Democracy is like the olympics.
Invented by Greeks but other countries do it better.

I havent used the muter, i prefer the logout button when things get too stupid on web forums.  Serious debate is almost impossible because nobody is accountable for their words. In these cases the mute button is very good idea as it saves other readers from the stupidity.

I was in Athens during 2004. I was even at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Greece did a very good job and it was better than Sydney in my opinion.

Sure, the mute button might come in handy for those who at the bottom of the spectrum. difficult to fathom what could be classified as stupid at this point if you put yourself in their shoes. So having understood this now, the muter is a great idea for those that lack the proper faculties and need to feel good.

I didn't know there were any National Socialists on this forum. I wish I had known.

I still would however engage them politely, and also respect their opinions which they are entitled to have.

As to making the world a shittier place, those who can't be described as National Socialists are doing a mighty fine job of it. In fact, Australians are doing a pretty fine job at ruining Australia. You see, the Australian Government is only a by product and microcosm of the Australian People and their attitudes about being owed a living by society. When you want everything, the day will come when you get nothing.

But you see, I don't label people I disagree with as National Socialists or Communists. I've been known to call a couple of people Lefty, but that is what they are but it is certainly not a label attributed in order to marginalise or defame.

Ofcourse, this does not apply to you who would attribute National Socialism and by extension Hitler to some people's views, probably because they do not share your SJW views as Libertarians that they are. Yes it seems inconvenient to you that Libertarians are the nemesis of the average SJW, or rather the SJW drive seems to regularly embark on campaigns to confine Libertarian-ism because of the off chance that a few delicate souls like yourself get offended. We are seeing this all the time, starting with new so called anti-villification laws in the ACT and the blanket ban on dog races in NSW.

I never claimed to know the ins and outs of Marxism, and I don't even claim to know all about my profession. I am continuously learning, always have my head buried in Manuals to remain up to date, and I am reviewed and tested regularly. I am however very professional at what I do, and very proficient.

I also take a massive interest in politics, and unfortunately, I am eye deep in it too and part of the machine in Australia. I say unfortunately, because it is a stressful environment and a bit of a blood sport really. There are however, very good people engaged within it, who have sincere values and objectives to better society as a whole, and some of them no doubt will again score the National Socialism tag because you probably vote for the other mob.

Anyhow, carry on. I hope you enjoy your little safe space. You can exclude me as well. No no, I insist that you do. I don't want to be responsible for making you feel unsafe.

As for me, well I must be a Greek. I am use to talking politics over a game of tavli and a coffee and at times a heated exchange too. But we always remain friends, no matter how heated things get and by how much we disagree. It's a tradition I suppose over a nice strong Greek Metrio. But we are responsible for Democracy on this planet too, and our thinkers were ahead of their time, as opposed to now where people like yourself seem to be regressing.

Carry on folks. I just had to respond to the National Socialism label. It seems that is all people can do. Throw around labels associated with Hitler because they vote Liberals or something or actually value Abbott's sincerity. Yes, probably the most sincere politician in a long time. A man with a pair of balls and a back bone. I bet he would not be needing a "safe place".

But nevertheless MCJULES, it seems your program is in high demand on this forum, so I can't begrudge this. Far be it from me to deny the delicate souls their muted sanctity from a robust free discourse.

Is there a way to mute on mobile?

If you're using an iOS device you can try the Kitt Browser. I know it won't work properly on mobile yet because the page styles are different in mobile mode but you will see the "Show/hide mute buttons" if it's running. Fixing that is easy though so let me know.

I might try writing a mobile add-on for Firefox for Android one day but I don't have the motivation at the moment, trying to get my work done before I go on holidays :)

Totally agree with the debating part. However, when a person who is a national socialist who pretends to be a troll who is pretending to be a national socialist because they know that their views are pathetic, there's really no debate to be had, and my day and life is better off not dealing with people who actively make the world a shitter place.

If someone bases their opinion on whether things like man made climate change exists on the views of non-educated politicians (SHOCKING NEWS; That they seem to agree with about social issues on!) rather than reaching out and doing some research themselves, what could they honestly have worth saying that isn't just more uninformed shit?

There's never been a time in human history where every facet of collective human knowledge is available at the mere action of making a few keystrokes, yet there's a bunch of utter tards on here who think they know the "real truth" and that there are massive conspiracies about "cultural Marxism" and scientific hoaxes, lol. It's hilarious. I actually feel sorry for them. So much so that the best action is to simply ignore they exist - because one thing is for sure - history isn't going to remember morons with completely uninformed and embarrassing views other than in terms of a comedic routine or to warn of the issues that lie within disenfranchised young males that have no education but think they actually know what they're talking about.

The muter is one of the greatest things to happen to this forum.

I'm not sure how ignoring an ignoramus is a bad thing. I have better things to do with my time than try to educate faux-trolls that are embarrassed of their own views.

Isn't the purpose of having a forum to talk, argue and debate with persons who have different views? Just imagine the forum where everyone is love dovey and everyone agrees with each other like a big huge wank-fest? It would be a very boring forum and it will die off no doubt.

