Hoping for Papas with Brebner as assistant. We need to ensure continuity of the culture in the squad.

Brebner needs to remain involved. As an outsider to Victory, he’s done a great job in the circumstances and hopefully Kirdar, Anderson, Barnett and LLL remain heavily involved at MV next season and eventually get moves to Europe. Brebner’s honesty in his press conferences has impressed me particularly, and some of the football he’s produced has been excellent. Him and Carl Veart show that coaching development is working in this country, and that while some foreign coaches, like Carl Robinson, are fantastic and helpful for Australian football, we should be looking to find the next Ufuk Talay before we immediately look abroad.

Ja has his fans within the board . But pappas is favourite. If alosi is appointmented then the board haven't learnt from the Mehmet debacle and kurz

I’m calling bollocks on that story, or at least wishful thinking. It says:

“It is worth mentioning that another one of Victory’s choices is Socceroos veteran and former Brisbane Roar mentor John Alois, who excelled as a footballer but has little experience as a coach in his career.

err, “little experience” ...... he has 134 games coached in the HAL, that’s not far behind Muscat 😂

Victory coaching decision may come as early as this week
Michael Lynch
August 9, 2020 — 2.04pm

Melbourne Victory are drawing close to a decision on their new head coach, with board members set to make a call as early as this week following conversations on Sunday and with other discussions scheduled for Monday.

Ange Postecoglou's assistant at Japanese champions Yokohama F. Marinos, Arthur Papas, is the favourite ahead of former Socceroo John Aloisi, the ex-Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar coach.

But Victory's interim coach Grant Brebner is the wildcard in the equation and now a contender for the top job.

The former championship-winning midfielder has impressed many with the way he has guided a squad, which has been gutted since the A-League restart.

Brebner has put his faith in youngsters and playing an open brand of football rather than stacking the defence with experienced players and grinding out results.

In doing so he has done the club – and whoever takes over as head coach – a service, as it has been able to guage the mental strengths as much as the technical ability of the talented teens it has on its books.

The youngsters did Brebner – and Victory – proud on Saturday evening when they demolished Perth Glory, a team that only needed one point to make the finals, 4-0.

Still, Brebner, who spent several years at Manchester United and then played in the English Championship and Scottish Premier League before coming to Australia, will be seen as an outsider given his lack of senior coaching experience. His most recent job has been working with the Victory youth set.

Papas comes with Postecoglou's imprimatur and is understood to have made two presentations already, both impressing decision makers with the detail and analysis he provided.

The 40-year-old has had extensive experience both at home and overseas in a career that has seen him work in a variety of head coach and assistant roles.

Melbourne born, Papas worked at the AIS while still in his twenties and was Victorian coach of the year in 2011, when he had just turned 30, having led Oakleigh Cannons to the grand final that year.

Papas subsequently worked with the Indian under-23 team and had success in Indian club soccer before returning home to lead Oakleigh to the FFA Cup quarter-finals in 2015. After that he had spells with Green Gully in the NPL and then in the Saudi Pro-League as an assistant coach.

But it is through his association with Postecoglou at Yokohama that Papas is probably best known, helping the ex-Socceroos boss to lead the team to its first J.League title in 15 years. This year he was elevated to the title of head coach under Postecoglou.

Aloisi is a much better known candidate, having played in the English Premier League, La Liga and the Serie A and at a World Cup with the Socceroos.

His coaching period at Melbourne Heart was difficult and he ended up getting sacked, but he subsequently took the reins at Brisbane and led them to the semi-finals of the A-League playoffs. He has been working in media since quitting Roar in December 2018.

Victory's final game of the season is on Wednesday night when they play Western Sydney Wanderers.

Having thumped Perth, Brebner is expected to retain the same starting line-up.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/victory-coaching-decision-may-come-as-early-as-this-week-20200809-p55jzz.html

I see that Aloisi jumping just before he was fired - which was an absolute certainty - is working for him as he must have hoped.

It reflects so much that is wrong with Australian A League football that Aloisi, with his abysmal track record at two clubs, is even considered for the Victory job, let alone being close to getting it.

What kind of business appoints someone to take charge who has previously crashed and burned at not one but two similar businesses.  Insane, completely insane.  Aloisi would do nothing but create more damage at Victory.  Nice guy, good tv talent, demonstrably can't coach at this level - yet.

What I can't forgive Aloisi for is not being prepared to drop down to the NSL and prove his chops there.  He wants the silver spoon for a third time.  Papas has earned his shot at the job.  Aloisi expects it by right of inheritance.

Aloisi could not bring himself to play younger players, the older the better. He under-estimated the A League he coached in, by thinking an old Macaroni and others would suffice. Wrong!!! If he gets the Melbourne Victory gig, the youngsters should jump ship asap!

Macaroni was fine. One of the best players to watch in the A League and 9 goals in 28 games in a side playing shite is not too shabby .... feel free to
pick on the other 15 over 30 signings though.

