Joey Banza (2009), Ethan Dyer (2009) and Aaron Cartwright (2008) have been selected for NZ's U16 team. Aaron Cartwright featuring in the last Joey's camp in April. Seems that if Banza or Dyer get capped for the OFC tournament they'll be ineligible to switch for the remainder of the U17 cycle, meaning no features next year for the Asian or World Cup. Joey Banza is a very talented attacker out of the WSW academy, playing along with Akol Akon who is another player who should've been selected along with Joey in one of these past camps. Losing him would be a shame.

Do u think our u16 selections were wrong to miss those players or is competition for spots getting very strong

At least select them for one of the camps. Especially, with the consequence of them being nation-tied for the cycle. They seem to be reluctant to choose 2009 born players for being too young but by next year a lot of them we'll be leading the charge anyways. Akol Akon specifically is one of the star potential wingers from this group along with Amlani Tatu.

It makes me wonder if the talent ID, expense and/or development pathways for African kids is better in Adelaide. There's no reason other capitals shouldn't have similar talent coming through.

Adelaide united give kids minutes at a younger age than other clubs

They also give them npl minutes at a younger age. So that is probably part of the reason why they do better!

A lot of African talent coming through, especially in NSW. Akol Akon and Joey Banza proof of that. Easier transition into senior football in Adelaide. Adelaide also has a culture brewing that is inspiring younger African-Australian talents into a clear pathway and proof that it can be done.

I like to think Adelaide United are one of the better clubs giving opportunities to young players which might be a factor.

It's up to other clubs to improve on that front.

Amazing goal to start the 2nd half. Dribble straight through the 2 rows of 4 and scores a banger

Mcnicol with a goal from 25 out

5 zip

Mcnicol nearly scores again as a 1 2 throne zone 14 ends in a parried shot

For all the plaudits for tatu i think our midfield has been brilliant, both in creating chances against a deep block and in stopping counter attacks

Mcnicol with a killer ball from zone 14 and our strike scores from a tight angle

As i type our 8 and 10 have a cute 1 2 but the srirker misses a 1v1 with the keeper

We miss 2 more 1v1s with the keepee, a real worry this tournament i think we have missed 10 1v1s with the keeper

Mcnicol then with a class first touch, body feint the scores
9 nil

Ive watched quite a bit of mcnicol over the last 12 months. Controversial call but he might be the best australian u15 i have ever seen including de silva and irannkunda

De silva of course sadly peaked at 19 haha so being good at this age doesnt necesarily mean much

Yeah MacNicol is very impressive. Thought he DOMINATED against Switzerland u16 in April. Very impressive showing from the boys especially considering this is without many players that will make the final Asian Cup 2025 squad. So much depth as well, could probably field three lineups that could compete.

There was an article by libero consulting about research on the effect of the nyl during the nsl era. They had a full home and away season unlike the short seasons they had in the a league era. With marconi and sydney united and a few others also having b teams in the state leagues, as well as much more international football, there was a real clear pathway to accelerate youth to be starters for the senior side before they turned 18

We need that back. We are starting to have these youth tournaments, we have teams in the npl, just need a decent length nyl to supplement it as the youth today look really skilled

Yes for all its criticisms, the NYL did provide a clear pathway to first team pro football. Particularly for the Sydney based NSL teams, Marconi, Sydney United etc, they played in the same youth league as other non-NSL teams (i.e. Blacktown Demons, Bonnyrigg, APIA Leichhardt) up to age 17/18, but the NSL teams had the benefit of the NYL once their players graduated out of the state youth leagues - no such clear pathway exists now. A-League academy teams play in the same NPL comps as the non-A League teams, but the pathway to senior A League football is a lot less clearer then when we had the NYL.

The problem with the NYL it was costly which is why the APL haven't brought it back yet I hope they do bring it back in some way in the future because the more football the better will be for the players of course but with a-league clubs fielding NPL teams playing against a stronger level against men it makes more sense to go with that direction for the time being given the financial troubles the league has at the present time.

An ideal world you get the best of the worlds, but im also curious how will the pathways will look like once the NSD commences so maybe things might change in the future anyway.
