Griffin slams FFA over Asian import quota Adelaide United chairman Greg Griffin has slammed Football Federation Australia (FFA) over its intention to make Asian players a compulsory feature of the A-League's foreign contingent. A fuming Griffin claimed clubs are stridently opposed to FFA's decision to introduce a four plus one quota rule from the 2018-19 season, and accused the governing body of acting on political motivations. The pending change, confirmed by FFA chief executive David Gallop and subject to final review at the end of 2017-18, will not impact clubs' current quota of five foreigners but means one of those players must come from an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) members federation. It will move Australia's top tier in line with other AFC competitions and force A-League clubs to scour the continent for talent. "There is strident objection from the clubs to any change to the existing visa rules," Griffin told AAP. "That objection will remain; we see absolutely no point in going 4+1 and compromising the product we provide in some attempt to curry favour with the AFC. "It's ultimately a fruitless exercise because the problems between FFA and the AFC run far deeper than the composition of our visa players." The concept has long caused friction. FFA is keen to align with Asian football, where the Asian Champions League operates on a 3+1 rule, while attracting more interest from overseas TV markets. But only two clubs - Western Sydney and Newcastle - currently have an Asian player on their books and there's concern the move would dilute the league's growing quality, with the continent's ever-inflating wages rendering it tough to afford top Asian stars. "That is in no small way due to the completely insufficient distribution of revenues that have flowed to the clubs under the FFA administration which is now the subject of review," Griffin said. It's understood FFA discussed the issue at length with chairmen last October, before telling CEOs at a meeting in Melbourne the following month. There was a mixed response but strong enough collective opposition that FFA promised to "prudently review the implementation" at the end of the 2017-18 season before making a final decision. Griffin said that "unsatisfactory" compromise would not be accepted and foreshadowed a response from the Australian Professional Football Clubs Association, which represents all 10 clubs and of which he is chair. Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata called for more dialogue on the issue. "It has been suggested but nothing formal has come from FFA advising clubs that it is being introduced," Pignata said. "We as clubs would still like the opportunity to discuss this proposal with FFA." The news comes amid reports the Chinese Football Association is set to reduce to three the number of foreign players Chinese Super League teams are allowed to field in each match. The pending rule change has already delayed James Holland's transfer from the Reds to Liaoning Whowin and could threaten the careers of other Australian players in China. ©AAP2017 http://wwos.nine.com.au/2017/01/16/13/57/a-league-to-adopt-asian-import-quota-rule

Has he liked anything the FFA have done ever? 3+1 would be bad. 4+1 is the right move. Aligns up better with the confederation, allows for teams in the league to not have to exclude two visa players for AFC. Wouldnt someone like Griffin welcome this as this would give his club more ties to Asia? From an owner point of view opening contacts in Asia would be good?

Doubt it , and I'm not surprised. Often wonder why he's still around. He seems to have taken over from Sage since the Cap-Rort deal muzzled him.

How many clubs have 5 quality foreigners anyway. 4 is enough as i think Afc players will be too expensive. Hopefully an extra spot for a Aussie.

Having 5 visa spots dont "block" an aussie from signing. Nobody is forced to use them all. Roar are only using 3 visa spots, Sydney FC used 4 until the recent signing, Adelaide use 4. Last season Jets, Glory, Nux and Melbourne City had 4 on their books.

Also had Danny Choi as an injury replacement visa player for a brief period.

With all those technically proficient asian youth players regularly outperforming our youth, surely each HAL team can find one asian player Worthy of a spot. When you consider so many of the current Visa players warming benches here, maybe teams here just need better talent scouts in asia.

Griffin comes across as the greatest whinging arse in the country. Maybe he will go back to AFL soon where that shit is lauded.
One third of the Australian Clubs are owned by Asian interests. The League's major sponsor is Asian. The League winners are invited to play in the Asian Champions League where genuine status and fair money resides. Griffin's anti-Asian stance should bite him on his whinging arse.

Davide, that's fine but he is very aggressive, it's embarrassing. Look at pignata's composed response as a better example. Griffin comes across as if he has a negative ffa agenda (and maybe he does).

