Australian soccer needs a big overhaul, skill levels have dropped and the game admin seems worse than league.

I don't watch A league anymore, the standards are too low, I rarely watch Big Bash.
I think BBL is fine as background when on a date, getting drunk, watching YouTube or posting on social media and IMO that is probably how the majoity use it,

Bottom line inspite of the years of poor admin, league on the field gets better each year, for enertaining TV viewing, it is hard to beat.

I know Dman has been pitching to Foxsports network executives (for close to 20yrs now) for a brand new all year round sport he’s come up with.

I didn't  watch a lot of BBL this year. The lack of leading Australian players, overseas players coming, then being called back etc. The whole thing bordered on farce. They need to do something about scheduling, which will inevitably mean shortening it to allow better quality players to be consistently available.

I think the format allows for all levels of skill so it didnt matter too much who was playing as long as it was competitive.

I actually enjoyed the fact that it was less of a smash-athon and pitches were tailored more for bowlers.

Teams actually had to pace themselves and ensure they played out the 20 overs rather than just smash everything but lose wickets by the 15th over....

Fox is trying to attract / retain viewers and stay relevant.

Netflix and other streaming services are taking market share.

Sport is a low effort way of making unique content for a rusted on audience.

We can no longer stream games live via the NRL app, Fox needs the NRL mire than the NRL needs Fox.

Not sure on that one.
The money NRL gets is huge from Fox.

They go hand in hand. Neither wants to lose each other. Its just that at the negotiation table, they both want to get the best value deal and it can only happen if the product is marketable - which it is.

Still think it was a farce as a competition and lower levels of skill should be playing grade or park cricket.

West Indian bowler Pollard took 4 wickets in 4 balls to beat the poms in a T20, saw the highlights on YouTube.

I don't like T20, but the only thing better than watching the Poms lose, is watching Parra lose.

I tried so hard to enjoy soccer. But the game is just boring.

Its the problem with any low-scoring sport.
Its just not marketable and boring to anyone that is not a purist.

The game itself has one of the most simplest set of rules and you dont need much in equipment - hence it is the most widely played game in the world.

But to gain traction in a country where it competes against the 2 mainstream and high-scoring sports in league and AFL, it has no chance. Especially when the ideology switches to defence rather full blown attack.

I have always felt soccer needs to break its shackles. It needs scores of 12-6 to become exciting and appeal to people and broadcasters.

I have always felt soccer needs to break its shackles. It needs scores of 12-6 to become exciting and appeal to people and broadcasters.

It is more about whether chances are created, which thay often are. So 2 games can have the same scoreline but be very different.

If they want to increase scoring, make the goals 10 cm higher and 10 cm wider, there are lots of shots that bounce off the frame.

Also maybe tweak off-side slightly so that tight calls go to the attack.

3 players must stay in the opposition half, etc.

Many sports have made similar changes.

Lower scoring sports it is all about the inensity of the play.

A lot of games are good, but like all sports when you get 2 coaches with a negative mindset the gsme can get boring.

Making it slightly easier to score means more good games as once a tesm scores the intensity ofren lifts.

Plenty of high scoring games can be boring.

Ir example cricket is most interesting when the bowlers are on top and batsmen need to decide whether to take risks or try to hang in.

Basketball can go score for score for long periods with ilittle defence.

AFL even awards a point for missing, which is like getting an award for most improved.

10 points for best haircut etc, Villi will be annoyed becuase his team's best haircut was poached.

You are right, but a game with 2 negative coaches can be boring. That is about one game in 5, as anyone who watches the game played by skillful players would know.

About 1 game in 5 of NRL or NFL can be boring for similar reasons.

Australian soccer is hard to watch becuase the players don't have sufficent skill, rule changes would not do much to help that.

What has changed over the years is goal keepers  are taller with longer reach, players are fitter, the ball is much better which marginally helps the attack. Pitches are much better which definitely helps the attack.

This point for missing is like getting a point or two for not being able to get over the line. Fied goal, goal, same criticism  can be levelled. I suppose with football you either get it in the net or you don't.

The other intense low scoring gane is.baseball.

In both games one big play can be the difference between winning and losing.

IMO AFL would a better game if the 1 point for missing was removed and a goal was 1 point.

In league a penalty goal or field goal still needs to be over the bar and between 2 reasonably narrow posts.

But the worst part of AFL is that it sometimes resembles seagulls fighting over a chip.

Everyone likes watching different sports.

Make the goals a metre higher and wider...

My thoughts were that you start with 11 players each and after 30mins, both teams lose a player every 15mins.

By the 75th minute, both teams are down to 7 players (goalkeeper + 6).

If that doesnt make it interesting, nothing will!

Unless you have played football or hockey it is hard to understand how hard it is to score.

Defenders are great at coming fron nowhere and making great last ditch tackles.

Usually you don't have much time to hit a narrow target with s goal keeper in the way.

It can be hard to score a try in league for the same reason, defenders are great at scramble, and cutting down decision making time.

So my preference is for a game where attack and defence have a chance and it takes skill and composure to score points.

Actually they should introduce the basketball rule of you cant pass backwards across the centre line.

It will force the australian game to play forward and while the posession stat will drop, its for the better of the game.

Too many aussie teams (a-league and socceroos) worry about the ppossession stat too much and it clouds their focus of trying to actually WIN the bloody game.

Zef is right they will not change the formula.

But making the goals a bit wider is the easy change, in most games there are at least 2-3 close misses and the ball probably hits the frame at least once.

To get a result, play golden point extra time and take both goal keepers off, I recon if golden point lasts longer than 5 mins, both teams are hopeless and a draw is a fair result.

Being unable to punch or catch the ball is a big limitation, try clearing shots at goal with your head.
