We hear this phrase bandied about a fair bit.
So I am interested as to how people define it.
What determines assimilation versus segregation?
etc, etc

I know people who used to be part of my parents' community back in Iraq who have lived here for years and have made no effort to learn English. They impose their views onto the others who have assimilated and they actually want to go back to their home country now that they have made more money. They live with their ethnic group and believe they are superior to others.

So while my parents adopted the culture, made new connections and became proud citizens, these primitive apes decided to stay segregated from others and attempted to bring their relatives down with them, while leeching off the country's generosity.

Are they Australian citizens?
Any suggestions for how better to assimilate people into Australia?
Do people need to 'assimilate'?

I think the word 'assimilate' isn't a good one. I think it's a good thing that migrant communities are able to retain their culture, but they should also engage with the new society they live in.

You show clear lack of respect by responding to someone who went to the effort of posting their well thought out personal experience by answering with a new bunch of questions. ](*,)

Its interesting that "multiculturalism" is the heavily promoted slogan yet "Assimilation" is the goal.

A bit of a paradox.

Yet you love posting pictures of orthodox Jews in a negative context, shouldn't their lack of assimilation be cause for celebration for you?

And that one football post was only five words, completely devoid of passion, knowledge or any kind of awareness. Strange that the one aspect of posters on here that most identifies them is their team affiliation yet he has given no sign of that, just political bullshit. Keep calling him out on it.

'Assimilate' is one of those terms that will eventually, if not already, be tossed into the "racist, divisive language" basket with other words like Australianise and Team Australia. The idea that people who comes here through either invitation or humanitarian channels ought to make an effort to learn the language, understand the values and try to fit into mainstream culture is so horrific to some that it is considered just another form of cultural genocide and Western Imperialism. Hence they are encouraged to retain their minority status, loath western values and reject the idea of joining the broader society, instead we are expected to adapt to their values and customs and of course this creates an "us v them" mentality which manifests in racist outbursts like the Cronulla Riots, Australian Defence Leauge and on the other side religious extremists.

IMO people who come here must accept and embrace Australian values or be refused entry, even if they are a misfortunate poor refugee. But because the left have watered down and constantly put down out own values, and replaced it with the core value or ingratiating and acquiescing to minorities, we are seeing increased tension between multicultural Australia (specifically Islam ) and broader Australia, because they each treat others values and culture as inferior.

Lol, the Australian Defence League. I was Ralph Cerminara's commander at one point and in 20 years in the army I never saw a soldier who was beaten up so often, so easily, by so many and for so many different reasons. That dickhead could walk into a room with 100 people and within 5 minutes 99 of them would have to be restrained from attacking him and each would have a different reason.

His last year in the army he had to be supervised constantly for his own protection and then he gets busted on ANZMI.net for pretending he was in Afghanistan, Iraq and Timor. We couldn't even let him out of the office.

Can't believe I'm going to say this but I agree with SocaWho.

But anyway this post of Crusader sounded interesting so I google up Mr Cerminara and lo and behold there you go.

He does seem a bit retarded. I'm surprised he actually got in the army. But then again Jaquie Lambie is a national Senator so anything is possible.

I don't know if they are citizens or not. We hardly ever see these people because we don't want to.

I think the only thing we can do is be as open as we can, and hopefully they will embrace society. There will always be fuckers like them who choose not to appreciate the country that has improved (and in some cases saved) their lives.

I think people should be able to keep their culture but accept our culture too. My parents still cook food they ate back home and they still go to traditional celebrations with Assyrian/Arabic music etc. What they have dropped was their conservative values which do not match with our Australian ones (for instance anti-homosexuality, arranged marriages, sexist views).

