Industrial action a possibility if Western United fails to pay players on time for fourth successive month
Western United players may consider strike action if the embattled A-League club is late in paying them for a fourth successive month.
Despite the players having been assured by the club they will be paid on Tuesday, this month’s pay day, they are ready to take action – with the backing of Professional Footballers Australia – should the “trust” be broken.
“The club has assured the players that this month’s wages will be paid on time and in full, and we trust that the club will keep its word in this respect,” a PFA spokesman said.“It would be extremely disappointing if this turns out not to be the case and the players are left, once again, to fight for their most basic employment entitlement.
”Such is United’s financial state that players haven’t been paid on time for the past three months, leading to the PFA lodging breach of contract notices with the club.
On each of the three occasions, players and staff were paid within a 14-day deadline given by PFA to pay or run the risk of losing contracted players to other clubs.
However, should wages again be late, the deadline could be limited to just two days, which if not met could lead to not only industrial action but also a demand that sporting sanctions be placed on United.

United announced the signing of ex-Sky Blues attacker Kucharski earlier this month despite knowing that he could not be registered due to an ongoing FIFA ban stemming from a unresolved financial dispute involving the club’s former striker Aleksandar Prijovic.
he ban also applies to left-back Garuccio, as he didn’t re-sign with United until after he had become a free agent, meaning he needs to be re-registered.
As a result, the pair can’t play against the Sydneysiders at Ironbark Fields, and Football Australia is also investigating whether United breached the ban by fielding Kucharski in a friendly game last week against NPL Victoria club Oakleigh Cannons.
The club’s proposed new ownership structure, which was announced in May and involves KAM Melbourne, a subsidiary of American company KAM Sports buying a $100m controlling stake in the club and its parent company Western Melbourne Group, is yet to be approved by the Australian Professional Leagues, which runs the A-League.
The lengthy delay for approval is understood to be because the APL is yet to receive KAM Melbourne’s completed ownership proposal. link

+xShame about the Rebels. Would have been a nice earner for Western in a leasing arrangement. Spoke to an insider at a dinner last night. They have already started renting out the venue for certain things. Had a national gridiron championship there a couple of weekends ago with 1000 people in attendance, and are looking to sign an agreement with school sport Australia to use the ground on an ongoing basis for their high end matches. Its a revenue stream no other club has. It might not move the needle just yet but its a smart play. Sad about Western United

So, WU are rolling the dice on their Appeal and refusing to let anyone leave. I guess paying the wages 2 days early might get some brownie pints at the FA/First Instance Board ? But still being overdue on the Super would've made for a stiff start to proceedings Western United bosses have paid wages early this month and have also shelled out money for overdue superannuation payments as they attempt to prevent players from leaving the embattled Victorian club. . . Player and staff wages were also late on three successive occasions from April to June before being paid on time last month. This month’s pay, due this Friday, is understood have already been paid, and the club is also believed to now be up to date with superannuation money that was owing. As a result, players bidding to leave United cannot use potential breaches of their contract as a way to get out of their deals. It’s understood some players have asked United officials to be released from their contracts but have been refused.

Western United Football Club confirms it has today been granted an extension of time to lodge an appeal of Football Australia’s decision to withdraw its A-League licence.
We’d like to thank our loyal fans, members and partners that have rallied around the Club in the past week.

