Brilliant news! where'd you find this update?
If City can continue this run of form with a few more impressive displays on the trot, I reckon (hope) they can surpass 12K.

10,609 now. Climbing fast.

Probably too much of an ask for this season... but i think next year could be the first time we see the combined Melbourne memberships exceed 40,000!

This year i'd expect to see it end up around 26,000 Victory, 13,000 City....

Within 2-3 years there is every likelihood that we will boast 80,000 memberships between the 2 big Sydney & Melbourne Clubs.
- WSW to move into new stadium.... memberships to reach into the 20's?
- Sydney to boast a big marquee on the backing of a new TV deal making this more financially viable - Memberships increase to 15k or so?
- Victory sustainable....edging closer to 30,000 which is there target?
- City.... sustained success + potential big name marquee down the track - 15k+?

All of the above is speculative... but none of the above is more than a 10/20% increase on their best.

That isn't unrealistic (80k members across the 4 clubs). The only thing is I can't see another 2500 signing up as City members this year. Maybe if they win the league they should get 13k easily next season.

10,676 as of 5pm. City Membership gathering some great late momentum. Will be interesting to keep an eye out and see if that figure continues to climb before their first Home Fixture against the Glory on Friday night.

Can anyone in Melbourne, give some insight into the amount of media coverage the A-League is getting in the Herald Sun and The Age? Massive improvements in terms of quantity in The Australian and the Sydney Morning Herald.

10,702 for city - up 200 for the day, almost 500 since Friday. Should be over 11k pre first home game.

I'd imagine they would do memberships at the game also so might get a few hundred more.

Interesting stats..

AFL Total membership 2016 - 875,197
A-League Total membership 2016/17 - 100,339

AFL Average attendance 2016 - 31,877
A-League average attendance 2015/16 - 12,309 (at around 20,000 so far 2016/17, but will drop)

Question is, AFL total membership 8 times that of the A-League, yet crowd average just under triple the A-League.

Why?

Because there membership numbers are bullszit , laughable that a team can have 75k members and 20k turn up to a game. No one in the AFL cheerleading media down in melb doesn't call it out.
Only the WA & SA sides have true figures , the rest are made up.

They actually were starting to call out the crowd issues, most blaming it on TV which is true to a degree. But in general the atmosphere and support is dead, incentive is low to catch a game live if its not big.

That's because their membership figures include any type of membership ie club membership which can be something like $30 which doesn't entitle you to any games but gives you the usual packs and updates from the club.

That's what I hate about the AFL membership. They go on about how many members they have but it's not a really accurate representation of the level of support they are really giving the club.

A full season ticketed member is not the same as a $30 token member.

Most clubs in the a-league get the majority of their membership numbers from full season ticket holders, hence why the crowd figures aren't as disproportionate. Take WSW for example, they have a cap on ticketed membership, and is why their tally only includes those one's.

Following on from that if we are able to grow our base to 140k within the next few years we'd be doing very very well imo.

You can't take animals to stadiums so thats why AFL crowd and membership numbers don't correlate.

The other side of AFL memberships is that Victorians have a culture of buying memberships as a sign of supporting the club. This is regardless of any consideration for attending games or getting value from it.

I think that culture extends across the league.

I'll update the post above tomorrow, as a number of clubs haven't updated their stats and nor has the FFA.

If we want to crack 110k we'll need to get to 104k this week, as I think it will be tricky to pick up another 6k in the following month as it will slow down hard as every week goes by.

Just updated the membership tally above.

Grant Meryer from Adelaide has just updated me. Their membership coming into this game as of last night is 9,293. So a good little jump this week from them too considering the loss to WSW.