You can begin by showing how he has done the opposite of what I just said. You mentioned that he's been elected and thus his opinion may be what other owners are also thinking, but they are merely assumptions. The number of times he has come out stronger in a negative sense than any other owner on all issues relating to FFA is mind boggling. I don't even recall him ever coming out into support any initiative that isn't completely contractional. Always thinking in ways to suppress the game by bringing everyone down to the lowest denominator. Just because he knows his club couldn't keep up with the bigger clubs. The only thing he's done recently that I support and see as forward thinking is putting pressure to build a football specific stadium near the city (not with his money of course tho). And really the only way to prove to state Government that it's the right way forward is to prove that Hindmarsh is too small, yet the club still can't sell it out unless playing against Victory. Invest in the squad properly by going above and beyond the salary cap in marketable marquees and the stadium will fill up every time and this will provide a real case for a new stadium. When ADP came to town, the place was packed. And rather than constantly chat about certain marquee players they have missed out on, how about they actually land one for a change. They won the title last year but totally dropped the ball because rather than investing in the club by building those links with new supporters, they chose the cheap route of hoping that everything would fall into place without having to spend any money.

You then rant about the type of marquee that we have seen maybe 3-4 of in A-League history across all teams (all of which were flops on the park but one was good off it) and suggest he should pay for one because you, a fan of another team who has a Russian sugar daddy and the advantage of being in the biggest, best known city in Australia where the benefits of a marquee MIGHT actually exist, would like to see one to prove he has the same passion for a football club as you do.....Someone who runs one of the clubs in the league and has seen us stop being nomads, have a training base and win a fucking championship, premiership and FFA Cup in the same time frame that you joined this forum as a mild mannered young poster who became a hysterical loud mouth who follows a club who has done JACK SHIT trophy wise in the same years Griffin has run United. Griffin can be a tosser, but you talk more shit than even he does. Have a good day :) You haven't brought up any stats to prove that it wouldn't work in Adelaide. All you have done is accused me of going on a rant, then followed it up with your own rant.. Attendances and ratings for Sydney FC, City and Melbourne Victory as well as the league as a whole have risen when marquee players such as Yorke, ADP, Heskey, Kewell, Villa, Cahill were/are playing. FACT. Marquee players grow the club and the game as a whole which is absolutely vital. Adelaide perhaps should try and do the same and attempt to bring some high profile talent with all the evidence previously leaning towards higher crowds and ratings. This would actually help his cause of maybe getting a bigger stadium in the future would it not? What is flawed with that kind of thinking?? What would be your solution then? My point on all this (which btw was also echoed by a number of Adelaide United fans on this thread earlier), is that Griffin has a strong tendency to always take a negative stance on any direction that the FFA take.

And rather than constantly chat about certain marquee players they have missed out on, how about they actually land one for a change. ............ They won the title last year ........... LOL My point isn't about building on the park, it's about building off it. It's what Griffin seems to go on about a lot. So im answering in relation to that. PS where are they now on the ladder? LOL! You are answering a question I did not ask and doing so in a hysterical manner as seems to be your way. It's amazing. Your initial rant was also based on the assertion we pay the bare minimum salary floor and always have done which is just plain wrong. You then took something you made up, ran with it and whipped yourself into a frenzy. Have a good day :) My point on all this (which btw was also echoed by a number of Adelaide United fans on this thread earlier), That's not necessarily in your favour aha

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xGriffin comes across as the greatest whinging arse in the country. If they don't scream for a bigger slice of the TV deal now, the owners sure ain't going to get it because the FFA feel guilty. Whatever the franchises don't get will be divvied up amongst the FFA execs. Vultures are circling around that FoxCash, and grassroots has no say

But this goes way beyond the lead up to the broadcast deal. That to an extent I could understand, but im talking about the plethora of times he has come out in response to any FFA initiative in a negative way. Why else would posters on here say he's a whinger if it was clearly a one off? There's a pattern here and the public are picking up on it. If Di Pietro came out with a negative statement regarding an FFA initiative, you can rest assured the majority of posters would have a different reaction. THey may perhaps disagree with him but it's unlikely he would get so hardly labelled a whinger like we've seen here. Hence why Griffin's pattern of behaviour has caused to establish the opinion football fans on this forum have of him. If you want me to sound less bias, im happy to accept that Arnie is a whinger too. He's another classic example of someone that has a reputation of being a whinger because he has a tendancy to always have an opinion that portrays him as a whiner. Griffin is exactly the same, and as I said before, people on this forum as well as other members of the football community have picked up on it.

