David Davutovic, Herald Sun RISING Australian football star Ajdin Hrustić is locked in a tug of war for his international services. The Dutch-based attacking dynamo is firmly on the Socceroos radar, but Hrustic is also being courted by Bosnia and Herzegovina, the place of his father’s birth. Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou will name a preliminary 30-man squad next week (May 22) for June’s series of matches, and it’s believed that Hrustić is in contention. But Bosnian Under 21 coach Vinko Marinovic has also been in contact with Hrustic’s representatives for months and wants to include him in their next camp, which also includes games in June. DANDY BOY DEBUTS IN EUROPE
HRUSTIC OPENS ACCOUNT IN STYLE Postecoglou has watched Hrustić, 20, closely in his impressive debut senior season, which was capped off with another 25-minute outing for FC Groningen in a 5-3 win at FC Twente. Hrustic, who’s played five games this season, is likely to feature in Groningen’s two legged playoff against AZ Alkmaar for a Europa League spot, starting Thursday. Born and bred in Dandenong, Hrustic played his juniors for Heatherton United, Sandringham and South Melbourne before moving to Europe as a teenager. Hrustić, a left-footer who can play in the number seven (right-wing), 10 (behind the strikers) or 11 (left-wing) role, is the kind of x-factor player Australia produces far less than it once did. His individual brilliance was on display last month with a stunning debut goal for Groningen, a first-time strike from outside the box. Hrustić was part of the Australian development camp in March and Olyroos coach Josep Gombau, who is also a Socceroos assistant, labelled him a standout. Postecoglou is likely to pluck a few surprises in his extended squad, which will be trimmed to 23 on May 31 ahead of a crucial month. The Socceroos host Saudi Arabia in a must-win clash at Adelaide Oval, before facing Brazil at the MCG on June 13, the day before they depart for the Confederations Cup in Russia. There they are guaranteed three high-quality games, against Germany, Chile and Cameroon, with a semi-final spot up for grabs if they finish in the top two. The Socceroos’ World Cup fate will be decided later in the year, when they face Japan (August, away) and Thailand (September, home). Saudi Arabia and Japan occupy the top two spots which guarantee automatic qualification for Russia 2018, while third spot means a dreaded playoff route via the other Asian group then North America (CONCACAF). http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/football/socceroos-boss-ange-postecoglou-fighting-for-young-gun-ajdin-hrustics-services/news-story/2ac577bf9832e2f753b7d7f892f3609e

This is like the Welsh guy. Its not that hard a sell imo "do you want to play in WCs if you are good enough to make the team?"
Europe will only get 3 more spots in the future so Bosnia and Wales will still have to fight to get there. We have a much easier path.

Far out, you would think people would want to be play for that nation they were born in, grew up in and nurtured them in. Massive let down if he decides to play in Bosnia....

Gombou has labelled him a standout and he attended the olyroos camp so going by that it seems to be a bit more convincing that he would choose to play for Aus. Its a privledge to play for Australia

We wouldn't mind fresh new talent in the attacking third, especially on the wings.

I think he will choose Aus if he is already being spoken to. He has less competition for a spot and will likely play in every world cup The welsh guy i completely understand. He wouldn't even remember Australia

the "experts" are slowly catching up.... We have more than enough central midfielders to let Rogic play up front. I'd be keen to see how he partners with Maclaren.

Rogic lacks speed to play up front, he's better off as a false No.9 as a second striker /trequartista in Ange's system.
Also, Ange has tried him as a No.8 in the 4-3-3 but also has made him ineffective.

Lets make our midfield very strong and press from the front.