Victory are on the cusp of a new era, these young guys have to keep getting game time, that Kirdar is very confident. How he, along with Lawrie-Lattanzio, Barnett, Anderson, and Nishikawa didn't play earlier in the year, the supporters should be up in arms!
Silly Kurz plays Broxham as a CB, that leaving Central Midfield too thin. Plays guys like Paulsen and I forget that other guy, (Trimboli's deadly duo}, Basha though, isn't that bad. LLLCoolJ could of played ahead of Kamsoba quite alot of times as well.
That second silly coach Saliva-something didn't play them either. Well, the two boneheads fell on their swords, and the youngsters are thriving.
Do Di Pietro and co, really want to pick someone that was stagnant to the concept of youth, who left the Roar before he was tapped on the shoulder?
Will Athiu go to Mariners and score 12 goals next season? Hope to see some backflips out of that corner as well!
Papas would be frontrunner quite obviously, I hope that Brebner is in the Victory football system as his assistant, his passion is that of Errol Flynn!
That bonehead out at Wanderers better play the youngsters like Grozos, especially with their academy or he will get flicked next year.

2020-21 Membership prices announced with a base membership fee plus a "pay as you go" model for member priced matchday tickets.

Probably sensible seeing as we don't know where we'll stand with covid next season, and we always needed a solution to so many seats in the reserved sections at AAMI Park being taken up by no-shows.

Correct me if i'm wrong. So you buy your membership ($120-230 depending on tier) and then you need to buy a ticket (at a reduced price) for each home game you attend. https://gomvfc.com.au/base-memberships/

Yep, starting at $120 for the general admission full price base membership, then you'd buy tickets for each game you want to go to at roughly half price.

I sit up in Premium B at AAMI Park and there's always so many people locking in a seat for the season and only showing up like 50% of the time, this will fix that problem hopefully.

Hopefully when you buy a ticket it works on your membership card barcode instead of having to print or use a mobile ticket each game.

It's also a huge assumption that the 20/21 season will start this year. The clubs have already indicated that they have no interest in starting a new season unless fans can attend games.

A-League maestro could have been playing here six years ago – but the FFA ‘had to google him'

...Thompson said: “There was a game that we played him when he was playing for Guangzhou Evergrande (a heavyweight Chinese team who competed in the Asian Champions League against Victory in 2014).“We were 2-0 up in that game, Diamanti had a little bit of a quieter game in the first half.
But he came out flying in the second half – and I tell you what, I’m still having my weekly colonoscopy because of it.
“He was outstanding! He scored two goals and contributed to them (coming back to win 4-2).“Straight after the game the hierarchy of Melbourne Victory were looking to sign him. I think they spoke to his agent, he might have been coming out of contract, and spoke to his club.
“Then they went to the FFA and said: ‘Look, we want to sign Diamanti – he’s an unbelievable player and we think he’ll excite fans of the A-League.”

The FFA at the time had a marquee fund in place which could be used to pay a portion of a star player’s salary, a project put in place to attract big-money marquees to the competition.

But Thompson claims that the FFA didn’t believe Diamanti was worthy – despite having 17 caps for Italy and having played for clubs like West Ham.

“The FFA response at the time sort of shows where football was … back then it was: ‘Look, I don’t know who the player is. If I have to Google him we’re not willing to fork out or give any funding’ that was needed for any A-League team to bring over a player of Diamanti’s quality.

“Just because they didn’t know who the player was and they had to google it, we missed out on his prime (of) someone of his quality.....”

I believe its a UK-type membership strategy.

I like it for 4 reasons:
1. Its a short-term solution during COVID if crowd numbers are capped (or banned). Fans won't lose as much money, but the club still gets a financial return.
2. If fans can't attend home games in some weeks, they won't lose as much money, but the club still gets a financial return.
3. It will eliminate the "23,000 sellouts" at AAMI Park when the glory days return. A sellout will actually mean 30,000 (or close to it).
4. This is hopefully the first step towards us leaving Marvel.

It’s interesting some clubs have gone early on this. It’s by no means clear how many clubs will be in the competition next season (could be 10, 11 or 12) or how many games they will play (22, 26 or 27 games?)

This move though does allow Victory fans the chance to provide the club with financial support in uncertain times, that in itself could be the difference between good signings being made and below average signings.

All good as long as your board doesn't appoint JA coach.

Why am I concerned, as a Brisbane supporter?  Because I've gone through the pain of seeing Aloisi(s) in action, and a competitive Victory side are a keystone species, so to speak, of the A League.  We need MV to come back firing next season.  We can all forget that if Aloisi is appointed.

Yes, this is a public forum and it gives me no pleasure to post against the appointment of someone who is obviously a very likeable person.  But this is a public position and as such we are all entitled to comment.  John Aloisi has other options outside coaching.  He's a talented media pundit  - telegenic, lucid, intelligent and articulate.  That's where he should be directing his energy.

He's had two good shots at the coaching game now, and it hasn't worked.  Time to look in the mirror and be realistic.

No we don’t.

I really dislike the argument of “when Sydney, Victory and WSW struggle, it’s bad for the league and everyone loses interest”.

It’s simply not true. Sure fans of those clubs might jump off the bandwagon, but it’s not gonna effect other clubs.

Lol there is nowhere near the same amount of hype around the league when dinky clubs like Adelaide or Perth are out performing the big clubs.

A Cornthwaite puff piece on 7 News and a token article in the Advertiser when Adelaide United win hardly makes up for the fact that most of the national football media are based in Sydney and Melbourne and  are naturally more interested in how those teams are doing.
