In all honesty though, I would be very happy if the NRL adopted an allowance to use the shoulder when defending a try scoring play.

Whether it be on the wing or under the posts.

The game is a contact sport. It's not legal to hit a guy on the head, but why should babies be thrown out with the bath water? Why should a legal shoulder to another players torso be penalised.

Car races and motorbike races feature lots of crashes that result in minor or major injuries. You dont see them ban speeding now do you?

I agree. If someone is hit in the head with a shoulder it is a head high tackle and should be dealt with that way. A shoulder to the torso or body shouldn't be penalised. People raving on about shoulder charges going wrong are dangerous - so is a low front on tackle if you get it wrong and your head in the wrong place which happens all the time but they haven't moved to ban that. I am glad Slater got off because it give Melbourne a better chance of beating the Bondi no caps.

Nrlol funny stat.

Can't get Cronulla salary cap drama to stick.
Can't get Brisbane salary cap drama to stick.
Can't police Rosters salary cap.
Can't get to the bottom of who sent Souths nude photos using Sam's phone.

Only thing they can get to stick is Adam Elliott naked dancing and even with that they've lost half of Todd and Peter's  Christmas Party money.

My question is, if the NRLol doesn't believe that the use of the shoulder is punishable in all instances, then why did they bother to address it in the first place. Remember, it is after all a "contact" sport.

Surely after all the bloody fines imposed on us in 2018, the NRL has a great international music act playing at the GF this year?

Who’s playing?

AC DC?
Bon Jovi?
Snoop Dogg?
Justin Timberlake?
Dman with special guest Cher?

I'll certainly be turning off after the ISP mate. Given the teams involved the only potential pleasing outcome would be if a giant, entire playing surface swallowing sinkhole, was to open up underneath the stadium immediately before kick-off.

Dman has a good sense of humour & seems to enjoy the jokes & banter. I'm sure if anyone took it beyond that & started making unreasonable cheap shots & insults that he'd be fully capable of dealing with them himself, but there'd be plenty to step in on his behalf if not.

Anyway, with the clubs policy on not releasing Mason for bit of boxing in mind, not sure they'd be open to releasing their new sprinting coach to gallivant about on stage.
In fact, at the coffee shop this morning I overheard some men in black from the club discussing getting him to jump out of the bushes in Montoya's front garden wearing a flashers cape & holding a bunch of roses...

Even though Slater was found not guilty I'm not sure that that NRL will water down the shoulder charge rule.  In the case of James Ackerman the coroner found that there was no contact to the neck or head, but the force upon the shoulder was enough to rupture an artery in his neck causing death.  Given this and the overwhelming stance against the shoulder charge by the NRL doctors, I don't think the ARL will risk the consequences of an other unfortunate accident.

Its a slippery slope argument...
With all due respect to the deceased,, its not so much about the act for me as it is the way rule changes are decided, written and enforced both on and off the field..

Speaking of bouncers, the main problem with that is they still haven't come up with a better helmet to protect the vulnerable areas around the side of the skull & back of the neck yet. I reckon the fastest way that could happen is to ban all financial transactions associated with the sport until they do. No player wages, no sponsorships, no telecast rights, no advertising. They'd have a fantastic helmet on the shelves within weeks if that was the case. In the meantime it seems like they're just ignoring the problem & hoping it'll disappear.

Well said dman.
I also dont want to sound disrespectful, but the reality is that these serious injuries are a rarity.

In most sports you'll have some freak instances of death. Even the softer sports.

You're not going bv to eliminate it.
Mitigating it is the only way to go about it, but once again it cant be to the detriment of the sport.

People say that banning the shoulder charge didnt kill the game and it survived it, but did it really? The impact is unmeasured. Is the game really REALLY in a better place? I know Zef has his opinions but unfortunately crowd attendances and participation reveal otherwise.

Hmmm... it's tough, agree with some of Markus sentiments re freakbandcrare occurances..
Te the helmet, they do have those little attachments some players are choosing to wear...

Like, where does it stop though?.. let's say (god forbid) a player is killed by a ball to the throats crushing their windpipe, do we then stop payments until a throat protester is mandated?

The thing is, even though the professional dporting field is now considered the workplace, I don't think applying the same standards in what is a body contact sport as the 'normal' workplace is sustainable...

Again how far do we go?... should Cronk have been forced from the field? Should players not be afforded pain killers to get them on the field?...

It's a contact sport, the potential for harm is recognised by all who don the jersey... PC, outrage, and duty of care could potentially kill many sports...

I get sick of people referring to the NFL payouts as an indicator, it's a very different situation as they withheld information

I wonder where boxing, and the worlds fastest growing sport mma for example stand on the DOC stuff.... like if you can't shoulder charge due to legislation, how the hell are those sports even allowed to host an event...

How many balls have been bowled in shield cricket and how many have killed?... workplace legislation re controls for hazards states what is reasonable and practicable based on the outcome of a risk assessment, including likelihood, consequence, and frequency...

DEATHS IN ORGANISED SPORTS IN AUSTRALIA: A CASE SERIES REVIEW OF THE NATIONAL CORONIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
Andrew McIntosh⇓, Lauren Fortington, Declan Patton, Caroline Finch
Author affiliations

Abstract

Background Organised sports include individual water sports and athletic activities, team ball sports, team bat/stick sports and racquet sports. The causes of death, contributing factors and potential to prevent deaths in organised sports are poorly understood.

Objective To understand the causes of death and contributing factors in organised sports in Australia.

Design A case-series analysis was undertaken using the National Coronial Information System (NCIS) in Australia.

Setting Organised sports, including recreational and professional participants.

Patients Cases are ‘closed’ NCIS fatal cases aged 15 to 74 years who died in the period 2000 to 2016 as a result of participating in an organised sport.

Interventions No interventions were assessed.

Main Outcome Measurements These include the cause of death, mechanism of injury, contributing factors, demographic data, and sport participation.

Results There were 913 deaths in organised sports, with 89% being male. The largest group was 45–54 year olds (23%) and the smallest was 65 to 74 year olds (15%). The three sports groups accounting for the highest proportion of deaths were team ball sports (23%), wheeled motor sports (12%) and individual water sports (11%). Within team ball sports there were 98 deaths in organised football (Australian Rules, Rugby Union and Rugby League). Overall, the cause of death was cardiac, e.g. congestive cardiac failure and acute coronary syndrome, in 56% of cases, blunt force trauma in 29% and drowning in 7%. Cardiac deaths increased with age while blunt force trauma deaths reduced with age.

Conclusions There are age related differences in sport participation at time of death and cause of death that need consideration in planning for life long active participation in organised sport. Organised sports are governed by organisations with responsibility for setting player safety standards – informing these organisations of risks is critical for injury prevention, medical emergency policy and planning.

One of the ugliest tackles that still exists in rugby league and still seldom attracts a penalty is when 2 or more players hold up an attacker and another defender tackles his legs.

I cringe everytime I see it.

In most cases, the attacker is blinded while wrestling with the 2 other defenders and I'm surprised we havent seen serious hyperextension injuries.

If I was leader of the NRL, I'd probably ban 5 other tackles before I even looked at the shouldrr charge.
