I'll break down my point of view for you nice and simply:
1) Not everyone who tries drugs becomes an addict, but everyone who is an addict once upon a time tried their drug(s) of choice
2) Legalisation and prescription of drugs is going to increase the amount of people trying them, which means there's more exposure to people who are predisposed to addiction
3) Those who would have access to drugs at the moment will still have access to them, but now people who otherwise wouldn't have now have the opportunity to try them
4) I agree with decriminalisation of drugs, and better education surrounding them (as opposed to the scare tactic messages of "don't do drugs" )
5) Drugs like cocaine and heroin are dangerous and harmful substances, and regular use of them (addict or not) can do serious, lasting damage to the brain
6) My point wasn't that alcohol should become illegal, my point was that even though it's legal and not seen as taboo, there are still huge problems with it

I believe your opinion is the popular opinion. I don't agree with all of your points but most of them are pretty straight forward.

I have found very few people that agree with my point of view pretty much because of all the points you have made but I find that most people take the position that we just need to be tougher of drug users which is simply ignoring the root of the problem.

I think I don't disagree with you that much, and you're right about the benefits that you've pointed out. I misinterpreted it at first and didn't properly understand what you meant. I've learnt a bit about the effects of drugs on the brain and drug addiction/substance abuse from studying psychology, so that's where most of my opinion on this kind of thing comes from.

This seems to me to be a horribly popular opinion.

I constantly hear people reeking of tall poppy syndrome whinging about about how much money elite sport (swimming in particular) gets.

I reckon swimming is the healthiest sport there is, our strongest sport and deserving of all the funding it gets (plus more). Elite sport doesn't get that much funding in Australia, especially compared to in Britain. We need to keep funding sport (at elite and grassroots level).

The thought of another Montréal Olympics is truly horrific.
