AFL agent turned soccer boss’ legal and tax troubles threaten Western United rescue deal

Former top AFL player agent turned A-League boss Jason Sourasis is fighting a series of business battles that could scupper a rescue deal for his financially embattled club Western United, which has been late paying player wages again.

The Age can reveal that Sourasis has been hit with a near $3 million personal tax bill via a director penalty notice from the ATO for unpaid taxes across six of his businesses, including the companies underpinning the A-League finalists.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/afl-agent-turned-soccer-boss-legal-and-tax-troubles-threaten-western-united-rescue-deal-20250623-p5m9la.html?utm_source=Social&utm_medium=X&utm_campaign=X

Turns out Jason's Tax Bill has gone up a bit from $3 million

In a separate County Court lawsuit lodged earlier this month, the ATO says Mr Sourasis's $6.7m debt to it comes from tax bills both he and companies he controlled failed to pay that date back as far as 2021.

Much of the debt relates to Mr Sourasis's Western Melbourne Group, which owns Western United and is behind a stalled stadium development in Melbourne's west.

Mr Sourasis is attempting to restart the project with funding from a lender.
If the plan succeeds it would clear the bulk of his tax debt.

The amount now claimed by the ATO is almost $2m more than it said Mr Sourasis owed when it first took legal action against him over unpaid tax bills in November last year.

First we had Steve Horvett dipping into his employeees Entitlements to prop up his WMG holdings share

Now Sourasis 'allegedly' dipping into the family friend and client's pay packet

Mind you, 50% Loans are more Shark Territory than Magpie

Former Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury has filed a $3 million lawsuit against his former manager and long-time friend Jason Sourasis, accusing him of misappropriating more than $2.1 million from his investment accounts over nearly a decade.

According to court documents lodged in the Victorian Supreme Court, Pendlebury claims Sourasis made over 50 unauthorised transfers from his investment company’s bank account between 2015 and 2023.

He also alleges that a $300,000 loan to Sourasis was never repaid, despite promises to return it within a day – later renegotiated with a 50 per cent annual interest rate.

Pendlebury says not a cent has been returned, with the debt now exceeding $600,000.

Sourasis, a businessman and majority owner of Western United FC, which lost its A-League licence earlier this year, “vehemently denies the claims” and intends to defend the case.

Pendlebury, 37, only discovered the missing funds in February 2025 after reviewing his finances and immediately terminated Sourasis’ role as his financial adviser, money manager, and tax consultant.

The transfers allegedly benefited entities linked to Sourasis’ Western Melbourne Group, which is pursuing a major stadium development in Melbourne’s west.

The writ, filed by corporate lawyer Leon Zwier of Arnold Bloch Leibler, asserts that the transfers breached fiduciary duties owed to Pendlebury and his company, S Pendlebury Investment Co.

Update on Federal Court Hearing
Friday 29 August 2025

Western United Football Club is pleased to advise that an application made this afternoon to stay the Court’s orders was successful.
The winding up has been stayed pending an application to review the Court’s decision substantively and once that application is made next week, the stay will operate until the appeal is heard.

Western United is doing everything we can to continue our dream.

We will continue to engage with the ATO and our sports & community stakeholders to have our licence renewed or reinstated.

Western United wound up by ATO after court adjournment refused

The Federal Court of Australia rejected an extension of time submitted by the club's owners and has found in favour of the Australian Tax Office's (ATO) application to have the football club disbanded in addition to several other insolvent companies.

Western Melbourne Group (WMG) Holdings had previously successfully requested an extension of time for the purposes of finding a new financial backer for the club after US property developer Maciek Kaminski withdrew from his plans to buy a $100m controlling stake in the consortium that owns the Tarneit-based Western United club.

The Federal Court ruled it had no confidence in WMG's last-ditch bid to save the club after club lawyers argued during Thursday's first winding up hearing that it had found a new backer capable of repaying the $800,000 debt owed by the club itself to the ATO.

It submitted that secured creditor Johnson Controls had offered to pay more than $15m to the ATO and other creditors to save the four companies facing wind-up orders including Western United Football Club and ensure its own investment would be returned in the long-term via United's hopeful return to the A-League.

