Australia squad for first Test against Sri Lanka: Tim Paine (c/wk), Josh Hazlewood (vc), Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Will Pucovski, Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle
Sections of this squad will now form the nucleus of our Ashes squad. Marsh brothers gone. Finch gone. Paine retains the captaincy. Brave selections with the addition of Renshaw and Pucovski. Reckon they must had one eye on Renshaw's short England County stint last year in which he scored 3 red ball centuries.. with a view to picking him for the Ashes. It certainly is not due to his 2018/19 Shield returns. Starc and Hazlewood survive. Again without Smith we lack that solid middle order.

+xThe main question is can we handle puck in a mature way don't put unrealistic expectations on the lad and drop him if he doesn't average 90 He has 12 games to get his average to 35. Let him settle and take his time The last thing we should be doing is putting unrealistic expectations on Puck and any other youngster. Jason Sangha has been talked about as the next big thing since his school days. Was one of the youngest players to hit an away Youth ODI ton. He is the second youngest batsman since Tendulkar to score a red ball ton against an England touring side. He is now 19 ..no double hundreds but two centuries from his 8 FC games at @32 to his name. Has the media put too much expectation on this kid? I am not saying discriminate.. be wary. These mental issues stem I understand from his being hit and suffering concussion on three occasions. Not sure in what matches. But that is telling me he is uncomfortable with the fast short ball. So he will be going into his debut match with added pressure thru his doubts over whether he will be hit again. and lose more game time. I would have eased him into international cricket via the A tour to England.

Have not seen sufficient of him to verify that. But I suppose it appears obvious. I saw footage of his 240 odd for the Vics and there were very few horizontal bat shots. He did hit some sublime drives in the V tho. Almost Ponting like. Looks to have a big future.. providing he can overcome these mental issues.

It worked for Steve Waugh after which he developed real steel in his game and finished a great.....

Tour match against the Sri Lankans. Cricket Australia XI: Joe Burns (capt), Kurtis Patterson, Scott Boland, Jake Doran, Jon Holland, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Will Pucovski, Jason Sangha, Matt Renshaw, Chris Tremain.
Jake Doran are they for real. Has Burns ever skippered? This is a strong tour match team..more so in the bowling. Jason Sangha joins Puck as the two next gens.

Not much to say - the Sri Lankan bowling is weak as hell, Lakmal may offer something in the day night test under lights with a new kookaburra - but that's rarely ever so well timed bar Faf's declaration at Adelaide two years ago... They're weak in seam bowling. Took the club to the top of First Division until a broken finger ended his season. Scoring big runs in English conditions is like gold for an prospective Ashes tourist.

If Aus don't get it done - I'll laugh. :P Australia squad for first Test against Sri Lanka: Tim Paine (c/wk), Josh Hazlewood (vc), Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Will Pucovski, Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle https://www.cricket.com.au/news/australia-test-squad-selections-sri-lanka-series-will-pucovski-shock-victoria-marsh-finch/2019-01-09I imagine it will be something like this... 1 Harris 2 Renshaw 3 Khawaja 4 Head 5 Burns 6 Labu 7 Paine 8 Cummins 9 Starc 10 Lyon 11 Haze Drinks mixed by Pucovski and banana prep by Siddle... CA XI warmup game includes Pucovski, Burns and Renshaw - prolly due to BBL: I'd say Pucovski would need a big score in that game with Burns or maybe even Renshaw failing miserably to get a shot in the test team... Mind you - Renshaw may just be being groomed for the Ashes in mind... That is precisely why Renshaw was picked. He smoked 513 runs..incl. three centuries during his 11 innings stint with Somerset. last year. Took the club to the top of First Division until a broken finger ended his season. Scoring big runs in English conditions is like gold for an prospective Ashes tourist. Just when you praise the selectors for dumping dead wood and gambling on youth..they mess it up by choosing a dud.. one of their project players that has never done anything to warrant the attention...Jake Doran. I am dumfounded Doran gets a tour match nod. When did he last keep? Tassie pick him as a batsman only. Why? When he only averages @28 from 32 games with a solitary ton. If they wanted to go for youth why not chooseJosh Philippe who has a ton in 8 Shield games, also keeps.. and has more talent in one finger than Doran has in his entire body.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xThe main question is can we handle puck in a mature way don't put unrealistic expectations on the lad and drop him if he doesn't average 90 He has 12 games to get his average to 35. Have not seen sufficient to verify that. But I suppose it appears obvious. I saw footage of his 240 odd for the Vics and there were very few horizontal bat shots. The reports are the mental issues are due to the concussions. 7 is plenty... Especially 4 when in teenage years... Brain is still developing then... Those whacks as a junior must have created acute trauma for Puck. Then to be hit three times as a senior.. does not help his mental state. Perhaps do away with the hook and pull. It worked for Steve Waugh after which he developed real steel in his game and finished a great..... You have not commented on the team Paddles. Should have been Pierson by a country mile with Carey playing the one day matches. If not then Wade could keep and be given a chance to show his batting. And you are right Philippe should be their in front of Doran as well, heck I would take Inglis, Gotch, or Nevill as well. Yes every other wicket keeper you can think of should have been selected ahead of Doran.