One third of the Australian Clubs are owned by Asian interests. The League's major sponsor is Asian. The League winners are invited to play in the Asian Champions League where genuine status and fair money resides. Griffin's anti-Asian stance should bite him on his whinging arse. I agree does this guy ever shut up?? How about he actually pulls out his wallet for a change and actually bring in some top.talent rather than c9nstantly scraping by using the absolute minimum the cap allows and rely on the good will.of the fans to.show up week.in week out. He wants a new stadium but meanwhile he can barely get hindmarsh filled week in week out. Bring in a real marquee and see the place swell. Where to even begin with this post.... . Have a good day :) My point on all this (which btw was also echoed by a number of Adelaide United fans on this thread earlier), That's not necessarily in your favour aha Umm well it is in my favour if they are all saying the same thing Im saying regarding Griffin being a whinging little prick. Happy to go back a few pages and copy paste the responses if you really like.. Yeah...that red mist doesn't help you "get" stuff, does it................................. Fact of the matter is this. Griffin has been firmly much more vocal in a negative sense than any other owner on all things FFA. Myself and the vast majority here can see it and have been vocal about it. You obviously fit in the minority. That's okay buddy, keep fighting the shit fight. Being vocal coz someone is being vocal is obviously a noble cause as oppose to my apparent shit fight aha My shit fight being appealing for some logic and reason when reading articles. If the other owners did not want him pushing their agenda in the media in the lead up to splitting up TV money he wouldn't be chair of the ownership committee.
So you recant your original opinion that he was a tight arse? No he shouldn't recant! Anyone who manages to turn a Championship winning team to wooden spooner material, deserves everything they get. I mean, it takes some doing to achieve that and recognition needs to be given wherever its due!

The squad apparently is costing the full cap + concessions which him and the other owners in the consortium are most responsible for.
- Let's wait and see where we are at the end of the season. We're not the first team to win the title one year and have an average season the next so I'm not sure how this takes "some doing".

That's all good if he is not solely responsible. He is the CEO though and as such will take the brunt of abuse. Was it him who wrote that Press Release? We will never know because no one will own up to it. I want to know who wrote it. One thing not taking responsibility or accepting blames but to abuse the fans is something else.

He's not the CEO, Grant Mayer is. If he was he would deserve even less of the abuse as the CEO takes care of the business side of things, not football operations (though last year we had Petrillo doing both). He's equal majority shareholder with Rob Gerrard and the chairman of the board, yes he should receive some criticism but only where it's factual. The press release was shit as were a number of other ones that have come out in the past. We're not talking about that though, we're talking about the persistent claims that HE is not spending any money on the club and that he's some how pocketing rivers of gold directly from the club.

I mean, it takes some doing to achieve that and recognition needs to be given wherever its due! A couple of things to consider: - He's not solely responsible for signing players.
The press release was shit as were a number of other ones that have come out in the past. We're not talking about that though, we're talking about the persistent claims that HE is not spending any money on the club and that he's some how pocketing rivers of gold directly from the club. Thank you If he is spending the dosh, then it's the same thing. they have a Football department that hasn't a clue.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xGriffin comes across as the greatest whinging arse in the country. Where to even begin with this post.... .
So you recant your original opinion that he was a tight arse? Anyone who manages to turn a Championship winning team to wooden spooner material, deserves everything they get. Like Lederer ?

They have lost a number of their best talent and replaced them with squad players at best, minus the signing of Holland.