I mean seriously, I got to wonder about many of you guys feeling a need to "create your own safe place" on a forum. It's pretty weak if you ask me. You all need to grow some balls literally! Not everyone is going to be agreeing with your views so let's just be man or woman enough to accept this as a way of life and a completely normal facet of life. You should all be encouraging a nice and robust discourse, not "creating safe places" and muffling the voices of those who do not agree or subscribe to your theories, opinions or views.

And let's not engage those with different views with insincere accusations or defamatory remarks because they don't share your SJW views. If you ask me, it's those who are the unpopular ones (like me), and those with alternative views, the libertarians among us who offer this forum so much. Without them, you just got a big huge wank-fest!

I mean seriously people. It really is quite pathetic. I really don't understand how some of you get through life tbh. Grow some balls, Grow a back spine. Stand up for what you believe in. The most important thing in life is having values that you adhere to, and not just apply selectively.

I personally would feel disgusted if I felt the need in silencing someone because I don't like them, or I disagree with them, or they insulted me for one reason or another.

Have actually updated this extension a couple of times since I last posted in here. It's now up to version 0.4. Includes new muting functionality and a usability fix to the youtube player :)

New Features:
1. You can now mute entire threads from the forum thread listing pages. They get moved to the bottom of the page that they appear on so you barely notice them.
2. Mute icons are now hidden by default but can be shown by click on the "Show mute buttons" links at the top and bottom of pages.
http://i.imgur.com/LvyGfH1.png
3. You can mute posts that quote a user that you have muted.
4. Ability to change the youtube player so that it uses the modern widescreen player. Includes a setting to change the size of the player in the post and the ability to fullscreen the video on the page.

So this
http://i.imgur.com/YNpxUhT.png
becomes
http://i.imgur.com/8XPLLRa.jpg

5. New slightly better looking options page to make all this functionality properly configurable.
http://i.imgur.com/DFV2zDF.png

You can download the latest crx here or if you use the developer mode to install download the zip here

Mate, you just muted yourself!

More than a few of us have gotten sick and tired of the same multis and trolls derailing threads and utilising their "free speech". I generally enjoy this place so here is my gift to you...

442 Muter is a quick and dirty extension for Google Chrome that will remove threads and posts from users that you don't want to hear from. So this:
http://i.imgur.com/a6d4vD1.png
becomes this:
http://i.imgur.com/UVGXLFV.png

Ahh zen

As an added bonus it includes a usability fix to the youtube player so you get the proper widescreen player that can be made full screen without having to visit the youtube site.

The project is open source and available on Github so if you're a coder and want to improve it, send me a pull request. There's heaps of things it could do to make it easier and nicer but I'm pretty busy and probably won't update it often myself if at all.

Installation instructions
1. Download the extension crx from here
2. Follow these instructions to add it to your browser

How to configure the extension

Muting a user or thread
Easy! Simply:
1. Click on the show mute buttons link at the top and bottom of the page
2. Click the mute icon next to the user's name on a post or the thread name on the listing page
http://i.nextmedia.com.au/Utils/ImageResizer.ashx?w=400&h=250&n=http://i.imgur.com/ODdg3z7.png

Unmuting a user
1. Open up the extension options page from the extensions tab
2. Click on the remove link next to the name you want to remove
http://i.imgur.com/HtxtPkz.png

Feel free to post questions or feedback. Of course if I've muted you I probably won't respond

Latest Release 0.6 - Release Notes

Yes absolutely! Credit where credit is due.

This is absolutely brilliant.

It allows me to create a nice little safe space by excluding all those I disagree with. Pretty soon, since most people do disagree with me, my posts will be the only ones I will be able to read. At the very most there might be one or two others who might make the chop and this forum would be just a much nicer and pleasant place.

Just one question, does it work with moderators too?

Well done!

Small update to the extension (v 0.6).
 1. The "Show/Hide Mute buttons" button is now next to the Post Reply button and styled the same as other buttons on the new site
 2. Personally not a huge fan of the circle avatars so you can turn that off in the extension. You can also make the avatars (the larger version in posts) whatever size you like.

I've released a new version of the extension that works with the new forum software. The only bit of existing functionality missing is the ability to mute quotes but with the collapsed threads it's probably not as big a deal. Will be difficult to implement as people can change their names now and there is no identifier in the posts...

You'll also have to remove all your existing users and threads from your config and re-mute them as the ids have all changed.

Apart from that it's all working. You can grab the release from here.

Excellent

Can you set up the blocking of posts with quotes by these fuckwits? It'd be a good feature.

The new update has it. Download it on the previous page.
That's correct. Forgot to mention how it works but instead of completely muting the post, it leaves the posters' details and hides the post behind a link you can click to read it...if you want to.

The post muting also extends to the signature so now I have to unblock scotty21's and TheSelectFew's posts.

Yeah true.

Its good advice, it's just unfortunate that I have to get an email and a pop-up every time he wants to grace me with his personal prejudice.