The ATO Deputy Commissioner of Taxation first made a winding up order application to the Federal Court on March 20.

ATO legal representative Adam Lukacs rejected Johnson Control's last-minute submission on the basis that WMG had failed for five months to secure financing to repay the debt, also citing the remote likelihood of Football Australia reinstating Western United's licence to play and therefore operate in a solvent manner.

Western United have been plagued by financial issues for months, missing player and staff payments on more than one occasion, whilst owners such as WMG Executive Chairman Jason Sourasis and founder Steve Horvat face significant personal tax debts.

Liquidators for WMG as well as three other companies owned by Sourasis were appointed by the court via video link at a midday hearing on Friday.

The club had its A-Leagues licences withdrawn by an independent panel on August 20 and had a Football Australia appeal set down for September 2, but their reinstatement now appears impossible.

$15m white knight emerges but Western United still in limbo

A potential saviour has emerged who is willing to clear Western United’s $15.5m debt but it remains to be seen whether it has to come too late to save the embattled A-League club

Vultures trying to save their losses ?

Dunno how much Johnson Controls have already chucked in, but now they might be up for $15m more to clear the ATO debt

Secure creditor Johnson Controls has offered to put up the $15.5 million needed to clear Western United Football Group and WMG Holdings debt .

KAM Sports abandons $100m soccer property deal with Western United.

https://www.afr.com/property/commercial/kam-sports-abandons-100m-soccer-property-deal-with-western-united-20250827-p5mqch

What a surprise, I'm assuming this whole thing will re-appear with no Football team, no Stadium and a Westfield Shopping Centre instead

A multibillion-dollar greenfield development in Melbourne’s west is in limbo after US property investor Maciek Kaminski abandoned plans to take a $100 million controlling stake in the consortium behind the plans.

Kaminski’s plan to buy a controlling stake in professional A-League soccer club Western United put him in the box seat to develop a 62-hectare site around the club’s home stadium in Tarneit, but Kaminski said on Wednesday he would no longer proceed with the investment.

Kaminski’s withdrawal could be the death knell for Western United, which faces a wind-up hearing in the Federal Court on Thursday over $800,000 of debt to the Australian Tax Office.

Western United had secured a three-week stay of execution in early August on the grounds it needed more time to close its deal with Kaminski’s company KAM Sports.

But on Wednesday, KAM founder, Minnesota-based Kaminski and his son Mikhail, who heads the business, told The Australian Financial Review they were cutting the club loose ahead of the court hearing, citing its failure to pay players and the stripping of its licence by Football Australia.

“We’re going to be stepping away from the transaction,” Mikhail Kaminski said.

“If they’re not making wages payments on time, they’re not operating the club appropriately. We feel bad for people of Tarneit, the people in this great district, but we can’t sit around forever while we wait for government to tell us whether or not there’s something to buy.”

Businessman Jason Sourasis, who holds the majority stake in WMG Holdings which has led the property development-led deal with KAM, and who last week said the club would appeal against the withdrawal of its licence, declined to comment.

The failure of the deal to proceed – which would have led to the first privately owned sports stadium in Australia – means there is no financial backer for the team that finished third on this year’s A-League ladder and remains saddled with debts it cannot pay.

But it also raises questions about the role of property in underpinning an investment that would have required KAM Sports to build a new 15,000-seat stadium on land promised by Wyndham Council at the club’s Ironbark home in Tarneit.

The KAM Sports directors said they had been unable to reach an agreement with the council about how they would develop the land earmarked some 900 homes and new commercial real estate under the deal.

“The Tarneit land is valuable, but when you assess the fact that the Tarneit land basically pays for the stadium that is a requirement to receive the land … it’s really a push,” Maciek Kaminski said.

“We were in the process of having the conversation of redoing, or tweaking, if you want to call it, the DA and that has been a process, but they couldn’t get to the spot we needed.”

The KAM directors said they hadn’t closed the door on doing a future deal with Western United, but it would need to be done differently, with a different property deal and with their funds going towards developing real estate rather than paying the club’s debts.

“We would have an interest in having the conversation with the council and a league about restructuring the whole deal,” Maciek Kaminski said.

Wyndham City Council said it remained committed to the idea and would be willing to renegotiate the contract with KAM in good faith.