They have lost a number of their best talent and replaced them with squad players at best, minus the signing of Holland. Why do I keep logging back in? The only player we realistically could have held onto was Sanchez and maybe Kamau but he was gone 6 months before the season ended and was not a starter at the time. Shit happens. Yes, we replaced them all with shitter players who were desperate last minute signings who we seemingly paid overs for. It sucks. Shithouse squad management. Griffin is not solely responsible for that. Djite - Guardiola Sanchez - Henrique Mauk - Holland Goodwin- Garrucio (goodwin was more effective but Garrucio is easily as good as Goodwin was when he came here and is about 3-4 years younger I believe) They may all be shitter in hindsight but I doubt they are that much cheaper and some of us had higher hopes for these players. Garrucio has been brilliant yet he is the one on the list you WOULD'T expect...... Goodwin and Mauk were always gonna head to Europe no matter which A League club they played for. Djite was staying till the last second when he was offered a pay day in Asia and we had to scrap our plan to buy a winger and got Guardiola to replace him. Kamau - see above Being bottom after 13 rounds is really really shit but we are not the first team it has happened to and won't be the last. If Guardiola had converted his chances we wouldn't be bottom. He could easily have been an upgrade on Djite from glimpses early in the season. His head dropped. If Holland and Isaias had found a way to play together we would look even better. Holland is the one player you say wasn't a shit signing but he is the one who has fit into the team style the least. Do you really want to continue this? Due to tackles from hack players players like Carrusca and Cirio also got no preseason and you can/could tell. We also missed playing our best squad for the first month or more when we played all the top teams and as a result got oursleeves into a hole that this time we couldn't crawl out of because the team was new and didn't have the same bonds as the squad last year had built up over a couple of years. Nah, let's blame Griffin for every single shit thing. Shall we continue?

Mate it's not about hindsight, your fans were already pissed off before even round 1 of the season had kicked off, due the lack of any real recruitment. Or have you forgotten??? I even recall the club having to release a statement on it all at the time, trying to defend themselves from the onslaught of criticism. So the writing was on the wall from the get go. UPDATE: Here is the link of the letter by Mayer to the fans at the end of August defending the clubs position after clearly the fans were furious with the recruitment drive the club had undertaken after the losses of their key personnel : http://www.adelaideunited.com.au/article/grant-mayer-gives-us-an-update/1rh3ureh65lsf1h0l38eq9jv35I never said he was the only person responsible however he is the owner so the buck stops there. He's in charge ultimately (as well as the other minor shareholders).

I never said he was the only person responsible however he is the owner so the buck stops there. He's in charge ultimately (as well as the other minor shareholders). However, if as was also stated, we are spending the same as last year, does the buck really stop with the one releasing funds or the ones choosing the players? What about Ante Kovacevic (sp?) who replaced Petrillo as head of football department? What about Amor who must have had SOME say in signings? I'd like to see the club statement before Rd 1 if you wouldn't mind....not saying I don't believe you but I wasn't paying much attention in the off season, otherwise I think you are referring to a quite recent one regarding squad management (a statement that I actually thought was pathetic and childish and amateur).

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xGriffin comes across as the greatest whinging arse in the country. Where to even begin with this post.... .
So you recant your original opinion that he was a tight arse? Absolutely NOT!! And it's actually quite farcical how some here are backing him on issues surrounding their squad. Well then maybe someone should tell everyone in charge of AUFC recruiting to get a job at McDonalds because Football clearly isn't their forte. That includes Griffin who is maybe worthy of a job in Public Relations.
Actually, I would be really upset if Perth Glory had sent a Press Release like that one. That was the ultimate FU to the fans. This just shows the mentality (corporate culture) that pervades within the pissant team. I would be more upset at that than coming last. AUFC membership will go down next year as a result of it. I would not renew unless there was a full apology.

Well then maybe someone should tell everyone in charge of AUFC recruiting to get a job at McDonalds because Football clearly isn't their forte. That includes Griffin who is maybe worthy of a job in Public Relations. We dropped the ball big time recruitment wise, no doubt. Griffin's answering of questions as head of an ownership committee stating widely held opinions that ruffle a few feathers has absolutely fuck all to do with that. End thread.
I did not mention the press release in the post you quoted and have elsewhere said it was a pile of shit. This is not a thread about that and you have been told as such many times. You seem so familiar, just can't quite put my finger on it aha

Have a good day :)
My point on all this (which btw was also echoed by a number of Adelaide United fans on this thread earlier),
That's not necessarily in your favour aha Umm well it is in my favour if they are all saying the same thing Im saying regarding Griffin being a whinging little prick.
Being vocal coz someone is being vocal is obviously a noble cause as oppose to my apparent shit fight aha
My shit fight being appealing for some logic and reason when reading articles.
If the other owners did not want him pushing their agenda in the media in the lead up to splitting up TV money he wouldn't be chair of the ownership committee.
So you recant your original opinion that he was a tight arse? Absolutely NOT!!
And it's actually quite farcical how some here are backing him on issues surrounding their squad.
Djite - Guardiola Sanchez - Henrique Mauk - Holland Goodwin- Garrucio (goodwin was more effective but Garrucio is easily as good as Goodwin was when he came here and is about 3-4 years younger I believe)
They may all be shitter in hindsight but I doubt they are that much cheaper and some of us had higher hopes for these players.
Kamau - see above
Being bottom after 13 rounds is really really shit but we are not the first team it has happened to and won't be the last.