Just read the first post, no others so no apology for any similar post before this
1. English took over
2. Greeks came and were called wogs
3. Italians and other ethics came and were also called wogs
4. Croatians came, called something , not sure what cause skin was same colour
5. Asians came, couldn't drive , got called gooks, boat people, slopes etc.
6. People with Islamic culture came, got called rag heads among other things
Now
1. English still here
2, 3 & 4, the term wog is now a term of endearment and people of these race fit in and have assimilated well and a great deal of people we talk and work with everyday are descendants, who knew?
5. Asians are here in force, most peaceful people and great food and now talk shit with Aussies as if there is no difference, never hear them referred to in a derogatory way anymore, happy they are here truth be told.
6, well those guys came here to escape violence, control and persecution, given a new life, now they want their own religious law introduced, they see us a dirty dogs, they are misogynists, violent by nature , they want us to live by their man made law based on the teachings of a man who lived thousands of years ago who they call a prophet of their man made god. The same shit they came to escape they want for us. Its a culture fit. They could easily just keep it to themselves but they don't.
I don't think its racist to notice this, because I'm happy with most people, I just think if you don't like the way we live in the country that saved you or you chose to live in, fuck off.

I think we ought to start out by not putting our country, it's culture and values down. We need to start by having a positive attitude towards being Australian, not one that mired in shame, guilt and self loathing because of issues like refugees and Aboriginals. How can we expect others to respect us and want to assimilate when we are so down on ourselves and disparaging about our history? Perhaps some think by being anti Australian and lowering ourselves it will appease minoriteis and this will cultivate a more cohesive society, but all it really does is breed resentment and foster prejudices towards the mainstream. Do you really think Aborignals would be so resentful towards Australia if we weren't out there everyday reminding them how terrible we are because we took their land and stole their babies?

We really need to actively promote Australian values and encourage folks to join Team Australian rather than reacting with confected outrage and self loathing when someone suggests this. People won't subscribe to Australian values when Australians themselves perceive them to be racist.

If there are so many of these "muslims" who want to impose their value system on us, where are the grass roots political parties or even a spokesperson willing to speak out about it? Perhaps they exist but I would expect the Bolt's of this world to make a big deal about them.

But how do we go about doing it?
And what are Australian values?
I think a big factor is religion and also the obvious language barrier - birds of a feather will flock together
And it's a little hard to 'train' ingrained adults

I think we ought to start out by not putting our country, it's culture and values down. I'd say part of the answer is in the food labelling. Much of the food you buy on the shelves is Halal Certified.
I'd also say the formation of so called ghettos seen in the UK , France and Sweden would add to the fear that non-muslims have about muslim immigration. Thats not to say all muslim people are bad...but it does give ammunition for the likes of Bolt to build Anti Muslim sentiment.

Where are your family from, I have been working around Baqofeh lately.

I'm unaware of your experiences Stif, and I'm no apologist but every muslim I've met here has been lovely, practices their religion in peace. I'm sorry for the women that have been indoctrinated to cover themselves but by and large I think muslims here have assimilated well. And I'm not too worried about them wanting sharia law, call me when they become 5% of the population.

Of course there's exceptions like the kids that went to fight with ISIS or the Lindt coffee shop hostage crisis, and I'm not going to say their exceptions are less frequent than other groups, it's clear they are. But I think they've done well here and in other multicultural countries.

From what i've seen in Europe, not so much. Their native people don't want to be mixed in with them so they are left to be apart of a muslim enclaves within a city where they have little interactions with others, don't involve the police and police themselves

Are you suggesting that the natives change their ways / attitudes in order to blend in with the muslims?
It should be the other way around. Other migrants / immigrants i.e. Greeks , Italians , Chinese, Croats, etc have had to make the extra effort to try and make a good reputations for themselves in society.

Hizb ut-Tahrir are active throughout Australia, you need to monitor more Arabic media You think all those ALP branches ethnically stack themselves?

That little shithead who murdered Curtis Cheng came from a Hizb ut-Tahrir lecture before slaughtering an unarmed accountant. You probably didn't hear about it because the ABC,the Grauniad and Billy Shorten were only concerned for the poor exploited young boy who chanted religious slogans while committing a politically motivated crime. Weasel words like that is why the message you heard had no relation to reality.

Hizb ut-Tahrir were much clearer in their message, which is why a good family man is dead.
