https://www.fourfourtwo.com.au/news/ffa-vows-to-block-ffa-v20-blueprint-499789

Football Federation Australia has vowed to fight the key changes proposed in the blueprint for a new governance of Australian football.

The Congress Review Working Group report to FIFA was published earlier today and revealed a masterplan to split the A-League away from the FFA in time for the 2019/20 season and to overhaul and expand both Congress and the FFA Board. The FFA has been desperately opposed to significant changes to the status quo, which forced FIFA to get involved and set up the working group to draw up a plan for the future. Now the FFA has come out to oppose key changes proposed in the new structure.FFA chairman Steven Lowy insisted: "There are many elements of the report which are positive steps and wholly supported by the FFA Board."But he then went to produce a lengthy list of items they will be fighting against with FIFA.He added: "There are also some crucial aspects of the report which the FFA Board does not believe are in the best interests of the game and are inconsistent with its guiding principles submitted at the beginning of the processAn FFA media statement spelled out: "Specifically, the independent FFA Board expressed strong concerns over the following key aspects
  • the proposed model excessively weights votes towards “professional” football at the expense of “grassroots” football and effectively would allow the professional game when acting as a block to dictate the election of directors to the FFA Board.
  • the proposed model grants A-League clubs, acting as a block, the ability to veto amendments to the FFA Constitution
  • the proposed model delivers PFA a disproportionately greater voting representation than each Member Federation
  • the Women’s Council appears to extend the voting reach of other stakeholders at the expense of a truly independent voice for the women’s game
  • the proposed model does not sufficiently broaden the membership of FFA at the outset - to this end, the FFA Board was supportive of the immediate admission of special interest groups including AAFC in light of the importance of NPL Clubs in the Australian football ecosystem
  • the proposed pathway to an alternate A-League model is inconsistent with the foundational good governance principle that independent directors should manage the affairs of FFA in accordance with their fiduciary duties in the interests of FFA. The proposed pathway instead blurs the role between Board and Congress decision-making. The FFA Board instead proposed a process which preserves the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder while consulting with all stakeholders throughout the process before a final vote of the Congress on the proposed A-League model."
In a letter to the working party, Lowy wrote: "The directors consider that the current CRWG proposals in relation to the new composition for the FFA Congress and the pathway to an alternative A-League governance model are not in the interests of the game."As such, consistent with their fiduciary duties, the directors would have no option but to recommend against their adoption."

They're really pushing this one in particular;

  • the proposed model excessively weights votes towards “professional” football at the expense of “grassroots” football and effectively would allow the professional game when acting as a block to dictate the election of directors to the FFA Board.

Trying their hardest to make it look like they're 'standing up for the little man', rather than the truth - they're trying to protect their own power.

There has to be a more sinister reason why they are pushing so hard. Are they that stubborn to ruin Aus football?

Me thinks that the Lowys are using FFA for tax write-offs and also using the FFA to send money overseas to their 'mates'

Release your accounting books Steven so I can be proven wrong!

This makes no sense. The reason is obvious; they are in power, they would like to stay in power - especially due to the Lowy legacy - and this would cause them to lose a significant chunk of that power.

So they want their legacy to read
'In 2018, due to their stubborness and greed, the Lowys were the cause of a 12 month ban from FIFA on Australian football. It took x years for the football to recover in the country'

Is it at all instructive that Lowy is using the language "the directors...." in the statement?

Not sure I've heard that language (directors) used in previous releases - as in Australian corporations. Intimating that they will be going down that path to avoid FIFA intervention?

Or am I reading too much into it?

@ Muz

The irony is though Lowy was happy to have a block of State Federations acting the same way. It’s hypocritical of him to complain someone else might do what he and his father have been able to go 😂

The point of voting blocks on any committee though is that no one block should be able to force through change - which this delivers on. The fact the clubs can oppose change to the constitution is not a problem, unless you want to changd the constitution which is a very rare event.

This makes no sense. The reason is obvious; they are in power, they would like to stay in power - especially due to the Lowy legacy - and this would cause them to lose a significant chunk of that power.

Why is that power so precious to them though? Is it purely a Lowy ego thing? The power isn't that special. What can they actually do? Push a 10 team league around? Block NPL clubs from joining the top flight or creating a 2nd div? Pick the NT coach? Tell futsal and the youth league to go away? Pocket some cash from the TV deal? None of those things are actually that important. Every person on that board would make way more money from their other ventures so it can't be a financial thing. Nobody is buying the whole 'what about the grassroots?' thing because the FFA have never cared about grassroots in the past. If the reports are true and they are willing to let Australia be suspended, then it has to be more than just 'power'. There is definitely more to this story.

Hypothetically, if we get suspended before the end of the year, would that mean we can't compete in the Asian Cup?

FFA aren't even stakeholders, yet they are acting as if they are.
They don't uave a vote !
They are there soley at the behest of the congress members.Who tomorrow could unanimously sack the lot.

'The proposed model excessively weights the votes in favour of professional clubs'?....What a load of bs.The federations have a monopoly of 55 votes combined.

Nuclear option is getting closer.....

  • the proposed model grants A-League clubs, acting as a block, the ability to veto amendments to the FFA Constitution
  • the Women’s Council appears to extend the voting reach of other stakeholders at the expense of a truly independent voice for the women’s game

Tend to agree with these 2 though.

the feds will also have that ability on their own Muz. How is that different? if the clubs are unanimously against something (only takes one dissenter to get the 75%) then as the major income generator for the FFA it doesnt seem an unreasonable thing to have that ability. they cant on their own push through change but can stop it. Not sure thats a terrible thing. They can keep saying 'no' but wont get what they want either unless there is negotiation and compromise.

Where are these 10 'independent' women to come from if not from some part of the football pyramid? by definition they must be involved somewhere in the game to care enough to be involved so why not try to balance that as much as possible which I think is the idea - trying to create a microcosm of the larger demographics within the women's council, although not sure if 3 from 'the clubs' is from the W-league only and if thats the case is there too much overlap with the 3 'from the PFA' ie effectively 6 aligned votes with the professionals. Should the 'clubs' be non-pro only? ie not PFA affiliated?

"Regrettably, while naturally needing to see the final outcome of the CWRG process and the exact proposals to be put to a General Meeting"  from the Lowy letter pdf.

WTF?  So the FFA haven't actually seen the report says the quote at the bottom?  Who put this story together?  Meanwhile the opening para:

"The Congress Review Working Group report to FIFA was published earlier today and revealed a masterplan to split the A-League away from the FFA in time for the 2019/20 season and to overhaul and expand both Congress and the FFA Board."

Anyways enough about "journalism".

My only real interest in that wall of words was "the FFA Board was supportive of the immediate admission of special interest groups including AAFC in light of the importance of NPL Clubs in the Australian football ecosystem"

All along we've been told it was the FFA that was objecting to this?  So we can assume now that it was A League Clubs that blocked it?
SMFC you've got to make it in this time or you're completely fucked.  Too bad.
