+x+x+xNo new ball, very strange decision, questioning Paine's captaincy here. The advantage of a great captain / batsman is how they can inspire the team - Kohli comes into bat & both teams react. Ponting & Smith were the same, these types of captain / batsmen can turn matches & this is the expectancy they create when they come to the crease. Paine is absolutely unable to do this. Paine can inspire others by quality keeping. Ok what is the current state of play as we head into the second day? Unless we make serious inroads into this Indian lineup today we are gonna be chasing a massive total. Most are saying this deck will be a belter for at least the next two days when due to these heatwave conditions it will surely bake and may then break up... bringing spin into play and variable bounce. So India will be wanting to keep us in the field for at least all today and some of tomorrow by which time our bowlers will be cooked and the batsmen leg weary. This was a bad toss to lose.

+x+xNo new ball, very strange decision, questioning Paine's captaincy here. This is the problem with a wk.captain What is his first priority; to captain or to keep wicket. If captaincy is first, then keeping is ranked second - not good for a test keeper. If keeping is first, then captaincy is ranked second - not good for a test captain. Fair comments.

+x+x[quote]Saw a bit of the game, in a family social setting, but wasn't focused. It looks like Australia has had a bad day in the field. Cummins got the spoils as he hit the deck harder to extract the little life it had. Good!

+x+xNo new ball, very strange decision, questioning Paine's captaincy here. If you are questioning Paines captaincy now, wait till the end of today & I may finally get someone agreeing with me as my view is unchangeable. This is the problem with a wk.captain What is his first priority; to captain or to keep wicket. If captaincy is first, then keeping is ranked second - not good for a test keeper. If keeping is first, then captaincy is ranked second - not good for a test captain. The first day showed how inexperienced he is, bad field management all round, he may have players with questionable ability, but it is how you lead & manage this on field - As a captain Paine could loose us this test. The advantage of a great captain / batsman is how they can inspire the team - Kohli comes into bat & both teams react. Ponting & Smith were the same, these types of captain / batsmen can turn matches & this is the expectancy they create when they come to the crease. Paine is absolutely unable to do this. The other advantage is sledging, wk always sledge but the captain does this the most, In our case we have one main person doing both. India is in no hurry to score runs, they want us in the field all day to day & part of tomorrow, stamp their authority on the game, have us very tired with sore bowlers by session 3 & then score. Hot today and tomorrow, then cools, India will be fresh & try to bowl us out twice. As it stands now 2 results possible - India wins or a draw. You will also see Paine wilt which will affect his captaincy and even worse decisions will be made, what is worse India knows this. I know most of you have Paine as a favourite, which is exactly what you accuse the selectors of - putting favouritism ahead of sound logic. As I saw it Paine's field placings.. specially in the final session were both imaginative and effective. India only scored their measly days total as the bowling was disciplined and the field placings stopped runs. I agree with you that as our best keeper he needs to be 100% focused on that and not have other distractions. This is even more important on a flat deck that offers up few chances such as this deaden..

+xSaw a bit of the game, in a family social setting, but wasn't focused. It looks like Australia has had a bad day in the field. grazor summed it up pretty well DC. Cummins got the spoils as he hit the deck harder to extract the little life it had. But credit to our other quicks who never let up with their discipline and even created some chances. Kohli could have perished at least three times but he is blessed by his gods. By stumps the deck had won. Will this game mirror the corresponding BD test last year... which turned into a veritable batting fest. https://www.cricbuzz.com/live-cricket-scorecard/17691/aus-vs-eng-4th-test-the-ashes-2017-18. Or this one in 2016. that made 2017 seem like a lively track. Except it did offer up a result after a Pak collapse on last day. http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/10617/scorecard/1000883/australia-vs-pakistan-2nd-test-pak-tour-of-aus-2016-17

+xPaine was too far back imho. Kohli has been lucky again. Pujara rock solid. Did Paine have to dive forwards, Baggers?

+xNew ball taken and straight to Starc and Hazlewood...Wasted... Tomorrow the opening overs will be taken by Hazlewood and Starc by the time Cummins gets to bowl a decent spell he is using a 20 over old ball.
In 45 years of following cricket I have never seen a more incompetent opening bowling attack. I've seen Rodney Hogg, Terry Alderman and Geoff Lawson. This is no offence to Pat Cummins who I truly believe is a talent waiting to explode. No offence to the GOAT who truly is the greatest Australian off spinner of all time. Starc and Hazlewood have been a major disappointment..., no pathetic, as a proud strong tradition of Australian opening bowlers. But Starc actually has an overall decent record, when he takes 5 more wickets he will join an elite class of players well positioned.
Josh Hazlewood is not competent enough to tie the laces of the extremely average Geoff Lawson, don't believe me
Josh Hazlewood 79 innings, 159 wickets Geoff Lawson 78 innings, 180 wickets and we know Geoff was a really good optometrist.
These two are the highest paid bowlers in Australian history. They are pathetic and a disgrace to the proud tradition of Australian fast bowling. They take the money but don't perform. They have no idea how to bowl on any pitch that doesn't have cracks running down the middle, or playing night cricket.
Are you serious?

+xwell we choked the runs on a dead pitch should have had a wicket but dropped a catch a bit of bad luck too with edges missing fielders and short balls ballooning in the air but landing safely we can lose from here. Winning isn't impossible either, but a draw looks likely There could be a lot of pressure chasing a big score a from a fragile, inexperienced batting line up. It also looks like Australia could be in the field for a long time.

The reason sandpaper was bought out onto the field and cost us players, was the inability of these two to perform. Warner tried to give them an advantage as he has done at shield level (yes Smith was warned by shield umpires about doctoring the ball) and Warner has been wearing tape on his hand for a couple of years now rubbing it on the ground for the grits and then was designated the official ball shiner. As Warner said when leaving SA to the media "The bowlers knew", and for the first time ever, I actually believe Warner.

+x+xNo new ball, very strange decision, questioning Paine's captaincy here. New ball swung for first two overs. Two gazzundas from a new ball.. What a bloody joke of a track. Yeah, not good. Something went wrong with this pitch.