But the council that had to protect its ratepayers and KAM’s demands had become unreasonable, said Mark Rossiter, Wyndham’s head of corporate services.

“It is unfortunate that the potential solution proposed here appears to have turned into not much more than an expensive and time-consuming tyre-kicking exercise,” Rossiter told the Financial Review.

“All that’s happened here is for a long time they didn’t meet their commitments. They were largely financial. Not only did they not meet their commitments, they said we’re not going to be able to meet our commitments. One party who signed the contract is saying they can no longer hold up their end of the deal.”

So, WU are rolling the dice on their Appeal and refusing to let anyone leave.

I guess paying the wages 2 days early might get some brownie pints at the FA/First Instance Board ?
But still being overdue on the Super would've made for a stiff start to proceedings

Western United bosses have paid wages early this month and have also shelled out money for overdue superannuation payments as they attempt to prevent players from leaving the embattled Victorian club.
.
.

Player and staff wages were also late on three successive occasions from April to June before being paid on time last month.

This month’s pay, due this Friday, is understood have already been paid, and the club is also believed to now be up to date with superannuation money that was owing.

As a result, players bidding to leave United cannot use potential breaches of their contract as a way to get out of their deals.

It’s understood some players have asked United officials to be released from their contracts but have been refused.

Update on Football Australia Appeal

Monday 18 August 2025

Western United Football Club confirms it has today been granted an extension of time to lodge an appeal of Football Australia’s decision to withdraw its A-League licence.

We’d like to thank our loyal fans, members and partners that have rallied around the Club in the past week.

The support and love for the Green and Black from the community has been overwhelming.

It is these supporters that we will continue to fight for. As this is a regulatory process, the Club will be making no further comment at this time.

The West Melbourne man has been charged with 10 offences.

They include
  1. engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of an event or event contingency (x4),
  2. facilitating conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of an event or event contingency (x4),
  3. use of corrupt conduct information for betting purposes and
  4. attempting to commit an indictable offence.

Danzaki booked twice in the period in Question, managed 10 charges
Maybe he tried to get booked at other times ?

. Police allege four matches in April and May 2025 were the subject of "player to be carded" wagering manipulation.

Sydney (H) on 27th April

Adelaide (H) on 9th May

LOL, Ref wasn't giving out cards, but the subbed on player managed it

Wonder if they interviewed Aloisi about it ?

The fraud netted the 25-year-old about $16,000 across three games between April and May and his co-accused - Bayside Argonauts striker Yuta Hirayama - received about $5200.

Danzaki admitted to deliberately receiving yellow cards for reckless tackles on opposition players, including games against Sydney Football Club on April 27 and Adelaide United on May 9.

He and Hirayama discussed placing bets on games both in person and on the LINE messaging app.Hirayama would place bets on Danzaki’s performance, including that Danzaki would receive a yellow card, while knowing he would deliberately try and receive them.

The pair agreed to split the winnings from their bets - 70 per cent for Danzaki and 30 per cent for Hirayama. In a match against Auckland, on May 3, Danzaki tried to get a yellow card twice, by kicking opponents in reckless tackles, but the referee did not give him one.

He was then taken out of the match, but his substituted player received a yellow card so Sportsbet paid out the bet.

If you're not getting paid, how do you pay your own bills

One option

Two men, including a Western United footballer, will face court for their involvement in an alleged betting scandal surrounding the A-League Men's soccer season.

Detectives from the Victoria Police Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit charged a 24-year-old West Melbourne man and a 27-year-old Kingsville man on Sunday with numerous offences including use of corrupt conduct for betting purposes.

Both were bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 31.

While the individuals are yet to be publicly named, it is understood one of the men is a player at Western United and the other is a state leagues player.

The Australian Professional Leagues, who run the A-League competitions, confirmed a player had been charged.

"The Australian Professional Leagues is aware that one A-League player has been charged by Victorian Police with offences related to gambling," a spokesperson said.

Former A-League player blames $16k fraud on late pay

Former A-League club Western United’s “significant financial strain” led a player to commit betting fraud by recklessly tackling the opposition to receive yellow cards, his lawyer claims.