So is Burns going to play in the middle order or is it between him and Renshaw to partner Harris with the tour match an opening shoot out between the two?

Four are playing for three spots. Weather looks ok for two of the three days. I like day/niters with the pink ball. We go well in these games as a rule. CA should live stream it. Looking forward to it.

Burns has never captained from my recollection, Hartley, then gave Khawaja a couple of games, now Peirson. True to form the selectors have protected the CA big money players, Siddle???? to old, never a great performer, can't catch like a good 12th man, what's the point. I prefer the CAIX bowling attack, with Cummins for Neser, Lyon for Holland. Doran selection will be because of the Big Bash, the other wicket keepers are performing there. Forgot to ask you Baggers about Sangha facing Richardson, I fell off my lounge chair in laughter when I saw him play the bouncer, then realised the poor kid could have been killed. A lot of glaring problems for Sangha, can't play swing and it appears he wants to headbutt the bouncer, and out the next ball. I can only imagine what SA bowlers would be thinking if they played him in the Australian side. I just hope NSW coaches realise this problem early and work with him, unlike what happened to Phil Hughes, he couldn't play short deliveries either, and the poor bloke lost his life because of it. In case you missed this from Paddles on another thread I've bought it across for you to enjoy the article from NSW media https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/the-damning-numbers-that-reveal-australia-s-bowling-struggles-20190101-p50p1n.htmlBut it should all be familiar to you if you've read what Paddles and myself have been discussing, typical media only 2 weeks behind. Don't mention it whilst relevant, its only Sri Lanka without their best batsman, so should be easy numbers for the bowlers.

Pucovski 7 concussions since his junior days, Sangha as you point out.. Jack Edwards has not looked all that comfortable on a couple of occasions. Marcus Harris .. a little older than the others.. him as well. Keeps getting pinged on the helmet. Ponting says it is a case of not watching the ball to the last second before evading. Another example of poor junior coaching? Have already read that SMH article. I am not denying it. Still maintain Starc is the weak link. Could he be bringing down the others? Also has sandpapergate" have our quicks running scared to bowl reverse. Hazlewood for one has been a fine exponent of it in the past. As you know I have maintained he should dump swing because frankly he is not good at it. The only time he has swung the ball conventionally to good affect is during the day/nite pink tests. He can do it then..why not during the day?