A multibillion-dollar greenfield development in Melbourne’s west is in limbo after US property investor Maciek Kaminski abandoned plans to take a $100 million controlling stake in the consortium behind the plans. Kaminski’s plan to buy a controlling stake in professional A-League soccer club Western United put him in the box seat to develop a 62-hectare site around the club’s home stadium in Tarneit, but Kaminski said on Wednesday he would no longer proceed with the investment.
Kaminski’s withdrawal could be the death knell for Western United, which faces a wind-up hearing in the Federal Court on Thursday over $800,000 of debt to the Australian Tax Office. Western United had secured a three-week stay of execution in early August on the grounds it needed more time to close its deal with Kaminski’s company KAM Sports. But on Wednesday, KAM founder, Minnesota-based Kaminski and his son Mikhail, who heads the business, told The Australian Financial Review they were cutting the club loose ahead of the court hearing, citing its failure to pay players and the stripping of its licence by Football Australia.
“We’re going to be stepping away from the transaction,” Mikhail Kaminski said. “If they’re not making wages payments on time, they’re not operating the club appropriately. We feel bad for people of Tarneit, the people in this great district, but we can’t sit around forever while we wait for government to tell us whether or not there’s something to buy.” Businessman Jason Sourasis, who holds the majority stake in WMG Holdings which has led the property development-led deal with KAM, and who last week said the club would appeal against the withdrawal of its licence, declined to comment. The failure of the deal to proceed – which would have led to the first privately owned sports stadium in Australia – means there is no financial backer for the team that finished third on this year’s A-League ladder and remains saddled with debts it cannot pay. But it also raises questions about the role of property in underpinning an investment that would have required KAM Sports to build a new 15,000-seat stadium on land promised by Wyndham Council at the club’s Ironbark home in Tarneit. The KAM Sports directors said they had been unable to reach an agreement with the council about how they would develop the land earmarked some 900 homes and new commercial real estate under the deal.
“The Tarneit land is valuable, but when you assess the fact that the Tarneit land basically pays for the stadium that is a requirement to receive the land … it’s really a push,” Maciek Kaminski said. “We were in the process of having the conversation of redoing, or tweaking, if you want to call it, the DA and that has been a process, but they couldn’t get to the spot we needed.” The KAM directors said they hadn’t closed the door on doing a future deal with Western United, but it would need to be done differently, with a different property deal and with their funds going towards developing real estate rather than paying the club’s debts. “We would have an interest in having the conversation with the council and a league about restructuring the whole deal,” Maciek Kaminski said. Wyndham City Council said it remained committed to the idea and would be willing to renegotiate the contract with KAM in good faith. But the council that had to protect its ratepayers and KAM’s demands had become unreasonable, said Mark Rossiter, Wyndham’s head of corporate services.
“It is unfortunate that the potential solution proposed here appears to have turned into not much more than an expensive and time-consuming tyre-kicking exercise,” Rossiter told the Financial Review. “All that’s happened here is for a long time they didn’t meet their commitments. They were largely financial. Not only did they not meet their commitments, they said we’re not going to be able to meet our commitments. One party who signed the contract is saying they can no longer hold up their end of the deal.”

 Western United wound up by ATO after court adjournment refusedThe Federal Court of Australia rejected an extension of time submitted by the club's owners and has found in favour of the Australian Tax Office's (ATO) application to have the football club disbanded in addition to several other insolvent companies. Western Melbourne Group (WMG) Holdings had previously successfully requested an extension of time for the purposes of finding a new financial backer for the club after US property developer Maciek Kaminski withdrew from his plans to buy a $100m controlling stake in the consortium that owns the Tarneit-based Western United club. The Federal Court ruled it had no confidence in WMG's last-ditch bid to save the club after club lawyers argued during Thursday's first winding up hearing that it had found a new backer capable of repaying the $800,000 debt owed by the club itself to the ATO. It submitted that secured creditor Johnson Controls had offered to pay more than $15m to the ATO and other creditors to save the four companies facing wind-up orders including Western United Football Club and ensure its own investment would be returned in the long-term via United's hopeful return to the A-League. The ATO Deputy Commissioner of Taxation first made a winding up order application to the Federal Court on March 20. ATO legal representative Adam Lukacs rejected Johnson Control's last-minute submission on the basis that WMG had failed for five months to secure financing to repay the debt, also citing the remote likelihood of Football Australia reinstating Western United's licence to play and therefore operate in a solvent manner. Western United have been plagued by financial issues for months, missing player and staff payments on more than one occasion, whilst owners such as WMG Executive Chairman Jason Sourasis and founder Steve Horvat face significant personal tax debts. Liquidators for WMG as well as three other companies owned by Sourasis were appointed by the court via video link at a midday hearing on Friday.  Update on Federal Court Hearing Friday 29 August 2025
Western United Football Club is pleased to advise that an application made this afternoon to stay the Court’s orders was successful. The winding up has been stayed pending an application to review the Court’s decision substantively and once that application is made next week, the stay will operate until the appeal is heard. Western United is doing everything we can to continue our dream.
