“The Art Gallery of NSW’s long-planned Sydney Modern expansion is without a builder after Lendlease pulled out of the running to construct the $344 million project.

Six years after it was announced, and eight months after construction was due to commence, the ABC can reveal the project is now effectively in limbo, with the NSW government again searching for a company to build it.

The revelation comes less than a week after the ABC revealed Lendlease backed out of building the Sydney Football Stadium at Moore Park, despite carrying out the project’s demolition phase.”

“The Australian understands that one offer from Lendlease to cut costs was to make the stadium roughly the same standard as the Bankwest stadium at Parramatta, but the government and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust are after a higher-standard stadium.“If any contractor doesn’t provide what the government’s asked for, we’ll look elsewhere and that’s what’s happened in this circumstance,” Ms Berejiklian said. “I’m absolutely confident; the timeline’s there for us to meet, the budget’s there for us to meet, there are other interested parties and I look forward to issuing a contract.“We want to make sure it’s world-class … within the budget and we look forward to having a contractor on board to meet those requirements.”

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics/cost-and-delays-behind-stadium-build-dropout/news-story/4a028d26c43c376c5f58da0f5940b7ec

I've said this many times on this forum. I am sick to death of dick measuring contests between governments when it comes to stadiums. I'm sure Allianz could have been nicely refurbished at half the cost. They should be catering for their needs and they just don't need a 45,000 capacity stadium at Moore Park. And even on the rare occasions its at capacity, is the light rail line gonna be able to handle the traffic? i highly doubt it.

If it were me, I would have sold both ANZ and Allianz and used to proceeds to build one stadium at a central location next to a train line.

Has this got anything to do with the Liberals?
Demolition contract was separate from construction.  After demolition,  construction contractor tried to change contract.  Liberals said go away.  I'm pretty sure that any government would do that

Why would you demolish something that has questions over the budget of rebuilding it lol.

I am hoping that this delay in finding a builder will cause a redesign in the stadium. If they come out with a smaller stadium at 35K it will be absolute perfect. This will surely come under budget which is the major sticking point.

The problem is that the Sydney SCG trust is the main political party of NSW. Apparently nothing in NSW gets done without the approval of Alan Jones and his cronies. The stadium is getting built for that reason alone and I am hopeful it gets reduced in size from its original size of 45-50k. Won't be easy because this sad bunch needs to stay relevant and their toy has to be the biggest, shiniest, most expensive one out  there. Hopefully Gladys gets her balls out and gives them a nice tea bagging. Sorry about that last image.

Fom my perspective the problems with the old stadium beyond, any "safety reasons" that were trotted out, as an excuse to demolish the old stadium were that the large 'Members area' was for members of the SCG Trust. As the stadium was built in mind for members of the SCG who wanted to watch principally Rugby Union and Rugby League, and could afford the high membership fees. Football fans were not (and I would argue still not), a consideration for the SCG Trust.  The Trust members area covered all of the upper levels of the Western side, which is shaded from the sun. This left your legitamate football spectator with limited seating, much of which is on the Eastern side of the stadium where they would be looking into the afternoon/evening sun. I am not aware that the new stadium would address either of these issues (regardless if it gets built, or not). It is a pity that Sydney FC have not lobbied the Government to help build their own  stadium at Moore Park (I would have thought 25000 seating for a football only stadium would be sufficient).

It's hard to understand why the government wouldn't use prime real estate to build a stadium specifically for a foreign-owned club.

It's perplexing.

or better still, upgrade Kogarah to 25,000 with extra seating and protection from the sun and the elements. Much like MacArthur’s plan for Campbelltown.

Granted. There would need to be a change of the ownership at Sydney FC to address issues raised. A bit of fluff, really, lol.

Who'da thought a Liberal Party backed plan would blow up in a money-driven fiasco?

It will be over-budget and past deadline. All to watch Easts play the Titans in front of 12k people with Vossy having an aneurysm in the commentary box.