He can do it then..why not during the day? These young players are being promoted well and truly before they are ready. There is a big difference between U19 pace compared to shield level pace, they're too slow in avoiding. One of these young players could be killed, and the Sangha incident against Richardson shows how little experience he has even in avoidance. They need an U23 tournament at the same time as shield. Get the talented a chance to adapt in the step up in grade, if they do well, then by all means promote them to shield, then on further if they continue to develop. Pucovski is not ready in my opinion, against Sri Lanka sure, nothing really above shield level pace, but if he does well, Ashes? Liam Plunkett can get it close to 150 as can Tymal Mills, For NZ Adam Milne can also get the pace up there. It is dangerous especially if as you said he has suffered concussion previously from being struck and that was against junior bowling. Why would sandpapergate prevent someone from bowling reverse? The more obvious question is why since sandpapergate can our bowlers no longer bowl reverse? How much effect was the tape, that Warner "our designated ball shiner" was wearing, having. It which was questioned by SA, IMO the masters of ball tampering, they know all the tricks. I'll say it, if others are afraid to, if any team in the world has a designated ball shiner, something dodgy is going on. I don't care which team it is, all players know which side of the ball to shine is.........the shiny one! you don't need special talents to work that out. Funny since Warner was asked to remove the tape from his hand, how his "injury", the reason for wearing the tape, miraculously healed and coincidentally Starc and Hazlewood, our "masters of getting the ball to reverse" can't do it any more, that was evident in the 2nd test SA prior to Sandpapergate. I still don't believe in coincidence.

+x+x+x+x+xBurns has never captained from my recollection, Hartley, then gave Khawaja a couple of games, now Peirson. I am noticing that a lot of our youngsters struggle against the short ball. Hmmm SA accuse him of tampering with those bandages on Mar 11... Warner denies it. Then sandpapergate two weeks later... Post sandpapergate no reverse swing for Starc and Josh... the irony is - Warner is the eldest and would typically be the first to retire and the write the bio - but I can see him joining t20 tours post Australia rep days... I thought about it Paddles and I do believe that the reason Starc and Hazlewood have been poorly performing, is that Australia is missing their designated ball shiner, they don't know which side to shine. Don't joke about this! A few off air, in the know, claim this is why they are struggling - not having illicit ball tamperers working on it.

Don't joke about this! A few off air, in the know, claim this is why they are struggling - not having illicit ball tamperers working on it. Not joking about it. Smith and Warner have been doing this for years. Daryl Harper picked up on it at a Sheffield Shield game and reported it, yet nothing was done by CA. This makes you wonder if Starc and Hazlewood have been getting an unfair advantage over others even at shield level? Did they get selected to the Australian side based on their ability to bowl with a tampered with ball? Another question is we have all played cricket, and if you were a batsman would you ever bring sandpaper out without telling your bowlers first to see if it was OK. As a batsman I doubt I would really know what a bowler would like the ball to look like to get reverse, and I definitely wouldn't do it without telling the bowlers first just in case I made the problem worse. And here is the article that shows that they have been prepared to tamper with the ball to get it to do something since 2016, and that's just when they were caught, how long prior? Starc and Hazlewood have led the attack since Nov 2015, forget the tears from Smith, he was unapologetic back in 2016. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/the-email-that-shows-umpires-had-raised-concerns-about-smith-and-warner-before-20180329-p4z6xh.htmlAlso note the whinge about "the quality of pitch" when you just got a public spanking by a shield team that obviously had no problem with the pitch, they got a result in 4 days. Another thing Australian players fall back on when they lose.

Pick up a paper and that is all you read. Is becoming tiresome. Langer says Maxie has been notified where he stands in relation to a test spot. I expect that is to produce more consistent runs. The enigmatic Victorian is evidently taking things into his own hands by playing some cricket in England prior to the Ashes. One red ball game and five white ball games. Perhaps Maxie you should have tried reversing that by playing 5 red ball games. Or as many as time allowed. Other than Maxwell bleating about being left out of the Sri Lanka series , Ashton Agar has reportedly been questioning his continual omission from any national sides. Now this is a bloke that should be jumping up and down and tearing out what little of his hair remains. He, believe it or not has a central contract, yet what national cricket has he actually played over the past 12 months? Sweet fanny all. Thats what.

