According to Twitter the deal was supposed to be done today but will now be done next week.
Euro based international striker, Phoenix are spending the sale fee for Burns plus his wage so should be a marquee.
Hope he goes well.

Let's hope Phoenix can surprise the league and actually bring in a decent marquee.

Krusen wrote:Let's hope Phoenix can surprise the league and actually bring in a decent marquee. There is no way we are after a big money marquee. We aren't Sydney or Melbourne. Until FFA confirm our license renewal, we will struggle to sign anyone, let alone someone of marquee status. We are currently at a severe disadvantage because of FFA's ineptitude. Obviously no one in the Australian media gives a toss, though, because they're mostly mouth pieces for the FFA anyway. Edited by A.Haak: 7/8/2015 10:03:08 PM

I'm not sure why this is so hard to understand. Perth Glory are a shambles , Brisbane can't pay their players, Newcastle have had to be saved by the FFA - even the current Australian clubs can't get their shit together. If there was a suitable bid from anywhere don't you think the FFA would've thought about it already? There are no other viable teams at this stage. Shit, we're one of the only clubs providing any sort of good publicity. Edited by A.Haak: 8/8/2015 10:04:38 PM

If you want to start a Phoenix out rumor thread then go ahead but this is a Phoenix signing thread so piss off. How many clubs can the FFA afford to own anyway? Phoenix are independent, well run, and sustainable.

Marquee? Meh! A goal-scoring Bonevacia-type player would be fantastic, thanks.

Looking forward to this, although I don't rate their chances this year.

"I'm close to agreeing something with somebody, hopefully that can be sorted out in the next week."- Barton added.
Joey Barton is training with Watford in the hope of earning a move to the newly-promoted Premier League club.
However, he will have to lower his wage demands considerably if he is secure a switch to Watford.
Manager Quique Sanchez Flores is interested in adding the experienced Barton to his squad, although the club are only prepared to offer a maximum salary of £40,000-a-week.
BIG $$$

BIG $$$ £40,000 pounds a week is WAY above any thing an A-league club could afford to have as marquee. I think Del Pierro was on $3.5 million a year which is about $67,000 AUD which is about 32,000 British pounds.

Ernie has said two things:
The first is that he has the money that Burns was sold for as well as his wage to spend on the position. Seeing as Burns was paid out side of the cap (as an accounting marquee) we know that its likely to be a marquee player.
The second thing that Ernie has said is that every player they've talked to has wanted a million bucks. So its going to be less than that. I read somewhere once that the average marquee in the A-league is on less than 800k.
The Phoenix are not a high spending club so don't expect a big name.
It's not going to be Joey Barton because he costs too much, doesn't comply with the clubs culture (no dickheads policy), and we have one of the best midfields in the A-League, we need strikers.

Joey Barton as a striker would be interesting though!
Amazing how some people find that 1+1=24.4874324

I think I recall hearing that they had been talking to James McFadden, but that was nearly 2 months ago.

A striker is just so, so necessary for them. Maybe a younger CB to put some pressure on Dura and Sigmund wouldn't hurt either. Despite being the longest standing pair in the comp, you'd have to say they're not getting any younger, and I thought Sigmund looked quite poor late last season.

Loosing Boxall in the offseason was a real loss for us, and strangely - despite having only two aging CB's on our books - we have been playing with a back three over the pre-season. Last season I thought Sigmund looked the better of the two, he's been transformed under Ernie, who would have thought a few years ago that he could be a ball playing centre back with a pretty good discipline record.
