Not directly AF but may affect in the future

Retractable roof proposed for MCG

The Melbourne Cricket Ground could get a facelift with a retractable roof being proposed to the famous stadium.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground could be about to undergo another facelift with a retractable roof being proposed for the famous stadium.

MCG boss Stephen Gough has suggested installing a lightweight roof over the iconic venue in order to remain as “the benchmark” in Australian sport.

“I think technology is on our side here and the engineers are working on all sorts of solutions about (a roof),” Gough told the Herald Sun.

“And that would be something the MCC would have to look at.

“You could have a lightweight, retractable roof if it was felt that was what we wanted to have.

However, the proposal faces major difficulties with the MCG one of the largest – 173.6m long and 148.3m wide – stadia in the world and a new roof would not necessarily add to the capacity of the ground.

Also to be considered is public perception with the MCG arguably the country’s most beloved stadium.

However, Gough believes the benefits of a retractable roof outweigh any backlash.

“I think the opportunities are quite enormous,” he said

Gough also said there could be major changes in the future for the precinct surrounding the stadium with a number of areas earmarked to benefit from any new construction.

That roof looks mighty expensive, are the benefits worth it?

I don't think so.

Predicted cost would be in the vicinity of 500-600million  ''FOR A ROOF''

The AFL trying to scam more public money. That is all it is. The MCC are purely a mouthpiece for the AFL. Gough is ex Carlton CEO.

Fuck me dead, what a colossal waste of money. Why do they actually need a roof? It's not like the rain has ever stopped big crowds from turning up to the main AFL games.

Finishing top in some none existent stadium dick measuring contest is a pathetic reason.

AFL/MCC  ''Sydney is getting 1.6b towards stadiums with roofs, now we want that also.  Melbourne tax payers, we need to spend this money on the best stadium in the Universe or risk being invaded by foreign stadiums'''

Well that is how i imagined it. haha

"Also to be considered is public perception with the MCG arguably the country’s most beloved stadium"

Can't help themselves. Just have to try and prove somehow that something Melbourne is ahead-of-the-pack quality. There are many good stadiums around Australia that are far better aesthetically than a big, grey oval where seagulls fight over chips

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

It's the biggest event space for a city that is very, very serious about hosting events of all sorts, and I can attest firsthand how important that is to the state's economy, so dropping half a billion on major upgrades (as long as they're practicable) is perfectly sensible, in general terms.

Just as long as it comes with a hydraulically lowerable field with retractable rectangular seating, it's all good!

I can't believe someone got paid for such a shit photoshop job; look at the light tower getting erased on the bottom left!

In fact, why would the light towers even be there if there's a roof like that in the way?!

I'd be ashamed if I did such a shit job making a shit meme in five minutes for you idiots on 442, let alone being paid by a media giant for it.

I can't do the maths, but I wonder if the MCG would become the biggest building by volume in the world if a roof was added? Surely it'd be in with a shot.

Jealously of the world's most livable city and sporting capital coming through loud and clear in this thread.

You might want to put the money for this MCG roof idea towards your infrastructure problems that will no doubt arise once your predicted population hits7-8million.

Melbourne is already starting to become gridlocked at peak hour and your Vic government has so little infrastructure plans to combat the upcoming problems.

Sydney is spending 70billion over 4 years on unlocking sydneys traffic problems, Melbourne plans to spend 100b over 30 years.

Your city wont be livable for much longer pal.

Jealous as.

Andrews government has done more for infrastructure than any state government has in a long time. The prioritising of investment in public transit over toll road tunnels will be celebrated as a wise choice in years to come while poor Sydney people are driven further and further west, with the class segregation that goes with it.

In the meantime I'll enjoy being able to meet my mates for a beer after the streetlights come on, unlike Bairdtopia. :)

lol, that's not a picture of Melbourne. You did a Google image search for "ugly Chinese city", but you're not fooling anyone.

Moving from misinformation to outright lies.

Sounds like you're full of shit without posting sources, and if that it just sounds like partisan talking points.

Fact is that the actual rollout of infrastructure in the last few years (not just the talk but actual shovels in ground) has been remarkable in Melbourne, the level crossing removals, the Monash widening, the Western Distributor and the Regional Rail Link as a prime examples.

Sounds like you've been caught out in a lie and are holding onto some serious jealousy.

On Saturday in Sydney I had to trudge miles on foot from the stadium (no train there to speak of) to the hipster bar where I met up with a prominent Sydney FC supporter from this forum, my drink cost $19! Then I barely started it before we had to get out of there to beat your nanny state lockout laws, I was like, no worries, just catch a night train like we have 24 hours on weekends in Melbourne? Nope, $40 taxi. Had to wait until 7am for the first flight out of that shithole because of curfews due to NSW never spending on a new major airport in over a century! What were you saying about infrastructure?

Sydney can be a very nice place if you can afford it; my brother had a flat right on the water in Woolloomooloo when he was in the Navy, went to his rooftop for New Year's and it was amazing, but when it comes to infrastructure and cost of living, without mentioning your ridiculously politicised lockout laws, even the most biased of Tard haters on here have to admit that Sydney is way, way behind the eight ball of what a major international city should be.

Sydney has the largest infrastructure pipeline of any state in Australia, and according to the government's own forecasts, there will be an estimated $74 billion in transport infrastructure spending just in NSW over the next four years, according to Colliers International.

http://www.smh.com.au/business/property/confidence-returning-to-old-estates-in-sydneys-west-20161020-gs778v.html

Infrastructure Victoria has released a plan that recommends the state government spend up to $100 billion over the next three decades.

Like i said Victoria will have a population the size of Sydney maybe larger. Vic Gov plans on putting all those extra people in Melbourne while Sydney creates its second city in Parramatta and spends a truck load on transport infrastructure.

Ignores my points and pretends that Parramatta isn't in metro Sydney.

You're going off sources that are based of non committed future estimates over multiple election cycles, I'm referring to projects actually in work.

There is no word for your arguments other than delusional.

I'd be happy to hear about any actual plans for the good people of Sydney, but unfortunately you're selling yourself a bridge; which is funny because that and an opera house you've never been inside is all you got! :)

I'm from Melbourne and this is a terrible idea, stadium is already iconic and this roof won't improve crowds on wet days. Because people won't turn up regardless if it's raining.

We could use that money to make a 50,000 seater for victory like the government could have done initially.

That is the point. To steal Govt money away from updating AAMI to 40,000. The AFL And MCC are good at this, taking money from everyone else.

The AFL trying to scam more public money. That is all it is. The MCC are purely a mouthpiece for the AFL. Gough is ex Carlton CEO.

Its not the AFL, or the MCC. Its Stephen Gough on his own as part of a brainstorming thing on the future of Melbourne. The MCG facebook and twitter flatly denied any roof was wanted or proposed at this time.

Its not the point at all, this was one mans idea for the future of the stadium - and he's retiring. There is no current proposal to upgrade Aami to 40,000, and moneys available for stadium and facility upgrades arent necessarily going to be available to others if the AFL clubs didnt get them.

Not to mention that the MCG is largely self funding - The Vic Governments contributions to the MCG are less than 120 million since 1989, and that includes $77 million spent in 2002 on the Northern Stand when the Feds bailed - and for the Commonwealth Games at that - and $30 million for Southern Stand upgrades in 2011. Most of the 400 million cost of the Northern Stand was funded by loans, like the Southern Stand before it. With a build cost of $268 million its very likely that more taxpayer money was spent on Aami Park being built than has been spent on the MCG in the last 40 years or so, let alone Docklands which had no taxpayer funds put into it.
