+x+xWe've reached stage where people need to choose. We've learned from experience that people can't follow the AFL and then pretend to be football fans. wot? I follow an AFL team. Victory and football will always come first though (and I hope its the same for all lovers of football). You can follow both. However, I do concede that the arrogance and the bullying of the AFL is offputting. its certainly makes me gravitate towards football further and further. Trust me, people that follow the AFL as their first sport, but also the A league, who come here, feel exactly the same way about the A league. Being told repeatedly that following an AFL team makes you a racist sexist bogan gives you a strong tendency to tell the whole A league crowd to fuck off. I have always thought it a reason for the relative lack of activity here, its a really off putting site if you also follow other sports, particularly AFL. If the game plan going forward is, for all A league supporters to be A league supporters and nothing but A league supporters, that is a losing strategy.

+xMid, There is a very large football market in Sydney but it's not tied to the NPL clubs and never was. It's tied to the clubs in the District Associations. There is nearly 200k currently playing the game competitively there and allowing for the churn there are another 600k+ that have played the game competitively there at some time over the last 15 years. Work with that market and there will be enough fans for however many elite tiers we have. This has been my argument and belief for decades...

What needs to be considered is the way each football market has developed around the country. You and I understand Sydney and what has happened over the decades but what we see as needed for Sydney may not be relevant in other markets around the country. I think different strategies may be needed around the country to cater for local circumstances.

You illustrate quite a valid point or points, first its not and has never been one size fits all.... and secondly to grow the Football market will need a lot of hard work and planning ... Finally we need lots of people doing lots of things and kinda on the same page and this won't happen until we get vision and leadership that can Command respect not Demand respect.

Just goes to show how deluded people are with their "everybody is streaming the league" banter. Its hard to believe that an estimated triple the normal audience would have set aside the methods they have been using to watch the league all season, and opting for an ad ridden SD coverage instead To add further fuel to the debate, is it any surprise that the highest rating game featured two NSL teams ;)

Would that be the highest non grand final FTA rating since Ten took over the FTA broadcasting? The ratings do raise some big questions over Foxtel. Almost three times more casuals watching FTA ,on a SD channel with no publicity than Diehards watching on Foxtel with endless promotion? i can only conclude a lot of diehards have dropped Foxtel.Where they have gone ,we can only guess. Considering 10 make no money from their coverage and have no incentive to promote Football and the game involved no Syd or Melb teams ,what does it all mean? where have these 100k people come from to watch FTA for one random game?

Those 100k extra viewers know it’s finals and will tune in even to an SD broadcast, these same people will not tune in from October to April where the games ultimately don’t mean anything. Finals aren’t random games.

Didn’t know some deadbeat venting his outrage online had such a responsive audience.

https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/foxtel-signals-price-hike-cuts-to-non-marquee-sports-after-417m-loss-20190513-p51msx.htmlLooks like Foxtel could be in its death throws, massive debt from its deals for AFL, NRL and Cricket, subscribers in freefall, advertisers abandoning it,and price rises in the pipes.

do we know the 10bold numbers? it probably would have been a lot lower than friday night due to it being one sided, but should be higher than the foxtel numbers.

Spot on, and they will achieve this without having to spend any marketing dollars.

Going standalone this season would have played a big part in the subscriber uptake. It's also why I think (and have always thought) that people being exposed to Optus sport has translated into Football fans taking up Kayo - they understand how much better a streaming platform is over broadcast TV after being forced to adopt it for EPL + World Cup PLUS fans of other leagues who have been using Bein's offering for years. AFL/Rugby etc have mobile streaming options but fans haven't been forced to embrace alternative platforms yet, which is why I think numbers for those sports have remained consistent.

Just on the fox loss of 418 million anyone know how much was operational as they and some huge write downs when they merged Foxtel & Fox Sports.

Thats huge and its impossible to think the A-League has not leaked fans to the EPL... essentially Fox to Optus especially with the Champions league now as well.. Wonders aloud if a 10 / Optus broadcast deal is possible and take the Fox / Telstra out...

Wonders aloud if people are serious that TEN, who paid zero dollars last time to take Fox’s feed, and got shit ratings all year, are suddenly going to purchase cameras microphones and all the infrastructure required to broadcast games independent of Fox.

I thought Fox used a contractor to do all the outside broadcast work.

TEN buy the Saturday night game off Fox Sports. And its not whether they will will produce their own vision (they can still take Fox’s feed) it’s whether they’ll overlay their own commentary and produce their own pre/post game show? The fact they they are considering moving from one game broadcast in a secondary channel to two games on their main channel suggests they either see something or are at least hoping for something to happen.
