+x+x+xWow. For those didnt watch Cooper Cronk on NRL360 tonight, do yourselves a favour and try to watch a replay. Two main things come to light which I've mentioned here before.... 1) We need to make him a serious offer as first grade coach. I would give him assistant coach next year (if we keep Pay) but then guarantee him the role for 2020. 2) He explains (in explicit detail) how you need to adjust your game tactics due to changing nature of the previous play. This is something I have harped on about for the last few weeks. It's the reason I have been wanting more smart players in our team as I think we dont have any. As I have said many times before, the gap between us and the top teams at the moment is not small like afew people think (HD and couple of others) - its massive. The fix however is quite simple but I'm not sure our current crop of first graders can execute it. Watch the interview. It solves everything. Did he express the desire to be a coach???... I'd say he would be able to make serious coin on TV and as a consultant for several teams... minus the stress of coaching... At his retirement announcement he said "I won't coach". I can coach.... Ill put my hand up

All they have to do is read it.

2 good things we can do before june 30th.
1. Swap RFM for a good dummy half. 2. Sign a prop for st least the 2nd half of the season.
It goes without saying both need to be better than what we have. That might get us a few more wins.

To the end of the season with the desperate Tigers paying most of his salary, 2 year option in the clubs favor, take it or leave it. Maguire and Packer don't get on, they want him gone. Not 100% sure what off field issues he has, has done time for assault... so we need to check that out.

Here is another possible short term hooker option:- https://www.qrl.com.au/players/intrust-super-cup/souths-logan-magpies/manaia-cherrington/Played well in a badly beaten side, came on and tried to make a difference, more of a 14. Good passing and seems to possess an instinct for the game, not sure why his career has stalled. What I am saying is there are more options than we think especially if the main criteria is to be better than Lichaa and Brown.. OK it is good to have a long term option for 2021, but even then we will need a backup.

More importantly, we need our props to learn to move up and down in defence, even if they get tired after 15-20mins. We need our second rowers (who can assist them) to rotate positions in the defence line and need our halves to become aware of fatigue and how to best manage it (kick for touch, long kicks, dont kick before 5th etc) As I have said numerous times. Footy is not like it was in the 80's. It is high paced and you need to operate as efficiently as possible.

Meaney has been a good revelation since been given the chance in our first grade team.
The 3 things however I would like to see him improve on is: A) his injection in the backline, B) support play in the middle of the field C) positioning on the goal line on 5th tackle
This 3rd point I believe has been abutvif an issue when he is involved in the 5th tackle. He tends to stay at marker and struggles to make it to the open side where opposition either kicks to or spreads the ball to.
What he needs to do (or be coached to do) is watch video upon video of the immortal Slater who would make a tackle, roll off immediately and leave his partner as marker while he races to the goalposts or open side to make sure he is able to diffuse the 5th tackle kick or shut down any overlap.
He is truly the best fullback to have played simply because of what he did off the ball and as per evidence above. Tedesco and Tom T also do it but not as good as Billy.
Last 3 games, I have seen Meaney make a 5th tackle 2m from tryline and then stay at marker. Someone needs to work with him to get better at this play.

We need to start games better, it may just be a mental issue, or it could be our starting props.... Starting props need to be big, run hard, bend the line, with the ball .. then tackle hard without the ball .. the first 15-20 minutes can set the tone... EDIT:: The also need to be fit enough to do this for at least 15 mins... that is the combination we might be lacking, size and fitness. Some games this year it was obvious to me that we were over powered up the middle at the start of games, the opposition made good yards, our back rowers had to come in and help in defence. We chewed up a lot of petrol defending in the first 20 minutes and the opposition usually posted 1-2 tries, occasionally we got flogged as a result, more often we fought back... Not every game started like this but seems to me at least 60% of games did. At least 50% of our losses seem to be the result of a bad start in the first 20 mins. If it isn't props then it is the whole team, and there is no quick fix.

Meaney is just a bit young and lacking a bit of confidence/energy to insert himself into the game.. He is mostly doing a good job cleaning up kicks, as he has speed which is vital. When the team is going better, or perhaps is better coached, we will have more energy and focus, players will know their job and where to be on particular plays. Yes he needs to improve but all of the raw ingredients are there.... We also have 1-2 good outside backs/utilities in reserve grade, guys that could cover fullback but also centre/wing... I hope 1-2 of them get promoted to the top 30 and get a chance next year.

If it isn't props then it is the whole team, and there is no quick fix. The problem HD is the attitude and coaching. We have been playing like this for decades. We need to change the way we play, the way we use our bench and the timing of interchanges. Des and Pay think they are smart by playing 16 players for 72mins or having multiple players that can "play" 80mins. Its rubbish coz they are not effective in that time. I'd prefer they get gassed after 20mins and need either an interchange, half time or stoppage in play to get their breath back. I want to see JWH, Fifita, Fonua Blake, Vaughn type players who go hard and go off. I'm not impressed if the players give me 80mins of nothingness.

But the sooner he adds the items i mentioned to his arsenal, the better he will be. The standard of fullback play has been raised so he needs to keep improving himself to get to the top level.

I'm not impressed if the players give me 80mins of nothingness. These kind of players are exactly the type of starting prop I think we need. I'm hoping we are re-balancing the side as follows:- 2 x 80 2nd rowers... 1 lock - capable of 50 mins - also filling in at 2nd row, or prop if needed. 2 x starting props 15-25 minutes - high energy Bench - 2 x impact props 15-25 mins of energy....(or perhaps 40-50 mins of work rate) 1 x bench utility - hooker, halves, centre... 1 x utility forward lock/2nd row. You can think of it as a more traditional style where props are rotated, but 2nd rowers play 80 mins... For my style Tolman, Jackson and Elliott would be a lock or bench utility forward, Tolman might also be a bench prop, sometimes work rate might be more important than impact, e.g. expect an up tempo game. I don't know for sure that this would work, but I want us to go back to being a club that wins the battle in the middle.

Cronk won't be coaching anyone, at least full time. He might take on a very part time halves coach gig here and there but that's about it.
Rupert already has him lined up to fulfill his very, very naked ambition (I mean, you can't tell?) to be the face of Foxsports or bigger (maybe even o/s) for the next 50 years. And I mean FoxSPORTS not just Fox League.
But I think his ambitions are even bigger than what Rupert can fulfill, at least in Oz.
