Good to finally get a win.
We made it harder than it ever should have been and in the end had to rely on a conversion to get over the line, not to mention a couple of back-to-back dubious rulings with Isaako's try and Wilson's try.

IMO Sexy's pass was fair (although contentious) but I think we got lucky with the ref ruling Burton was obstructed. Those can go either way and we finally got them go our way.

For some reason, many players this year making a break are putting boot to ball instead of just drawing the fullback and passing to support. It's not just us, I'm seeing it with other teams too and although it looks more spectacular, I'm not convinced it has a higher success rate.

We should just draw and pass 90% of the time and only kick if the support player points to the posts or something.

Anyway, I was most impressed with the variety of play today. Hope the bye doesn't send us backwards as I'm hoping we can build on this kind of result.

Great to get another win. Shame we blew a few try’s. Should have been a bigger score line.

From what I can see the main reason the players are kicking and not passing after breaks is because of the defence. Normally the player making the break can’t pass directly to the support runner because an opposition defender is close by. It’s certainly happening more often and I think it’s simply because defenders are much better in the current game than years gone by.

With the exception of Thommo and maybe Hughes I don’t know if any of those players listed make us a better Team…

They would have improved reserve grade.

The only change I would consider is replacing Flanno with Skeleton, Allamotti Morrin, Okunbor or Tommo.

If we want coverage in the backs then Skeleton / Allamotti.

I think the bench utility spot is the reason why we might be after Connor Watson or Samon, Taffee can do it, but he may be good enough to be a starter.

I have never seen a swapped ball swing so much or a ball change alter the match for the next 50 0vers.

I would have loved it if Broad end his bowling career with 0-100.

We didn't need one more reason to hate the poms, but I hope that the team uses this series as motivation and we sort them out down the track.

Tommo 32 mins in reserve grade, second game since May 2023.

Good player but we haven't been able to keep him on the paddock.

Will affect his contact negotiations
.
IMO the good option for him is to move back to England, he should have a better run with injuries there.

What you say is true in some instances, but I reckon a significant amount have a simple draw and pass with no other cover defender in sight and yet players are trigger happy....

Sometimes it is simply inexperience, the coaches should stress the value of a pass. If a pass is possible, it is the better option.

Wilson definitely kicked when he should have passed, that was inexperience.

In the lower grades a kick is more effective because fewer defenders will scramble back.

In the NRL a kick gives defenders a chance to get the ball and may go out of play, also more chance of the attacker knocking on, especially in a contest.

Sometimes just taking the tackle or trying to beat it is the best option.

One of my favourite players Steve Readon played Temora reserve grade with his 2 sons.

Jed Readon plays dogs SG Ball.

I agree that almost all the time it is better to take the tackle than to kick and hope.

It would be interesting to see before end of year a first grade team with Tevita Pangai Junior, Luke Thompson, Franklin Pele, Kikau, Preston, Reed Mahoney, Liam Knight, Max King and perhaps Edwards, waddell, or Morrin to make up the 6 forwards and 4 reserves....interesting in we can test the grunt factor. Pele needs to be fitter but moves well and quite lightly for a big bloke. ...Perhaps Sutton or Hughes in there too. Loved RFM as a player but sadly doesn't seem up to it now. The grunt is what we have missed...it needs to be on display once to see what might have been. Flanagan as a bench player is a waste. We could cover all positions without him

I agree but it looks like Tommo needs at least 2 weeks in reserve grade, he has played 2 games since May 2022.

Overall I am surprised that Hughes and Edwards haven't played more games, with the exception of one game where the entire team got flogged both have been good.

Pele also impressive in attack, defence wise I doubt that we can have Pele and TPJ on the field at the same time, but that is good reason to rotate them.

A few weeks back when Presto was out with the flu, Reed and Okunbor played with the flu, we apparently had 15 out of 30 players unavailable for selection.

Guys like Pele and Patolo may have been injured.

I am now getting the impression that after the bye more of the injured players will be back, that is why I think we can have a good end to the season. A guy like RFM should not be an automatic selection when we are at full strength.

Also judging our recruitment and retention.

The one negative so far is losing Averillo.

Preston, Hughes, Pele, Wilson, Sexton, Knight, Taaffe, Salmon, Xeri, Crichton all good signings.

We may sign one or 2 more, but with the signings we are making and the young players we are promoting a few more must be leaving.

I am quite interested I  who we retain and who we let go, I expect 99.9% of that will be sorted by the end of the season. We will give departing players a send off.

Thanks for the efforts guys, once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog.

I thought Pangai was a prop. Now I’m certain he is an edge forward. He simply can’t be trusted to not throw a stupid offload or get a quick play then ball. His defence is also terrible in the middle. At least we can hide him a little on an edge.

My ideal team would have him and Kiks in the back row. Preston at lock with Thompson and King up front. But I would ideally have signed another better prop to start. Ideally Tino or somebody else with his size. Knight is great off the bench and should start next year if we let Thommo go. But the others aren’t good enough for us to compete. We desperately need first class props

Cherry Evans looks worse than Flanno tonight. No line breaks or assists. Very few kick meters or decent kicks at all. Just an absolute rubbish performance. Worse than any halfback this year in this first half.

For some reason, Manly are dying with the ball instead of giving it to Cherry on last....

I'm ok with it though.
I took Roosters with -20.5 start and I'm nearly home.

Pangai is a total liability defending on an edge, if he was playing there it would be a disaster especially with our halves and centres.

I would not move Presto who is a great edge forward, KO, Morrin and Edwards are all great locks, we have too many but Edwards can play other positions.

Hiding a bad defender in the middle is easier as they can get more help. TPJ is a very slow learner, the talent is there but at times his decision making is abysmal.

One reason we have leaked so many points this season is edge defence second row, half, centre, - defence up the middle is also and issue.

In particular, our centres were poor in defence most games, teaming those guys up with TPJ would be a disaster.

I don't think it is just coincidence that Okunbur not being in the team last week saw an improvement in defence. I'd love to see him play well but I don't believe he has it.

Kicks being  back made a big difference.

It isn't easy to defend on an edge in the 2023 dogs side.

Okunbor is better than TPJ in terms of decision making, mobility, work rate, and possibly technique.

When he is tired or out of position Okunbor tends to arm grap, most of the time TPJ doesn't even make the effort, or has already over committed in the wrong direction.

I doubt that we will need to play Okunbor frequently on the edge in 2024. He is one player who could be leaving, but I hope that we retain him, he has potential as a middle, he is faster, more athletic and skilful than most middles, especially when catching high kicks.

Fans don’t always agree on which players we rate.

I expect Gus and CC to move on 1-2 players who I would have kept, they can't do worse than some of our decisions in earlier eras.

JOK is fine as a group tackler but can be a liability if he is one on one.

His presence and size when running up to make a tackle is imposing but like quite afew of our players, he's abit of an arm grabber. Burton is another arm grabber.

It's disappointing to see so many of our players having such bad tackling technique. Hope we address it over the off season.

Preston, Mahoney, Morrin and only a handful of others actually tackle with some chest or shoulder.
