+x+x8,923 Mariners v Jets (CCM Tweet) I thought it was easily 10k. Must have been pretty empty opposite camera side. Agree crowd looked bigger in Gosford. Very few tickets online for the City / Victory game yet so many empty seats at the City end. This must be embarrassing for the CFG, but then again Manchester City has trouble filling their stadium.

+x+x+x+x+x24306 for the Melbourne Derby. Great crowd probably 20000 of them were Victory fans. I wouldn't consider that number a great crowd These games should be a sellout, particularly on a festive weekend with no BBL on the night 24.5k is a sellout at AAMI lol yep, very difficult to get more at AAMI Dont even think its top 5 for derbies at the venue. A lot of season ticket no shows. City end had lots of empty spots. Second or third lowest A-League season Melbourne Derby, a lot of City members have had enough, it seems. All the green was up their end and their premium areas on the lower level, and when they scored the equaliser there was barely anyone on their feet upstairs.

CFG have seen significant problems with their Global expansion, especially in NYC. It has and was always going to be a monumental failure.

Didn’t do their homework in NY, playing out of a baseball field in the Bronx where most of the population are latinos who only follow baseball (puerto Ricans, Cubans, dominicans etc)
All the wogs in NY are dormant NY Cosmos fans. They will never crack that market now.

Average BBL crowds are reportedly down 45% YoY over the first 8 rounds. Must fold before the A League surely?

Yeh it’s folding, 40,000 right now in Perth and probably 80,000 at the G on New Year’s Day, that’s on top of almost a million nightly viewers on 7 and fox. The only real poor crowd there is the Sydney derby but on Xmas eve it’ was clearly scheduled for tv purposes, games in Canberra and Gold Coast will always draw low. It looks like they get the dud games out of the way before Xmas then go nuts after that, starting tonight by the looks of it.

@southmelb
Farks sake, that went over your head then 😂
BBL crowds are down massively, tv viewing is down significantly also, that’s all there is too it.
Are the cricket websites full of haters and biters talking nonstop shit about falling crowds and viewing?

How is tv viewership down? They are pulling monster ratings on 2 platforms close to a million viewers per night.
Let’s put attendances in perspective, Adelaide United got 8,000 tonight, the winless bbl team got 34,000 a few nights ago and has already sold out its nye match so will be close to 50,000. Table topping Glory get around 8-10k, the bbl team gets 40,000 tonight. If they’re struggling I’d be turning away when they supposedly start doing well.....they only had a hit in attendance because they have schedule games in Canberra, Gold Coast, Geelong...all the matches that are played in the major stadiums are pulling in huge numbers.

@ south Melbourne
Both attendance and viewing figures are reported as down for the BBL. Granted it’s wise to wait another month before drawing conclusions but they are what they are after 8 games.
The actual size of the crowds and viewing figures was not the point. Down is down and may be indicative of a wider trend that may be important.
And there’s a reason it may be important, if a fall in tv viewing and attendance is party of a macro-economic or social trend then the ability of sports to change them is diminished eg expansion, pro-rel, div2 for football may not make any difference. Macro problems are harder to solve and less outside of individual control.
The debate on football viewing figures and attendance cannot take place in isolation, comparisons to other codes can be unhelpful eg comparing cricket attendance/viewing figures of cricket to football is comparing the 100+ year established national sport of Australia with mainstream media support to a code that isn’t 100+ years established, isn’t the national sport and instead is only liked by a few Australians and loved by immigrants and has no media coverage and support, instead the media’s rather hostile to it - of course one will get larger audience than the other!
But knowing what other codes are doing can help understand what’s happening and why.
The AFL appears to be the only code that is immune at the moment - all the other codes seem to have more downs than ups

Perth Scorchers are also playing in the new stadium So you would think this would’ve lifted the ceiling with their crowds compared to the limited Wacca.

Is the underlying trend for AFL also downwards?

You can’t argue that the bbl is getting a boost with the Perth new stadium, only to disregard the fact that they’re playing games in Canberra, Gold Coast and a few other regional areas which is also lowering the figures. When they set those record attendances they weren’t taking games to those venues.

When they set those record attendances they weren’t taking games to those venues. 10 000 to the Sydney derby is a massive drop, with an average of 16 000 for 3 games. It just doesn't reflect a game that is reportedly commanding viewing in the millions. TV ratings in Sydney is also tanking with Melbourne regularly getting twice the numbers and Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth regularly outdrawing it. no doubt there is a TV audience for BBL but there is no chance it will have the committed fan base to be anything more than a cheap, short, holiday event. We need to appreciate the committed fan base that we have, cricket has had decades of FTA viewing for it to become a viewing habit for many Australians, we can't just expect to have that overnight when we are locked away on PayTV.

I’m not sure what sort of crowd you would expect on Christmas Eve. Sydney Sixers got 22,000 last night against Melbourne stars I’d say that’s pretty good. Just remember the bulk of the bbl is played on weeknights as well.

Just remember the bulk of the bbl is played on weeknights as well. In a city of 5 million with TV viewing in the millions, there would have been plenty of people around with time off who could have got to the game if they wanted to. We need to be happy that in Sydney we get similar crowds to the BBL teams but with about 1/20 of the TV viewers and media space.

Not to turn this in to a cricket site but:
“After 10 Matches in the 2018-19 BBL Season attendances are down 20.39% on the first 10 matches of the 2017-18 BBL Season to 197,679 and an average of 19,768. Venue occupancy is down from 61% to 50%.”

As the recession comes into full view, it will be interesting how far the attendances drop across all sports for the coming year.

The tennis seems to grow every year.
The Aust Open is the biggest tennis tournament crowd-wise in the world.

Historically at the SFS would they draw much more than that against the Roar? Probably not much more, the game looks so much better on tv when the stands appear full.
