthetic surfaces.
Former Leeds United striker Michael Bridges scored twice in his competitive debut for Lambton Jaffas in their 8-2 win over Beresfield United Seniors.
Broadmeadow defeated Swansea 6-0, Maitland beat Cooks Hill 8-0, South Cardiff overcame Kahibah 3-0, Charlestown City flogged Plattsburg Maryland 15-0, Edgeworth trounced New Lambton Eagles 11-0, Hamilton Olympic eliminated Newcastle Suns 5-0 and Adamstown got past Kotara South 4-1. Jesmond upset Toronto Awaba 3-1.
The Medowie-Thornton and West Wallsend-Singleton games on Sunday were postponed due to problems with Johnston Park’s surface. http://www.theherald.com.au/story/2915138/weston-survive-penalty-shootout-bridges-nets-double-in-ffa-cup/

Quote:The Alice in wonderland after intriguing Cup draw The Alice Springs draw for preliminary games in Westfield FFA Cup qualifiers was held on Saturday with two bitter Alice Springs rivals facing off in a Red Centre cracker. Darwin hold draw for Westfield FFA Cup qualifiers In a headline writer's dream, Celtic FC will take on Buckleys and will be out for revenge after their championship tilt last season was ended by Buckleys. “The [Westfield FFA Cup] tournament had a different feeling because [Alice Springs] teams are playing for a spot against a Darwin club,” Celtic captain Steve Jones said. “We've always wanted a chance to revive the Alice-Darwin rivalry.” In the other match up, last season’s champions Gillen Scorpions will start favourites against Vikings even though they lost to them in a recent pre-season friendly. “We're all incredibly excited, we've been training for the past six weeks, a whole month earlier than last season,” Scorpions captain Daniel McCormick said. “The kids are training harder because we've never had an opportunity like this before.” Both of these matches will be held in May at Ross Park in Alice Springs, with Celtic taking on Buckleys on the 19th, with Gillen and the Vikings playing the following night. Both matches will kick off at 7pm. With Northern Territory being given a direct slot into the round of 32 this year, qualifiers in Darwin and Alice Springs will take on great significance in coming months. The respective winners from Darwin and Alice Springs will play each other in a one-off clash in June. For the winner, the coveted single Territory spot in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32, which starts in late July. After Darwin held their draw last week, it was Alice Springs’ turn over the weekend with some interesting match-ups. Quote:Hawkesbury City FC gearing up for FFA Cup By ANDREW PARKINSON March 3, 2015, 2:28 p.m.

See your ad here FOOTBALL
IT HAS been a big couple of weeks for Hawkesbury City boss Dean Bertenshaw.
The first grade coach, who has returned to the club in 2015, saw the Hawks host NPL 1 champions Blacktown City in a pre-season friendly late last month followed by the draw for the preliminary rounds of the FFA Cup.
Hawkesbury City will host Gladesville Hornsby Football Association club West Ryde Rovers in round three in mid-March and a win would set up an exciting fourth round clash with NPL 2 promotion hopefuls St George.
Bertenshaw said the club would be totally committed to the FFA Cup.
“We’re taking it 100 per cent seriously,” he said.
“You love to be in the cup and it would be really good for the area if we could progress.
“We don’t know much about the opposition but we’ll be putting our best team on the park as well as giving some of our younger players a chance to step up.”
Bertenshaw returned to the Hawks after helping guide Blacktown City to the NPL 1 title last season.
See your ad here He said he was pleased with what he saw from his players in their 3-0 defeat to his former team.
“It was difficult for us,” he said.
“That was our first game which made it very tough whereas the Blacktown boys, other than being a very good side anyway, they’ve been back since November.
“They were far more advanced than us but we expected that.
“We knew as well that we’re seven weeks out from our first game of the season so we rotated a lot of players which was good.”
Bertenshaw said hosting a club of Blacktown’s pedigree was a sign of Hawkesbury’s development.
“It was a really good night actually,” he said.
“The grand stand and the hills were full. There were people everywhere.
“To have Blacktown’s first grade team come out and play us that would never have happened before so it was pretty special.”
The Hawks squad for the new campaign is all but finalised and includes new signings Ben Gough and Jason Browne.
“We’re pretty much done, we’ve only bought two new players so we’ve got a very settled squad,” Bertenshaw said.
“Ben is a three-time Australian schoolboy and with Jason they’re both ex-high level players from the Penrith area.”
Hawkesbury City starts their Football NSW State League 1 campaign on March 28 when they host Western NSW Mariners. http://www.hawkesburygazette.com.au/story/2919304/hawks-boss-ready-for-ffa-cup/

