Why tho? It's not a finals match so FFA can't even take in any $$

.
.
.
.
Griffin claims an agreement between Adelaide Oval’s Stadium Management Authority and Football Federation Australia forced the Reds to play its round one clash against arch rival Melbourne Victory which ended in a scoreless draw.

Many Adelaide United’s fans reacted with venom to the club hosting its match at Adelaide Oval.

The club’s official Facebook page was hammered by a plethora of angry fans who pleaded for the club never to play a Reds match at Adelaide Oval again.

Griffin acknowledged the fans angst but believes the timing of the Reds opening match of the season probably cost the club a decent sized crowd and a hefty profit.

DRAW: Reds blow chance to end Victory hoodoo

Plenty of empty seats at Adelaide Oval as the teams walked out on Friday night.

“We don’t pick these venues we didn’t pick this game on this date,’’ Griffin said.

“The venue and the date were allocated by the FFA.

“We had no say in it, we’d like to be very heavily involved if we’re doing it again and say look “we think it should be round three or round four.

“People know the A-League is on and you’ve kicked the cobwebs out, it’s simply too big a blockbuster during the first week.

“The FFA have their own separate agreement with Adelaide Oval, which is negotiated without us. There’s a contract between Adelaide Oval the SMA and FFA which we’re not a party to.

“It’s our profit and our risk.

“There are two agreements, there was an agreement months and months ago between FFA and SMA and on Wednesday I was asked to sign a match day agreement with SMA.

“I signed it at 6.30pm on the pitch on Friday night.”

I haven't heard one A-league club say they want Griffin to represent them.

So why is he the clubs representative then?

The A-league  clubs really need to stop letting this guy represent them, he has absolutely no idea.

I haven't heard one A-league club say they want Griffin to represent them.
If this achieves the aim of bringing the rent down on Hindmarsh then job well done.

must be some plan to try and get a better deal at hindmarsh. it might also explain why they are playing us at Adelaide Oval again (after we thought that little era was over).

They already have one of the best boutique stadiums in Australia which holds 16,500. Norwood Oval holds 22k which is higher, outdated and an oval AFL field. Not sure why you are confused.

Morning coffee hasnt kicked in and I was thinking of Adelaide oval as Adelaides home.

That said any move to a stadium that is both "boutique" and costing the club less is a good move as long as its still a good place to view football.

It's an outdated Oval and they wouldn't have full control of the venue.
That's where the issue stands.

If they had full reigns to rectangularise it (ala Perth Oval) they it could be a great opportunity but its simply being toyed as a bargaining tool to try and get a better deal at Hindmarsh.

Ah fair thats pretty unfortunate as the idea of Adelaide playing in a 20k stadium thats far cheaper than Hindmarsh, even if not owned by the club, sounded a great idea.

It's long been a dream of mine for Norwood oval to be redeveloped (like NIB but with a players tunnel that fits people in it) and for United to play there as it's my neck of the woods. I am a 2 minute walk from there as I type this.

Having said that, it's a nothing article and is word for word one that was published a few years ago..
Wouldn't mind the womens team moving to Marden (or Norwood) though as I would probably get to a few games.

That 1958 to 1964 period was the golden age of the game.

Why?  Australia was banned from international competition by FIFA for five years during that period.

A more likely golden era for state league soccer was 1963 to 1976- when the Federation administration took over from the old Association, improved the running of the game; the tours of big name overseas clubs boosted interest; and Australia first qualified for the world cup finals.

When the NSL started in 1977, the state leagues suffered a set back because they lost their star players and big crowds.

Adelaide City played there a few times, the most memorable was beating Marconi 4-0 in the second leg of the finals.
It is what it is - a ground for Mangroek  that's antiquated, has shitty stands and wooden benches to sit on and the surface is bumpy and regularly cut up. The state team played Everton there 50 or so years ago, - I'm sure we've moved on from that, our National team gets paid now!

I agree.... I'm just pointing out that SANFL hasn't always had a monopoly on the use of Norwood Oval. Baseball was well established there at  one point as well as our football.

Hellas' record attendance for a regular season match is 23,000 set in 1962.

If you adjust for population, it shows what a golden age that period was.

So if you adjust for population, when was AFL's golden period?

Summer Cup soccer tournament was played regularly at Norwood throughout the 1950's.

12,108 is a decent crowd, and a record TV audience to boot.

Would give up on the league if this happened.

It's a shithole and Griffen's playing with fire. The spectators are pissed off with the non-action of signing players and some are already saying that they're sick of this shit and are going to pull the plug on membership, if the state government calls Griffen's bluff AU won't exist because they'll only have about 2,000 that'll bother going to watch on an antiquated oval with crap seats.

According to the article, an AFL Women's game was played there and over 12,000 turned up, so at a guess, I'd say yes (strictly speaking, it's a SANFL and AFLW ground).