Your teams recruiting was terrible. And when the pissants started getting restless, the club went on a rampage of its own. it was extremely bad behavior all round from your team. The fact that the fans just swallowed it, is mind boggling. I don't believe we have met, but would gladly meet you at the away supporters when we play you guys at Hindmarsh FEB10. Should be about 100 of us there watching the pissants get demolished. lol

Sure here it is: http://www.adelaideunited.com.au/article/grant-mayer-gives-us-an-update/1rh3ureh65lsf1h0l38eq9jv35I actually updated my previous post. But here it is again. Like I said, im not saying that he's the only person responsible, far from it, but he still ultimately leads the club. When the club needs to spend money it's him who has to take out his wallet, and you would think after losing some of your most valuable talent you would be going all out to build from last year. You would want to make sure Hindmarsh continues to build on that good support it got at the end of last year which would ultimately put him in favour of perhaps ever getting a new stadium built in the city. Instead he dropped the ball.

So you recant your original opinion that he was a tight arse? Absolutely NOT!! And it's actually quite farcical how some here are backing him on issues surrounding their squad. Aha awesome, honestly don't remember that but it doesn't tell me anything I haven't already alluded to. We recruited in a rushed desperate manner and for that many people at our club deserrve to be admoinished. As I have just explained to red sheep though, this thread was about the foreign quota rule and Griffin';s statements on it. All of this is just character assassination in order to make an unrelated point because people don't know how to stay on topic when they debate. It's like when your partner reminds you that 2 years ago you fell asleep in the backyard in your underwear after a party 10 minutes into an argument when all you did was ask her if she would put away the toothpaste after using it.

The waking up in my underwear on the back lawn and even then, it was a joke. A mildly sexist joke but a joke nonetheless.
Even that email needs some context. At the end of last season, Kamau, Goodwin and Pablo (winger, left back/winger, striker) left, early on in the off season we signed Kitto, Garruccio and Marino (winger, left back/winger, striker). Pablo aside, the two Australians were younger guys that really stepped up for us so the replacements were pretty like for like. They stated early on that they were going to take their time picking a visa replacement but they were initially looking at a winger. Just as well they didn't because then offers for Mauk and Djite came in that met their release clauses so they were able to pivot and look for a striker (Guardiola). They then looked to get an Australian winger (Henrique) and a replacement for Mauk (Holland). No one thought those guys were bad players. They just haven't worked out as well (so far) as we hoped they would. An issue is they came late but it takes time to negotiate terms, the Australian talent pool for experienced players isn't that big and when you're reacting it's tough. While it wasn't perfect, the recruitment process they went through wasn't a basket case scenario. Nor was it them being tight arses. If anything I said isn't factually correct, please let me know. I don't care for any more feelpions

But this goes way beyond the lead up to the broadcast deal. That to an extent I could understand, but im talking about the plethora of times he has come out in response to any FFA initiative in a negative way. My very first comment refers to the fact I think he enjoys the spotlight a little too much. I also have many gripes with how United is/was/will be run. I just think he gets jumped on by people on here (the public that are so clever) for saying things they have either been saying themselves (such as his criticism of the cahill fund) or the foreign quota change in this case. I have seen a LOT of people on 442 making the exact points he does but when he says it it is whinging from a small club mentality. OUr views on marquees differ slightly too but you also claimed we spend the salary floor. We don't. We also couldn't have held onto hardly any of the players that left after last season (reasons for which have been spelled out here by various posters but it gets lost in the cacophony of "youse are shit" quoality comments). Also, remove what I said about TV deal and my point still stands. Griffin is the chairman of the ownership committee. He was elected to be so I assume and can be removed if he no longer speaks for the other owners. I'm sure he doesn't speak for them all as the concerns of a club like United are different to a club with an oligarch owner but that is the point of the committee. Fact is that while he is chair of that committee he will be asked for and give comments on ownership issues much more frequently than any of the others and his opinions would be somewhat representative.. The fact he seems to enjoy it so much is another point. The fact that nobody here even thinks about that when they whinge he whinges was my point. Ugh. Feels like i logged in as Bluebird or something.