Don't mention it whilst relevant, its only Sri Lanka without their best batsman, so should be easy numbers for the bowlers. I am noticing that a lot of our youngsters struggle against the short ball. Maxwell, Maxwell, Maxwell. Thats what. Did you forget the time where we stopped Maxwell from playing red ball cricket because he was told he'd feature for Australia and we left him rotting on the reserves? Or whenever it is time for some red ball cricket he gets called up for ODI's and T20's for the country. Not his problem Cricket Australia keep screwing him around, its a disgrace. Agar has been screwed around just as much. At lease Maxie gets games for his country. Agar is now the one rotting on the reserves bench. Now we hear Agar will miss further chances to don Aussie colors as he has surgery for a badly broken finger. In further news that should please Mike no end, Josh Hazlewood will be missing from our attack for the Lankan two tester. Josh is suffering from the early stages of a stress lumbar injury..the same injury that has floored Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff and even Peter Siddle. The puzzling thing is why? This injury usually inflicts boys before their bodies have fully developed.. not mature bowlers. Can we blame our so called sports scientists at CA as name me a mature bowler in past decades that has suffered this injury. Comments.

+x+x+xBurns has never captained from my recollection, Hartley, then gave Khawaja a couple of games, now Peirson. I've never seen him in the Kiwi Test team.

Great stats to read, Mike! Thanks for posting it. Very, very interesting comparisons. The strike rates are interesting. When Lyon bowls so many overs as a stock bowler, it doesn't as matter as much that he is taking balls every 75 balls if the runs are kept down. Alarmingly, Hazlewood at 73, is poor for a paceman. He is using a lot more energy. I've read all about strike rates over the years. Most of the top pace bowlers had strike rates about 50 -52 over the duration of long careers. Warne had a SR at about 58. Hover, he bowled more overs, and averaged only about 2.5 runs per over. Cummins is very good ATM at a SR of 43. Starc at 62 SR isn't that bad. All this data comparing bowlers over the world over a year makes for interesting reading. I think the current selectors are rewarding reputation, name and potential more with the bowling group. The local press is angy about Wade's non-selection with so many runs scored this season and an average of 60 plus in the Shield. I'm delighted Renshaw has been selected again - bit it is probably based on potential rather than peprfmance in this year's Shield. I think has has good technique ( according to experts I know) and bats time well under pressure. Outside Smith, I think Renshaw is potentially the best batter we have. He has played some dogged innings in Asia. I'd have preferred t the deletes to wait until after the tour game, and see how Meredith's extreme pace compares to military medium Tremain and Boland against Sri Lanka. Why hasn't Michael Neser been thrown in as an all rounder? He has performed in the Shield this year with bat and ball.

As I posted earlier he tore County cricket apart last year with his stint for Somerset. In my opinion Neser is no where near an all rounder. His bowling is not even first class. He is on the improve tho..specially with the bat.

+xAustralia squad for first Test against Sri Lanka: Tim Paine (c/wk), Josh Hazlewood (vc), Joe Burns, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Will Pucovski, Matt Renshaw, Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle
I thought they were having an Aus A 11 next week at Bellerive against Sri Lanka , before they selected the squad?

Perhaps that would have been a very good idea although the Sri Lankans are not exactly the toughest ever opposition. Their bowling is quite weak although Lakmal did destroy the New Zealand top order in one innings of the recent series. Even their spinners seem to be quite poor. Paddles is also correct that they have lost Matthews and the rest of their batting is nothing special. Chandimal is quite good, although maybe not in Australian conditions. Karunaratne is a decent opener but they have no one to pair with him. The squad also has 5 wicketkeepers in it.

I can understand why you are confused. CAX1 sides usually comprise next gen players. Not this one next week.