Squad has been announced fro the Saudi Arabia and Brazil matches as well as the Confederations Cup: Mustafa AMINI Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF), DENMARK Aziz BEHICH Bursaspor, TURKEY Mark BIRIGHITTI (gk) Swansea City AFC, ENGLAND Tim CAHILL Melbourne City FC, AUSTRALIA Milos DEGENEK Yokohama F Marinos, JAPAN Alex GERSBACH Rosenborg BK, NORWAY Craig GOODWIN FC Sparta Rotterdam, NETHERLANDS Rhyan GRANT Sydney FC, AUSTRALIA Ajdin HRUSTIC FC Groningen, NETHERLANDS Jackson IRVINE Burton Albion FC, ENGLAND Mile JEDINAK Aston Villa FC, ENGLAND James JEGGO SK Sturm Graz, AUSTRIA Tomi JURIC FC Luzern, SWITZERLAND Robbie KRUSE Uncontracted Mitchell LANGERAK (gk) VfB Stuttgart FC, GERMANY Mathew LECKIE FC Ingolstadt 04, GERMANY Massimo LUONGO Queens Park Rangers FC, ENGLAND Jamie MACLAREN SV Darmstadt 98, GERMANY Dylan McGOWAN FC Pacos de Ferreira, PORTUGAL Ryan McGOWAN Guizhou Zhicheng, CHINA Riley McGREE Adelaide United FC, AUSTRALIA Mark MILLIGAN Baniyas FC, UAE Aaron MOOY Huddersfield Town AFC, ENGLAND Tom ROGIC Celtic FC, SCOTLAND Mathew RYAN (gk) KRC Genk, BELGIUM Trent SAINSBURY FC Internazionale Milano, ITALY Brad SMITH AFC Bournemouth, ENGLAND James TROISI Melbourne Victory FC, AUSTRALIA Daniel VUKOVIC (gk) Sydney FC, AUSTRALIA Bailey WRIGHT Bristol City FC, ENGLAND http://www.socceroos.com.au/article/ange-postecoglou-names-30-man-caltex-socceroos-squad-for-june-clashes/s60nhq4kxbsc1un2rziw4crqz--- No real bolters apart from Hrustic, who I doubt will be in the final squad but it is good for Ange to have a good look at him. Kruse shouldn't be anywhere near this squad.

Wilkinson is surely ripped off again. And Birighitti is a name I feel like i havent heard in ages. So with that the most in form squad would probably be Langerak D.McGowan Jedinak Wright Leckie-Irvine-Luongo-Gersbach Mooy-Rogic JuricContentious spots being in the CBs. We really are weak there. And LB is probably a toss up between Gersbach and Goodwin. That said, I doubt Ange will go for this side.

+xStill no Jones even in a 30 man squad lol.. Only explanation I can think of is that he's retired from international football, which is fair enough. Otherwise yeah, very strange - deserves to be there ahead of Birighitti and arguably even Vukovic (simply by virtue of playing at a higher level).

Solid squad, no real surprises but a few preferences that might be against the grain.
Jurman and Wilkinson could feel ripped off that Degenek was chosen again and then maybe Brillante or O'Neill that Jeggo gained a place just because he is playing in Europe, as opposed to dominating the A-league.
I can only think that Jones said no, rather than Ange choosing Birighetti over him. Surely.

Surprised either Brillante or O'Neill didn't get in considering when you go to a back 3 you really need a DM who can work their ass off in the middle of the field and they fit the bill perfectly. I've been saying for a while that it seems Jones isn't interested in international football, although neither side has said anything about it as far as I know. He'd obviously be ahead of Birighitti with what he's done in Holland and, considering the season is over, it wouldn't even conflict with club football.

Behich in the squad again, what a fucking joke. Surprised at both McGowan brothers have made the squad, Wilkinson should be in the squad ahead of one of them. I guess both will miss out on the final 23. Birighitti ahead of Jones seems very strange unless Jones doesn't want to be selected.
Players who should miss out are, Behich, Grant, McGowan x2, Hrustic (we are playing a formation without wingers), Birighitti and Kruse. That leaves, GK: Ryan, Langerak, Vukovic CB: Sainsbury, Wright, Degenek, Jedinak, Milligan RWB: Leckie LWB: Smith, Gersbach, Goodwin Midfielders: Luongo, Mooy, Rogic, Irvine, Troisi, Amini, Jeggo, McGree Strikers: Juric, Cahill, Maclaren
There are too many midfielders but they are better players than the players left out.
