Now that we know the VAR will be used at the WC, at least we can finalise our new strip - Sky Blue

First up I hate the use of the VAR. However, if it is to be used, it needs to be used by viewing all angles once only at normal speed. No repeated replays, no slow motion, no frame-by-frame. If these techniques are the ones used to make a decision then it is not a 'clear and obvious error'

I think I could make a very good argument that a slow motion replay is not in fact reality, but an augmented version of it , therefore no conclusions should be drawn from it.

A clear and obvious error should be something that can be made within the first 10-15 seconds. Otherwise just play on...

MLS has had VAR controversy now. I thought it was only in Australia because the officials are spuds. But all countries "trialing" it have had problems.

The most common thing are the grey areas, hence why it should only be used for goal-line and off-ball incidents

This is by far the worst. Ref misses pen, team takes the ball to the other end and scores. Then VAR intervenes, strips the goal and awards the penalty.

Was only a matter of time before something like that happened.

Even though I think it should be scrapped that could have easily been reviewed as the ball was travelling down the field by the bloke in the box and a then relayed to the centre ref.  Then he could have blown it up before they scored their goal.

Farce.  Mind you if that was an Aussie tripped in the box by a Frenchy I think we'd look at it differently.

That's 2 weeks in a row Wellington have been denied clear penalties with the VAR refusing to intervene. The blokes in the bunker are worse that the referees seeing they have video replays and can't call a clear cut pen even if it bit them on the a$$e.

It was a clear penalty to me sitting in the stands, even clearer on one view of the replay on the big screen. How the referee missed it is mind blogging, how the VAR did not give is beyond ridiculous.

Also I missed the Feyenoord - Vitesse controversy. The main I issue I have with this one is how can a referee not give a penalty for that tackle? It is a massive inexcusable error from the referee and the VAR fixed it, just unfortunately another goal was scored in betweem. Still better than all the mistakes the VAR are making in the A-league.

@ ifimust

I can let the referee off with that one, fairly chaotic and plenty of bodies around so there’s a chance he might have missed it. It’s one of those where s/he should be able to think “I’m not sure, I’ll let that go through to the VAR” ... how the friggin VAR didn’t pick it up god only knows, and the suits eonder why supporters are anti-VAR lol

Fair enough, from where I was in the stands I had a great view of it, but perhaps the referee's view was blocked from where he was standing. It was a clear penalty from the moment I and guy I was sitting next to saw it. We certainly got away with one.

So it’s been a week of people having to front press conferences to apologise for their actions. About time we get the VAR ref answering a few questions at a press conference. I’ll go first:
“What game were you watching?”

Why did that take so long, then?

I am certain that's not what they were originally looking at given the penalty, but they use them to re-refferee games here so they just went with it.

I had no problem with VAR last night. Like everyone, I was initially annoyed with the delay, but it turned out there was a very good reason. First they checked the penalty and then saw the stomp. It would have taken a couple of minutes to study the replays and decide on a punishment. I'm fine with that. They could speed up the process, but I think the incident clearly showed the usefulness of  the technology. Right decision was made solely because of VAR.

There were about 4 body clashes in the box that would each have been reviewed to see whether they were fouls.  If any of them occurred before the Thwaite foul then that is what would have been called and Thwaites red card would have been annulled.

The stomping red card was a separate review that had to be completed before the penalty was taken.

Just watched the England v Italy friendly where the ref overturned a corner and made it a penalty. The whole process took a couple of minutes as the refs tried to work out if there had been any trip on a guy already falling. I doubt they knew as a trip seemed unseeable to me, and as I said the attacker was already falling before any foot was tapped.
It's the time and flow interruption that's really annoying and is fucking the game up for no reason

Does the ref have 4 sets of eyes? no. so any error isn't obvious on the part of the ref. let this shit go and play the game like we have for over 100 years.