Is everyone aware the three day tour match is a pinkie? Being played at Hobart. We a should all be now aware that the First test is also a pinkie..but at the Gabba. The Gabba..Australia's paciest track. Wth the red ball hooping all over the place at dusk added to the pace and bounce of the Brisbane track..the centre strip is going to be no place for the faint hearted. Should be a great spectacle.

Four into three does not go. So on Jan I7 in beautiful downtown Hobart Joe Burns, Matt Renshaw, Marnus Labuschagne and Will Pucovski will go head to head for three batting spots in the First Test. Promises to be an intriguing tussle.

Jhye Richardson has been selected as Hazlewood's replacement, a good move although Tremain should be in the squad ahead of Siddle. Probably Siddle will play and he might do quite well against the weak Sri Lankan batting line up and then take his place in the Ashes squad.
Patterson must be added to the test squad after his performance in Hobart. Then we could play Harris, Burns, Khawaja, Head, Patterson, Labuschagne, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Richardson, Lyon This would be a reasonable team although Labuschagne should be replaced by Maxwell or Wade.

Richardson is a massive talent so have him in the squad so he can feed off the experienced blokes... the team mentors. I have always pushed Joe Burns cart. Unless he makes an irresistible case in these two tests..he is not on the plane to England. His two dismissals in this game still spell of a loose technique and impatience. Labuchagne on the other hand has the makings of a good Test batsman. Has a more solid technique than Burns.

Tremains just another on the Maxwell, Patterson, Burns etc list who get hard done by. Richardson is a huge talent but only has 11 FC games. Tremain is 27 and in the peak really of his career with 52 first class games and a brilliant average but CA has obviously identified something lacking in him and prefer the new shiny thing (see Harris, Pucovski). That said Id rather they play Richardson than Siddle to replace Hazlewood. The odd thing is I dont think they have much of a pecking order or if they do the criteria changes frequently. They had Doggett and Nesser for the Pakistan series

Evidently Tremain was slacking it and was told by CA in no uncertain terms that international cricket needs 100% commitment. Tremain said in an interview that he had been training for a nine month season as he did not see a test bowling spot for him any time soon. So for him to have been selected in this match with a view towards the Ashes.. he has to have satisfied CA of that missing 30% commitment.

Got a bad feeling of choosing Jhye over tremain
He is lethal when confident but if he goes for runs he loses his rhthym. Needs to mentally toughen

Take a squizz at Richardson's numbers five games 27.@19... most impressive. Superior to Tremain. the thing is the Dubbo,NSW -born Bushranger has had three solid years on the trot. That should stand for something.

Pucovski has to play in the First Test. Pucovski belongs no where near the test side at the moment, nor does Renshaw, bring Patterson into the squad and these two should miss out. Burns, Harris, Khawaja, Head, Patterson, Labuschagne is the only real option for the first test. The 4-6 could be swapped around, not sure what is the best order.

His recent red ball success in England is the reason he is back in Ashes favor. I am not sold on either Burns or Head. Labuchange going on his knock today is close.

Burns deserves another chance but it may not work out for him again, if it doesn't then he might struggle to get another chance. Labuschagne is not good enough,. Pucovski needs time to sort out his game against the short ball, until that happens all the promise in the world will not help him.

+x+x+x+x+x+x2 centuries and 2 not outs for patterson. Too late to draft him into the test team? If CA wants to avoid gross ridicule from the media it will draft him in. Choose Pucovski for the same reasons we chose Renshaw when he was 20. On promise. Forget that he has only played a handful of FC games..he is a quality batsman. As Renshaw is. His recent red ball success in England is the reason he is back in Ashes favor. I am not sold on either Burns or Head. Labuchange going on his knock today is close. I am not sold on any of Burns, Head or Labuschagne. However Head is in the side fighting for his position, I doubt he will be there by the end of the Ashes. Burns deserves another chance but it may not work out for him again, if it doesn't then he might struggle to get another chance. Labuschagne is not good enough,. Pucovski needs time to sort out his game against the short ball, until that happens all the promise in the world will not help him. Head deserves his place for mine. Averaged circa 36 in his first Test series against top teams in world, and had little support from experienced Test batters. Since you've posted on 442 you hate all posters on 442, including yourself, I'm not sure why you are posting here, Test Fan? LOL! (I Hope).

