Because when it happened, perhaps assuming it's a one off, she went to Richie Richardson (who was the coach) about it. Now that it's clear that he didn't learn anything from it she told someone in the media.

Why does anyone wait before taking anything embarrassing to the media. Let's say it is true, makes sense for the woman to not want to say anything out of embarrassment but decide to speak up when she knows she'll have decent support in the media and what not.

Because cartoons are a form of social and political commentary. So it is not unreasonable to expect that a cartoonist has an appreciation of social and political culture.
