What is it with AFL people trolling and so paranoid at the moment - Mick Malthouse, Mr Football, Gil and the AFL board plus tonight Eddie McGuire.

The gaelic playing field  is a bit bigger than your traditional soccer pitch

can't play gaelic football on a pitch with football dimensions

can play aussie rules - a game for cricket ovals - on a pitch with football dimensions

Bahahhaha. Oh lord fmd. Do they know no bounds? They have no shame. This is the clearest case of "if you cant beat em, join em" ive seen in my life. I think its safe to say they're preempting the inevitable demise of their flagship product.

Talk about the desperate gasps of a dying empire.

Unfortunate reality is somewhere in the world a super star player or super star club will visit australia whenever they damn well feel like it, and there's nothing the AFL can do about it. except rush them with AFL players and give them a red ball to fuck around with in front of a tv camera

By fielding smaller teams and playing on a soccer pitch, he said it was easier than full-scale football to take overseas and may one day form a part of the AFL's international expansion plans.

When will the AFL hierarchy stop oscillating their hands up and down their phalluses and forget expansion overseas?

I've lived and travelled overseas for years and years and have never, ever read one word about aerial ping pong.

The story must have only appeared in SA, WA, Victorian or Tasmanian media. Anywhere else it would be ridiculed.

it on EuroSport

it's a great idea by AFL,   give a way to grow a game out side of Australia where there is no grounds that match AFL size

i can see AFL X leagues starting up in many European cities .....but i do feel 7 players is to small, 9 players is perfect

AFL x is nore more dumb then European handball, or beach volleyball

The thinking is pretty sound on this one:
- the AFL can only have a 6 month season because it shares grounds with cricket
- there is plenty of demand from patrons to see more footy
- a small sided game can take account of soccer pitches over the summer, giving patrons and pat TV subscribers more footy over the summer
- there isn't a lot of sporting competition over the summer, so there are sponsorship dollars to be made

Mr AFL,now I know you have lost it.
Rugby 7's and NRL. 9's or whatever are not functional local competitions at elite level. They are short slap and tickle games played usually by b grade talents to generate publicity and revenue.
If you seriously think a short sided 2kick game played on a small field can be a serious competiton tagged onto the end of an already strenuous season where most players only get one month off before commencing preseason you are deluded.
If you market something enough you will always get people to watch. But unless AFL are seriously thinking of undermining their major asset,by significantly changing rules and encouraging their elite players to play what will be two different games it won't happen.

Like Crimson wrote, it is very risky to make a product that will potentially damage their main one.

Isn't that what is happening with cricket? Kids like the shorter version?

If the x game has more action and scoring and is aimed at kids won't the normal version eventually or quickly seem dull?

I cant see how small sided AFL can ever work

If you catch the ball nobody can touch you
Players can kick the ball 50 meters
There is no ceiling to the goal

Basically grab the ball from anywhere on the field and kick a goal

I assume it would be like netball. That perhaps only certain players can score and from within a designated zone?

I could give two shits what AFL does but what does concern me is where are they going to be playing matches.
Can you imagine games played at AAMI park or SFS. Its bad enough when we have to contend with Rugby and NRL tearing up our pitches during the end of our season and now we have to worry about AFL. If they want to play this sport so badly they can play it at the MCG, put out soccer dimensions on the field and away you go.

The trial game played at the weekend between Coburg and Northern VFL teams ended 170-140, so scoring was very easy by the looks of it. They even got 10 points for goals kicked from outside a 40m line across the pitch. They played 10 minute quarters.

Did they use official balls? Dont the women use lighter balls so their kicks can go further?

- play it over winter
- they have reduced the players by over 50%
- they play it on a square pitch

As was said before reengineer the ball and make it heavier / softer etc so it can't go as far.

They did it in futsal.

It's an easy fix if they want to go down that path.

Exactly. Undermining their own flagship product. Good luck with reinventing the wheel every 5 mins.