Quote:Speers Point pitches spark heated debate By CRAIG KERRY March 3, 2015, 9:30 p.m.
See your ad here STICKY UNDERFOOT: Maitland’s Harry Maguire playing against Cooks Hill in the FFA Cup at Speers Point on Saturday. Picture: Brock Perks STICKY UNDERFOOT: Maitland’s Harry Maguire playing against Cooks Hill in the FFA Cup at Speers Point on Saturday. Picture: Brock Perks NORTHERN NSW Football will re-evaluate its policy on playing matches in hot conditions at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility after concerns from coaches about extreme heat coming off the new synthetic pitches.
National Premier League teams played on the artificial surfaces in round three of the FFA Cup on Saturday.
For many players from the region’s top competition, it was the first time they had experienced the pitches, which were laid in December as part of the new $11.3million centre.
NNSWF implemented a FIFA-standard heat policy, which called for games to stop if temperatures reached 33degrees or a 30-degree wet-bulb reading was registered.
The maximum temperature on Saturday at Speers Point was 28.7, but a game at the centre was abandoned on Sunday due to the heat.
Charlestown coach Shane Pryce said some of his players had come away with blisters on their feet because of the heat coming off the surface.
‘‘It’s made for winter, and as a wet-weather ground or for catch-up games at night, it will be wonderful, but it’s not made for summer,’’ Pryce said.
Adamstown Rosebud coach Graham Law said ‘‘my players did not enjoy it’’.
See your ad here ‘‘I grew up playing on synthetic surfaces in Europe, but they are not made for this heat,’’ Law said.
Lambton Jaffas coach David Tanchevski said his players had suffered blisters during a trial game on the surface a week earlier, but they had used Vaseline on Saturday to prevent a repeat.
Weston coach Trevor Morris said his side had pulled up well, but ‘‘the boys said it felt like their feet were melting through their shoes’’.
Hamilton coach Michael Bolch, Edgeworth’s Damian Zane and South Cardiff boss Greg Asquith said their players had no problems with the surface and came through the games well. Maitland’s Chris Turner said his players had told him ‘‘it felt sticky underfoot’’, but he ‘‘wouldn’t mind taking the team there again’’.
Broadmeadow coach Robert Virgili, who lost midfielder Alex Kantarovski for the season with a knee injury suffered on the surface on Saturday, said ‘‘the heat coming off the surface was unbelievable and the feedback from players was that it was a concern’’.
Law and Virgili have experience with watered synthetic turf overseas and were among coaches who believed a wet surface could help cool the ground and create better ‘‘give’’ underfoot.
But NNSWF chief executive David Eland said: ‘‘The surface is not designed at all to be watered. It is not like hockey.
‘‘This is state-of-the-art technology and the drainage is so good that watering it is a waste of time.
‘‘The water will go straight through the drainage cells and leave the surface.’’
Eland said rain on the pitch created extra humidity and even more heat.
He said he was ‘‘absolutely comfortable with having pre-season games’’ on the surface, but NNSWF would consider feedback from clubs and look at potentially delaying early FFA Cup fixtures until later in March, starting fixtures earlier in the day, having breaks in the middle of the day, having more games under lights and decentralising matches.
The FFA Cup qualifying series for Northern NSW will be at Speers Point in June.
Eland said ‘‘heat coming out of the surface is the only disadvantage that we have discovered’’ and the pitches had been brilliant despite been ‘‘absolutely thrashed’’ since being laid.
He said NNSWF had invested in underlay rubber which was purported to be 20per cent cooler, but there was no escaping the fact that the surface, filled with rubber and sand, would be hot in summer. http://www.theherald.com.au/story/2920442/speers-point-pitches-spark-heated-debate/?cs=306

Monday, 2 March 2015 - John Greco @Grecs7 Penalty-shootouts, big scores and a brace by ex-Leeds United and Newcastle Jet Michael Bridges highlighted another dramatic round of Westfield FFA Cup preliminary round matches around the country over the weekend. With NPL teams joining the action in Northern NSW, Bridges capped his competitive debut for Lambton Jaffas with two goals as they crushed Beresfield United 8-2 in Lake Macquarie on Saturday. Broadmeadow Magic (6-0) and South Cardiff (3-0) – two sides who were part of last season’s Westfield FFA Cup – had little trouble getting through over Swansea and Kahibah respectively. Weston Workers Bears, which included former Hyundai A-League flyer Troy Hearfield, had goal-keeper Jack Maddison to thank for avoiding an embarrassing defeat. Forced to penalties after a 2-2 draw with Newcastle Uni, Maddison made a crucial save during the shootout as the Bears progressed 4-3 after spot-kicks. There were a few big scores in Northern NSW with Charlestown City smashing Plattsburg Maryland 15-0, Maitland trounced Cooks Hill 8-0 and Edgeworth were 11-0 winners over New Lambton Eagles 11-0. Victoria had another stack of matches with some impressive performances across the state. Maribyrnong Greens were probably the most impressive as they disposed of Parkmore 9-0, while Heatherton United also almost got double figures as they win 9-1 against Keon Park. It was a goal-fest at Myers Reserve as Geelong Rangers beat RMIT FC 8-3, Point Cook won a nine-goal thriller against Mill Park 6-3 and it took penalties for Old Scotch SC to edge out Harrisfield Hurricanes. There was a couple of games in Queensland as well with Noosa Lions the most impressive, cruising to an 11-1 victory over Beerwah Glasshouse Unted, while Kawana beat Coolum 5-0.
