I think O'Neill's model was a stepping stone. He was simply laying the foundation

It worked for its time and worked well. Anybody who could remember football in 2004 would never have thought we would see 50k attend a regular H/A game 2 years later

The problem is the FFA never progressed and O'Neill was never around long enough to progress it in the direction he would have

IMO O'Neill is the only adaptable sports administrator the game has seen since the FFA took over. Everybody else is a one trick pony with a DIY AFL kit

Agree and he left because he wanted to take the -League in a new direction and Frank said no... JON said after a year we need a team in Western Sydney at the time Frank owned SFC and had a five year licence but JON said we need to tear that up and he strongly suggested another team in South East Melbourne ... at the time MV also had a 5 year right to Melbourne.

From what I am told from a very reliable source, JON put the plans to Frank Lowy especially the second Sydney team.... Frank rejected it outright.

JON is said to have said to Frank if I am CEO I should decide on matters like new teams... Frank replied it was the board who would decide such things... JON shook Franks hand and said we have a totally different opinion on what the role of a CEO is thanked Frank for what he had done for him and resigned ...

The problem with both BB and DG is they are managers to carry out the boards instructions and the FFA board is very hands on ...

But as you say, there were five year exclusion deals in place.

You know its decent when the commentators blurt out the crowd figure during the game. Unfortunataly this only seems to happen barely once a week or fortnight now. No crowd figure given for Perth game and you will be battling to get the phoenix attendance tomorrow.

Imo should either reveal all of them on the broadcast or none at all.

Considering Perth's form that isn't too bad. As expected good numbers for Jets and Mariners. Phoenix will not get a decent crowd until they start becoming competitive why can people not understand that your form will have a huge impact on attendances? I thought this was a given when trying to build a loyal fan base. If the Phoenix core support is 4,000 to 6,000 then it is still bigger than any NSL regular attendance.

A dead semi pro league that lived on life support for most of its existence. Such lofty standards to aspire to...

They are every year. Kids are bored and on holidays. They also lead in the period with each of the derbies

But comparatively they are still down on last year

Are you really trying to find evidence that things have improved this season?

People don't replace a working light globe. If you find yourself sitting in the dark and the switch is on, step 1 is usually admitting the light globe is broken

Pretty impressive psychic powers to be able to tell how many people are in a stadium just from seeing half of it on TV.

How do you know? Psychic abilities? Looks like about 5k on this side anyway, you know what 2k looks like right? Take a South Melbourne crowd and times it by 4.

Wellington not announcing crowds anymore. Wankers.

Stuff.co.nz said no official crowd but gives the all time lowest of 3898 "a shake"

I get the impression some people circle the league looking for any bad news because they are desperate to be right. Whatever they think they are doing to prove themselves right is a waste of time as it will not change anything.  The Phoenix are in the position they are in because of performance, they lose and they have been losing for a long time. I do believe if they go on a winning streak the crowds will correct themselves.

Its good there not as we don't need knuts like you running the Nixs down. Plus makes it easier to meet metrics.

Why bother with expansion and a second division if it is only going to mean more <5k crowds?

Why bother with expansion and a second division if it is only going to mean more <5k crowds?

a. Correct - Expansion wont make any difference to anything. No-one cares if theres 1 more irrelevant game every weekend

b. 2nd Division means Full Pyramid. Instantly linking the whole game together instead of a boring private round-robin.

c. Who decides what an acceptable crowd size is ? Or more to the point, why is that a focus?

Fix the system first. Whatever the resulting 'level of interest' will at least be real.