Patterson scores two centuries and will not play the first test. Yet three of Labuschagne, Pucovski, Burns and Renshaw are going to play. Only Burns has any real claim to play, Labuschagne despite getting 50 doesn't belong there.

+x+xCan Holland bowl his team to victory. No. The game is a draw. Renshaw 4 Burns 4 Labu 5 Patterson 10 Pucovski 5 Sangha 4 Doran 7 Tremain 5 Neser 5 Boland 5 Holland 6 From attending most of the game live, I'd give: Renshaw 1 ( was my pick for our best long term long term batter from the young blokes about 20 years old) Burns 2 Labu 6 - is improving batting and right arm wrist spin bowling. Bowled a few flippers that nearly got him some LBQs. Made a solid 50 in 2nd innings. Patterson 10 Pucovski 7 Sangha, batting 1, bowling 4. Doran, 9 Batting, 5 keeping. Tremain 3 (plodder) action doesn't take much out of him though - good for donkey work. Too many balls hit middle of Sri Lankan bat. Boland 3 (plodder) action doesn't take much out of him - good for donkey work. Too many balls hit middle of SL bat. Neser 4 - bowled livelier spells, but his action takes a bit out of him. Didn't see him bat, although his regular FC average is 23, and he has 50 average this season. Holland 6 - impressive in second innings. Patterson gets 10 as a TCA mate who is a former Shield VC and state selector, rates Patterson's footwork, back foot stroke play, front foot stroke play and concentration to be very impressive. He finds technical faults with every current top 6 Aussie Test batter. Pucoski gets 7 - because he rates him as very, very good, and very talented, apart from the short ball, but he played a few decent hooks and pulls I didn't see in his second innings. This former Shield VC finds fault with nearly every batter in the world, including Warner and Smith, apart from Kohli, Pujara and Kane Williamson. He thinks few Aussie Test batters can concentrate for sufficient periods. Apparently Jhye Richardson is 3 months younger than Meredith - both 22. Richardson is more experienced and has been selected on ODI form. He may be more consistent than Meredith, but from what I've seen is less explosive. IMO Richardson and Meredith should've played this CA 11 game against SL, not Mickey Mouse cricket instead. SL very competent against Aussie pacemen, who were nagging and accurate, apart from Neser at times. No Philander or Abbas in our lot. Kumara was easily the most threatening fast bowler in the match. SL will miss Herath, although before declaration SL spin from both ends was worrying Pucovski (less) and Patterson, who was dropped twice in the 80s. Really surprisingly, Aus's best bowlers in second innings, on what is usually a tough pitch for spin, were Holland, Labu and Sangha!

Not what your TCA mate says. In which case Pucovski has to be rated on what we saw in this game..not what he will produce in future. that is why I gave him 5.. His 23, 33 warranted a pass mark only. Threw away his wicket in first innings with a poor execution of his achilles heel.. the short ball. Look far more composed in the second innings. Reason I have him in my First Test side. Reckon I was being generous on Burns.. he showed impatience and a loose technique for his two dismissals whereas Renshaw perished to good balls. I did add a point for Burns captaincy. From memory those two dropped chances off Patterson were from his weakest shot the cut which he tends to hit in the air. But lets face it Patto was in total control at that point and they were blistering shots.. half chances at best. The declaration was near as well. After watching his performance in this match I am making a bold call that Patterson is the best batsman in the country.