Where to even begin with this post.... .
But this goes way beyond the lead up to the broadcast deal. That to an extent I could understand, but im talking about the plethora of times he has come out in response to any FFA initiative in a negative way. Ugh. Feels like i logged in as Bluebird or something. double lol

+x+x+x+xGriffin comes across as the greatest whinging arse in the country. I agree does this guy ever shut up?? Spot on.

Spot on with this post. We won the Grand final yet we sold 5 of our starting eleven. Yet the only decent recruit we got was Henrique. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and we should of kept at least 2-3 of those 5. The problem is we sold a couple of good players and didn't find the quality to replace them. Which left us to replace them with 2nd tier players and kids. once we got the remaining key players injured, we were playing with a much weaker squad

He would much prefer to have news circulating that they are close to signing a marketable marquee like a Klose or a Toni but in reality knowing very well they will never actually get one of those players.

You'd think the CEO of first Australian club to make the ACL final would understand the benefits of closer integration with Asia, but that provincial mindset runs deep out there in SA, I guess.

"That objection will remain; we see absolutely no point in going 4+1 and compromising the product we provide in some attempt to curry favour with the AFC.
"It's ultimately a fruitless exercise because the problems between FFA and the AFC run far deeper than the composition of our visa players."
In other words he is saying Australian players are shit.

"Adelaide United chairman Greg Griffin has slammed Football Federation Australia (FFA) over its intention to make Asian players a compulsory feature of the A-League's foreign contingent.
Im starting to think this man is a bit racist.
Also he tends to disagree with almost anything the FFA does, from this to even last week with the olyroos tournament situation, he isnt the type of person who could help grow the game.

He then used that money to buy a 2 million dollar Mansion in one of the richer suburbs in Adelaide. So much for growing the game when any transfer profit he makes goes to his pocket.

Clear BS. Craig was out of contract and signed as a free agent. There's plenty one can be critical about when it comes to Griffin, the agendas people have against him is petty pissantry.

And this is why running the A-league independently at this stage is still problematic. We have some stabilty with owners but unanimous decisions for the greater good of the league would be problematic. Investors are more confident in the game and giving guys like Sage or Griffin free range would only turn other investors away.

The franchise owners don't get punished for failure and not rewarded for innovation other than the bottom line. Thus is not Football Culture to the World's Gold standard.

Here we go again...everyone rags on Griffin for saying what most other people (owners specifically)want to say.
How does everyone continue to ignore the fact he was elected chairman of this owners board thing and is asked to speak on their behalf.
He may enjoy the spotlight a bit too much (and i certainly do have issues with some things he has done at United down the years) and maybe not EVERY owner agrees 100% with what he says but everyone really does ignore this fact no matter how many times it's mentioned in the articles.
If he has not been directly asked to make all these comments lately, taking shots at FFA, then the other owners certainly don't all disagree or he would not be chair....
Think boys....

What a stupid decision. Are there any good players in Asia that would come here for a pittance of a wage?
FFA should instead enforce an U23 Australian player in every starting team to help build the new gen.
Funny enough China just made that exact change. Guess they are a forward looking group

Guess they are a forward looking group How is gifting a position to an U23 domestic player 'forward thinking'? Doesn't reward anything other than a player being young enough - China is not a model you should be looking at with admiration lol. For what it's worth, I reckon pretty much every A-League side would go close to having an U23 Aussie in their best XI this seaon, even at the top end (Victory have Geria, Donachie and Ansell in and around the first team at that 22/23 age bracket, and were happily playing Pasquali (16 years old in case you have forgotten) before he was lured to one of the best setups in Europe at Ajax). Off the top of my head Sydney have both Brillante and O'Neill who are part of their best XI this season, two players around that 22/23 age who are stamping their authority on their sides, and even . So really, the clubs are playing the youth already, even at the top of the table - these players have worked hard to be in these sides and are better players for it - gifting a kid a position just means you end up with a Mariners situation. Kids who are being played simply because they are kids, irrespective of whether they deserve it or not.