Ex-midfielder Riku Danzaki pleaded guilty to seven charges at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday over a betting fraud he committed with a friend who played in an amateur soccer club.

Shame about the Rebels. Would have been a nice earner for Western in a leasing arrangement.

Spoke to an insider at a dinner last night. They have already started renting out the venue for certain things. Had a national gridiron championship there a couple of weekends ago with 1000 people in attendance, and are looking to sign an agreement with school sport Australia to use the ground on an ongoing basis for their high end matches.

Its a revenue stream no other club has. It might not move the needle just yet but its a smart play.

Sad about Western United

New signing Jaiden Kucharski and captain Ben Garuccio unable to play for Western United due to FIFA registration ban

Western United could lose recent signing Jaiden Kucharski before he plays a competitive game for the club due to a registration ban that will prevent him and club captain Ben Garuccio from playing in an Australia Cup round-of-32 clash against Sydney FC on Tuesday night.

United announced the signing of ex-Sky Blues attacker Kucharski earlier this month despite knowing that he could not be registered due to an ongoing FIFA ban stemming from a unresolved financial dispute involving the club’s former striker Aleksandar Prijovic.

he ban also applies to left-back Garuccio, as he didn’t re-sign with United until after he had become a free agent, meaning he needs to be re-registered.

As a result, the pair can’t play against the Sydneysiders at Ironbark Fields, and Football Australia is also investigating whether United breached the ban by fielding Kucharski in a friendly game last week against NPL Victoria club Oakleigh Cannons.

The club’s proposed new ownership structure, which was announced in May and involves KAM Melbourne, a subsidiary of American company KAM Sports buying a $100m controlling stake in the club and its parent company Western Melbourne Group, is yet to be approved by the Australian Professional Leagues, which runs the A-League.

The lengthy delay for approval is understood to be because the APL is yet to receive KAM Melbourne’s completed ownership proposal.

Industrial action a possibility if Western United fails to pay players on time for fourth successive month

Western United players may consider strike action if the embattled A-League club is late in paying them for a fourth successive month.
Despite the players having been assured by the club they will be paid on Tuesday, this month’s pay day, they are ready to take action – with the backing of Professional Footballers Australia – should the “trust” be broken.
“The club has assured the players that this month’s wages will be paid on time and in full, and we trust that the club will keep its word in this respect,” a PFA spokesman said.“It would be extremely disappointing if this turns out not to be the case and the players are left, once again, to fight for their most basic employment entitlement.
”Such is United’s financial state that players haven’t been paid on time for the past three months, leading to the PFA lodging breach of contract notices with the club.
On each of the three occasions, players and staff were paid within a 14-day deadline given by PFA to pay or run the risk of losing contracted players to other clubs.
However, should wages again be late, the deadline could be limited to just two days, which if not met could lead to not only industrial action but also a demand that sporting sanctions be placed on United.

Hahahahhahaha

Quartet of James Donachie, Kane Vidmar, Riku Danzaki and Ramy Najjarine have also departed the Club at the conclusion of their contracts.

“On behalf of everyone at Western United, I would like to thank each player for their major contributions to a significant time for our Club,”

What a surprise

A-League boss Stephen Conroy says the competition has yet to receive a formal takeover bid for crisis-stricken Western United, who are facing fresh breach notices from players for unpaid wages.

No-one expects the Spanish acquisition

Kaminski's turn up at Atletico Madrids Head quarters during Sale speculation
Peter Kenyon (see Everton effort) is a known link in the chain

Out of Character, there were no premature emissions from the Polish wankers

According to sources consulted, the Polish magnate is considering both buying the club and becoming a shareholder, a transaction in which other investors could also participate and which could result in a reversal of control of the Colchoneros, as this media outlet has already reported .
Thursday's meeting was the first direct meeting between Kaminski and the Colchoneros' largest shareholder .
In response to questions from this outlet, neither party had made any official comments by press time.

Everton Bid June 2022

Looks like Western United and Melbourne Victory have something in common apart from stupid names

Former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is fronting a bid on behalf of the US-based Kaminski family and billionaire mining and investment magnate John Thornton, with the US consortium now in a period of exclusivity with current Everton owner Farhad Moshiri over taking control of the club.
