Is anyone familiar with the specifics and whether there really is a case?

It sounds like Iran kept quiet until after the match to use as a "get out of jail free" card just in case they lost.

Not much apparently he played a few games in Iran last season, but the president of that club came out and said he did not fail any drug tests.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

x2. This Stinks.

Also, If ASADA are the local agency doing the tests, it might take 2 years to get an outcome.

They are arguing that he was already banned, not that he failed a test in Australia.

As a constituent body, the AFC accepted the team list from Iraq, so logic should say there is nothing here. Up to the AFC to have rejected the player before the tournament if he was banned.

However, stranger things have happened.

I think you'll find the onus is always on the club, or in this case national team, to make sure they don't field ineligible players.

yes didn't the same thing happen (Fielding an ineligible player) by the polish side against Celtic, the guy came on for 2mins when his side was already through.. because of that UEFA awarded celtic a win and qualification.

Latest on the Iran/Iraq situation: a decision from FIFA is expected this afternoon, Aus time. The entire Iranian side is still in Australia.

The AFC's disciplinary committee will meet soon, Sydney time, to make a judgement on the Iran/Iraq case. Expect an answer this afternoon.

Good news. Would've been a farce had Iran gone through. The AFC should have dealt with this before the game - it's shit form from the Iranians because it sounds like they were the only ones who knew of the actual ban and they didn't report it, they waited to use it in case they lost.

Iraq v Iran doping scandal 2015 AFC Asian Cup

According to the vice-head of the Iranian anti- doping agency, Dr. Ramin Tabatabaei, Iraq player Alaa Abdul-Zahra failed drug testing in Iran when he was in Teraktor and as a consequence should have been deemed ineligible for the Iraq versus Iran quarter final.

The 23 year old Iraqi midfielder Alaa Abdul-Zahra was playing in Iran with Tractor Sazi Club in 2014 when he tested positive for a prohibited drug Methylhexanamine, an energy boosting drug that has been banned by many sport authorities and governmental agencies.

The Iraqi player underwent both an A and B test as stipulated by FIFA and both tests came back with a positive reading. By the time the second test came back Abdul-Zahra was playing for Al-Shorta, so the results were passed to FIFA’s medical group to be pursued through the Iraqi Football Federation.

As a result of these tests, the Iraqi midfielder should have received a suspension of at least 6 months up to 2 years consequently ruling him out for the 2015 AFC Asian cup.

A letter was apparently sent to FIFA prior to the Iran-Iraq match, but Zahra played in the quarterfinal anyway.

Under strict FIFA guidelines the national football association of each country is responsible for ensuring that all their players are eligible and in this instance Iraq could lose all competition points and be withdrawn from the semi-final stage of the competition.

All the documentation has been shared with AFC’s medical group and they will be asking the Iraqi Football Federation about this within the next 48 hours.

Following the lawsuit filed against the Iraq team, Iranian side has delayed its exit from Australia, due to an AFC request, awaiting a response from the world governing body, which is expected today.

If approved, Iran would be announced as the winner of the game 3-0 and progress to the next round against South Korea instead of Iraq.

Quote:
Sydney: A top Iranian official on Sunday called for a life ban for Australian referee Ben Williams after a bungling display in their tempestuous Asian Cup quarter-final loss to Iraq.

Delegation chief Houshang Moghaddas said Iran would lodge a formal complaint against Williams following the dismissal of their protest that had Iraq fielded an ineligible player.

"We will complain 100 percent, yes. With documents, with DVDs. This referee must be suspended for life," Moghaddas told AFP in Sydney.

"Our team was going to be the champions here. We worked on this team for four years. We brought a very good and ready team. They spoiled it. The referee spoiled it."

Ben Williams is shit but this is the 2nd major tournament Iran has lost a match and then submitted a complaint against the referee (v Argentina)

Iran simply can't lose without blaming others
