I love the game of AFL but you are certainly right. The women's game (at least at the moment) is pretty average... it will need to lift its quality and scoring to gain traction, otherwise its a borefest.

Surely they can assign players a random 12-digit number?

They must be assigning numbers for the whole tournament independent of team selection.

Just give the player with seniority the number for his position. E.g. DCE 7, Munster 6, Teddy 1, etc. JAC 2.
If Burton isn't the senior 5/8 or centre give him a high number.
If Burto is viewed as a 6, make him 16 or 26.

Why not just have their playing numbers the sane as normal NRL....1-17 

They can wear their seniority number in their training strip just before the game.....or if they really want to....have a small seniority number under their team emblem.

I think that they are trying to make it easier for commentators. with lots of different teams and different line ups.

Or they are like the government and everyone else, just doing it on purpose to annoy Dman.😉