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

With stadium plan in flux, Labor proposes a smaller Moore Park venue

“The state government should consider a smaller stadium at Moore Park if it is unable to build its desired 45,000-seat venue within its budget, the opposition says. Sports Minister John Sidoti revealed last month that contractor Lendlease had not met "the government’s expectations" for its offer to build a stadium to replace the demolished Allianz Stadium at Moore Park. Although the government said before the March election that it had signed one contract with Lendlease to demolish the old stadium and build a new one in its place, it now says the contract was always split in two. The contract allows the government to select another builder. The remains of Allianz Stadium in Moore Park The remains of Allianz Stadium in Moore Park Brook Mitchell Labor’s sports spokeswoman, Lynda Volz, said Premier Gladys Berejiklian should be open to the idea of building a smaller stadium on the site, given the former Allianz Stadium so rarely sold out its 45,000-seat capacity. "She needs to start considering whether it is better to have a 30,000-seat stadium rather than a 45,000-seat stadium," Ms Voltz said. The size of a potential new stadium at Moore Park has been a consistent issue of contention in the long-running saga of the state government’s stadium policy. When former premier Mike Baird announced in September 2015 an intention to build a new rectangular stadium at Moore Park, he said it would have between 50,000 and 55,000 seats. Mr Baird subsequently reneged on the idea of a new Moore Park stadium – preferring to focus investment on improving ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park. But under former sports minister Stuart Ayres, the policy changed again under Ms Berejiklian as Premier – and the government committed to a 40,000- to 45,000-seat stadium at Moore Park for $729 million. Other ideas were floated during the development of this policy. For instance, the NRL and Football Federation Australia at one stage suggested the state government build a more modest 35,000-seat stadium at Moore Park. "We believe the best outcome for sport and taxpayers would be for the current Allianz Stadium to be knocked down and a new 35,000-seat, purpose-built rectangular stadium built in its place, similar to the new $360 million Western Sydney Stadium at Parramatta," NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg wrote to Ms Berejiklian in September 2017. However, the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust, as well as the Australian Rugby Union, were fierce opponents of a smaller stadium at Moore Park. The state government has built a 30,000-seat stadium at Parramatta, Bankwest Stadium, for less than its budgeted $360 million. Asked whether the government would consider building a smaller stadium at Moore Park, Mr Sidoti said through a spokesman: "The NSW government is tendering proposals from construction firms to build the Sydney Football Stadium, on time and on budget for $729 million." One of the construction firms handpicked by the NSW government to bid to rebuild the venue, AW Edwards, last week said it would not be interested in completing the project.”

However, the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust, as well as the Australian Rugby Union, were fierce opponents of a smaller stadium at Moore Park.

Finally someone in the media says it out loud. The only reason that this stadium is going over 35k is because the suits at Rugby Australia have given up on the west and want to move all their test matches east.

We are going to miss out on a proper rebuild of Homebush and the SFS will continue to be too big with no curtains for normal games because Union fans are too stubborn to go further west than Leichardt and the SCG trust are salivating at the idea of hosting games against the All Blacks.

Don't forget it's not double for 10k of seats its the additional costs of International Standard Corporate facilities that add the costs.

”The NSW Government have shortlisted Multiplex and John Holland for the construction of the new Sydney Football Stadium following a blowout with Lendlease last month.

Lendlease was axed for the reconstruction of the stadium shortly after The Australian revealed that Lendlease was chasing tens of millions of dollars more to finish the project when it told the government it was unable to lower the cost.

However Lendlease will continue to oversee stage one demolition work at Allianz Stadium, which is on track for completion by the end of the year.

Minister for Sport John Sidoti said that the delivery of the new Sydney Football Stadium remains on time and on budget.

Both organisations have been invited to participate in a competitive tender process to deliver stage two of the project.

John Sidoti said, “The winning bidder will be announced later this year, following the receipt of stage two planning approval and completion of the tender evaluation.”

“We know that if we want to continue attracting global events we need our stadiums to be the best in the world but the NSW public expects us to negotiate the best price."

“The NSW Government’s plan delivers the experience fans deserve. The refurbished Stadium Australia will move 46,000 seats up to 25 metres closer to the action to create more atmosphere,” Mr Sidoti said.”

It still annoys me that they only intend to shift the bottom tier and its 46,000 seats in and leave the rest of the seating where it is.

I actually thought the view from the upper stands was ok, a long way away from the action but you could see everything fine. the times I have been in the lower tier, it is far away AND the rake is so shallow it is really hard to see anything but what is right in front of you. Done right, closer with steeper rake and it could be alright.

I remember the last time I sat in "active" at a roos game and didn't even realise Oman had scored because the AFC advertising boards were in the way.

And that was like 25 rows back!

Don't go to the MCG then.  The bottom tier there is flatter than at ANZ and the infield is 146m wide which is about 50m wider than ANZ with the bottom tier in.

The problem with the other tiers not being moved in as was originally planned is that every seat in them is 15 to 18m further away than they need to be and the last 8 or so rows on the sides are further away than FIF recommends.

I watched the Liverpool game at the MCG at the top tier and I thought the viewing experience from the top deck of ANZ was much better, I wouldn't even bother trying to watch football from the lower tiers at the MCG.

I remember the last time I sat in "active" at a roos game and didn't even realise Oman had scored because the AFC advertising boards were in the way.

And that was like 25 rows back!

Yeah viewing at the SFS from the away bays was very grim. I think it's the major reason people got so on board with Hindmarsh away instead.