+x+xFFA should instead enforce an U23 Australian player in every starting team to help build the new gen. Funny enough China just made that exact change. China just started implementing this so it's harsh to judge how fielding an U23 local player is going to hurt them. Nobody said anything about gifting a player a spot. Coaches should have ideally 4 or 5 U23 players available capable of playing in the first team. If one isn't performing well in comes the one that is. It's called competition and it gives exposure to a group of kids that helps them develop. Last round there may have been young players in most teams but who to say the following week there are only 2 or 3 in the whole league. Not really helpful for our next gen of Socceroos which lets be honest need every bit of help they can at the moment. Even less so if an third rate Asian player is taking their potential spot

Nothing wrong with it. Stop having a whinge. I can't see that there will be many Asians though as they can earn a lot more in the other nations with the +1 rule.

This rant is absurd it's the correct decision
Doing well in the all is at the moment the best exposure to quality football a young player can get

I am really surprised the pissants just accepted all that shit!
Is their no dignity in pissant Adelaide? If this happened at WSW, or MVFC or Perth Glory, there would be boycotts and 60 minute walkouts from the Active Poznans!
And to top it all off, the pissants are making excuses for him. You got to laugh really!
Can't keep the power on and can't play Football. Pissant mentality for a pissant town with a pissant team with pissant active support.
And that megaphone! Ugh! Cringe-worthy!

And, if they lose 2 more games which they will, it's going to flare up again.
The Melbourne City game was a fluke.

I don't think we should have a +1 quota for an Asian player. Clubs should be able to decide for themselves what is the right mix for their club. If they choose 5 player from Europe or from Sth America or a mix, it shouldn't matter. I am just surprised that clubs don't look into our confederation a little more anyway, plenty of players at different levels, so you cant just say Asian players are more expensive or not good value relative to their skill set. It all depends on where you look and how you go about it. Even so, we still should be seeing more Asian players in the A-league regardless, currently there are only two. If clubs choose not to go for Asian players so be it, I just want clubs to choose the best players for their clubs. It shouldn't be something forced onto the A-league.

+xi'm skeptical as to how much the AFC really wants this rule I think this is being driven by the FFA rather than the AFC. The AFC only has that rule in place for the ACL and its only a 3+1 rule.

What are the benefits ? i dont get it. I think we should be moving away from the +1 Afc rule across the board

I think FFA is being pushed to move to that direction. However, for us the +1 is pointless, 300k asian player <<<<<<< 300k european or south american even an aussie. I think only really Adann was a decent under cap asian player. Unless you can get an "asian" player like van dike back in the day, the rest where pretty mediocre.

The least boring bits
ADELAIDE United is set to lure Chinese players to SA including one to fill a potential foreign A-League marquee spot as it deals with sister club Qingdao Red Lions says Reds football director Aurelio Vidmar. Shengqing Qu, a former Chinese international, was the club’s only Chinese marquee player from 2006 until 2007. . . .
“We’ll see if they’re (Chinese players) at a level, long term,’’ Vidmar said. “There is a relationship between us and China (Qingdao) potentially with the five foreigners rule there may be an opportunity for a Chinese player to come and play in one of those slots for the future, we don’t know but that’s global football. . . . “Our thinking is we bring a couple of the Chinese potentials here, if they’re OK we can also help the local clubs NPL clubs, state league 1 and 2, it’s an avenue they want to look at,’’ Vidmar said. “Then we could send our players to China, to play at tournaments and in their competitions as well.” Qingdao is aiming to become part of Chinese professional football pyramid and is currently in a promotional play off for a League two place after playing in the Chinese Football Association Amateur League.

I remember when Brisbane signed "the Chinese David Beckham" - Zhang Yuning. Brisbane went about trying to hype him up, but he fail to live up to that hype, nor did he make much of an impression both on and off the field. That was in the time before the Chinese clubs started spending crazy monies on transfer fees and salaries. How A-League clubs can compete with the money from both China and the Middle East, I don't know.

+xThis bloke running football is going to be a laugh. I can foresee him driving it into the ground. Griffin does not own Adelaide United anymore and is only staying on in his role with the clubs group at their request till November(?). Gaz likes to put news articles he deems unworthy of new threads into 2-10 year old posts because he has nothing better to do

Mark, Who said he is running football? What do you mean? FFA or an independent league? As far as I can see he is a sniper and that's all he is used for.
