We’ve overtaken Korea in the FIFA rankings thanks to our recent winning spree.

https://www.the-afc.com/competitions/afc-asian-cup/news/asia-world-cup-qualifying-what-s-next

Obviously doesn’t change our Pot allocation, but still nice to see progress.

I'm astonished!

I'm not sure where Korea played their WCQ games in the last round robin?

Maybe they struggle  to play in extreme heat and bumpy pitches more than us? They are usually one of  the best teams in Asia.

Adam Peacock said on the Fox podcast that Australia should consider hosting home qualifiers in the UK. That would be so good and is a real novelty. Fat chance the AFC will grant this but it's probably against the rules hosting qualifiers outside the confederation. Craven Cottage was suggested then Dodd said Stoke.

I would actually prefer NZ if we are not playing it at home. Although not sure the NZ gov would agree.

I expect they got fewer ranking points as they had fewer games due to North Korea's withdrawal.

They won Group H with five wins, one draw (Lebanon away), and zero losses.

They were at home in South Korea for their hub.

Excuse my ignorance but I saw the Australian Rugby Union team play France in Melbourne this week - how did the French team get approval to visit Australia for a game?

MCG and AAMI park outbreaks make Australia hosting our WCQ's less likely but if the french team could visit for a friendly surely China can visit us for a WCQ in September

anyone got thoughts on Rhys Williams? only 33 which isn't the oldest for a defender... very experienced looks like he has had a good season last year 28 games, 3 assists. I dont think he gets into the starting 11 but does have some versatility and a lot of experience. He's had major injury issues in the past I was surprised to hear he was still playing. I just think he would great for the group as a whole.

This! Football calendars are so packed no foreign teams could do what the French rugby team did. The power of clubs is too much.

Just says FA are in ‘advanced talks’ with federal government for Socceroos/opposition players from overseas - to be excluded from 14 day quarantine to play WCQ’s in Australia, within a strict quarantine bubble 🤞

Socceroos seek quarantine exemption to host World Cup qualifiers
By Dominic Bossi
July 15, 2021 — 11.31am

Football Australia is in advanced talks with the federal government to fast-track exemptions that would allow Socceroos World Cup qualifiers to be the first international sports events hosted here without quarantine since the pandemic began.

Australia’s second stage of qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar begin at home on September 2 against China but the FA needs the federal government to waive the mandatory 14-day quarantine for arrivals for the game to go ahead.

To avoid the Socceroos playing home games at neutral venues, FA is seeking an arrangement for both teams to train and stay in bubbles. There will also be safety measures to prevent players coming into contact with the public before, during and after games. That includes the possibility of seating arrangements for fans to remain a safe distance away from the sideline, benches and tunnel.

The Socceroos have one of the most dominant home records of any country in World Cup qualifiers, having lost just once in Australia since joining the Asian Football Confederation in 2006. That defeat was with a second string squad in a dead rubber against China in 2007. Playing at home would be a major boost to their chances of reaching the next World Cup but FA sources suggested they had looked at contingency plans if they were forced to play at neutral venues.

“The implementation of robust quarantine bubble arrangements that protect the health of teams, officials and the wider community will be absolutely central to our planning and discussions with government,” an FA spokesman said.

“Football Australia will make a further announcement about host city and stadium selections for matches against China in September, Oman in October and Saudi Arabia in November in due course.”

London has previously been used as a home for the Socceroos for friendlies but won’t likely be approved by the AFC as it is located outside the region, meaning Australia may have to play in countries such as UAE, Singapore, Malaysia or Hong Kong.

The federal government’s decision to reduce the cap on commercial international flights arriving in Australia doesn’t appear to pose a logistical problem for the Socceroos. They will have to undertake frequent travel to China, Oman, Vietnam, Japan and the UAE for their next round of qualifiers but have arrangements with airlines that could alleviate concerns and high costs.

The same can’t be said for A-League clubs recruiting foreign players and Australians based abroad. The soaring airfare costs as a result of the flight cap could prompt clubs to rethink their recruitment of players, potentially prioritising foreign stars without large families. Senior A-League sources informed The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age clubs were concerned the high airfare prices could effect the quality of foreign recruits. The new season is flagged to start on the last weekend of October or the first week of November.

Meanwhile, the Matildas lost 1-0 to Japan in a friendly match in preparation for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. A handball by defender Alanna Kennedy gave away a second-half penalty to Japan, converted by Mana Iwabuchi, which was all that split the two teams. The result keeps the Matildas winless in all five games under new coach Tony Gustavsson.

Probably the only good reason to play in an oval stadium ever.

I was getting a bit hopeful but I think events of this week make it almost zero:
Delta spreading at a number of sporting events - I very much doubt we will have crowds in melb or sydney for a while.
Katie Hopkins issue has raised issue of foreigners jumping queue in front of Aussies
NSW govt seemed to be main driver of wanting WCQ here and I'd say that will drop that idea now, I cant see any other state govt taking it on, they are all paranoid as hell now.

Also a lot of the countries we are facing are having massive spread and I cant see that changing for a while. So there will be a lot more travel restrictions in place for those countries, they'll have to go the hub route. Sadly I see it being either China or Middle East.

I hate to be a debbie downer because I really wanted the hope of seeing Aussies playing here not only because I love seeing them play here but because I know how important home games are for us having a chance to qualify. Maybe in the summer it might change. FUCK COVID

Probably the other 3 GKs that were called up last time, as the September window will likely be a regular sized squad instead of the extended one with 4 GKs.

Can Trent Sainsbury play in central defensive midfield?

Having him there with a Thomas Deng/Harry Souttar central defensive pairing might be quite handy.

most definitely. Played there in when he was in switzerland for 6 months and played well from all reports - was made captain anyway.

UAE, Qatar and South East Asia being mentioned.

Arnie apparently in the ME preparing now.

The squad usually is announced 7-10 days before the first match, so in about 2 weeks time,

This was a bit of fun, How many of the Socceroos' FIFA World Cup Qualifier opponents can you name in five minutes?

I got 92% or 34/37, they got me on a technicality on one.

Vietnam is on England's amber list, so any vaccinated players based there can return without quarantine. UAE and Qatar will be added to the amber list tomorrow. Scotland's list seems to be identical.

None of Vietnam, UAE or Qatar are on Germany's high risk list, so it seems players based there can return without quarantine or iso as well.