Was wondering why Sangha only had two overs in the match. Not sure CA would have been pleased with Burns. Sangha has been identified as a potential international class leg spinner..albeit as an all rounder. So should be given the confidence to bowl more overs. He is technically better than Labu. You keep pushing Meredith's barrow. I think he has a big future but I wanna see him smash open the door with a big finish to the Shield season. Richardson is a different bowler to Meredith who relies on sheer pace for his wickets. Richardson skids the ball more, has better variety and has two gears. I would rate Tremain better than a "plodder". He was not plodding in 2017/18 when he was the top Shield wicket taker with 51 @21.. 12 more than his nearest rival. His last three seasons have shown much improvement and consistency. I do not see Neser as a Test class bowler. Lacks consistency. See his last two Shield seasons..that tells a story. Please do not bring run scoring into the equation when selecting a Test fast bowler. Mike does the same. If he can also bat then pick him in the shorter formats as an all rounder. Now on Hazlewood you say he should have been sacked. Yes his form has declined the past 12 months but he remains our premier seamer. CA and a host of former players and pundits say same. Could his sudden back trouble have been ongoing and in conjunction with his drop in form? I blame his injury on the nongs at CA insisting he bowls at 140kph. That injury now opens the door for Jhye Richardson. I wish him luck.

He is improving quickly and is in very good form at this moment - like Patterson is with the bat. Tremain may do better with the Duke ball in the second half of the season. But like for like he is a plodder on the Bellerive pitch compared to others. I reiterate, too many of his balls found the middle of SL bats. Steyn was selected early for South A and that turned out well. Try Meredith now. Regarding Neser, I see him as a replacement for Mitch Marsh as an all rounder .

You said you gave points based on what you saw live. Pucoski looked good to all and sundry, but many had untrained eyes. The former Shield VC, substantiated, in detail, what we thought looked good with him - good front foot shots, good cutter, lot of time to play his shots, good footwork, got side on - his Achilles heel being the short ball - in the first innings. 33 NO looked good in the second dig for Pucoski. He is not going to succeed at test level if he has no way to handle the short ball. Steve Waugh found a way, it was ugly, sometimes very ugly but effective. If Waugh found a way Puck will too. Look what Tugga managed once he abandoned his riskiest shots. Became one of the best 'stonewallers' we have produced. Puck is the most exciting young batter I've seen for some time. My thoughts were confirmed by experts. I'm sure he has the talent, even now, or at least in the imminent future, to dominate opposition Test attacks. None of our current players do, apart from Smith home and away, and Warner on home pitches. I wish Sangha had lasted longer than his 3 off 9 balls, because I've read rave reviews about him too.

Totally with you and your TCA mates.. Puck is our most exciting red ball batsmen in a generation. Sangha never got started because he too fell to the short ball. These young blokes feel they have to impose themselves on the bowling early in their innings. I put it down to the plethora of limited overs cricket.

My Test team for Brisbane.
Khawaja Harris Patterson Labu Pucovski Paine Neser (batting averaging 50 in Shield this season, - 300 runs scored, some donkey work in bowling) Cummins ( instructed to bowl within himself, with line end length) Starc Lyon Meredith (3 over spells) with a lot of work done by Cummins, Lyon and Neser. Also, Labu if he is keeping runs down. If Starc or Meredith are bowling erratically, take them off quickly.
One puzzle today is that Joe Burns has played 14 Tests, with 3 centuries and 4 fifties with an average of 37! He is 28 years old, but I'm amazed he has scored so many 50 plus innings!
He should have played at the start of the Indian series with these performances and average.
I'd have dropped Hazlewood anyway. His Test figures have been awful in the last 12 months.
Batting Paine at 6, because he is averaging the same as the other batters anyway ATM.

Reason I was jumping up and down in my posts that they missed a huge trick and were wearing caked egg after omitting Patterson. He is the only player they may change mind over and draft into the squad to cover their embarrassment. I agree with your batting lineup. Except Paine. He does his best work at #7 imho.

I don't think Pucovski is ready and throwing him into a struggling team seems a very risky way to destroy his confidence. I'd bring in Head for him because i feel he did enough against India like Harris to have a few more tests. And drop Labu for Burns, move Khawaja to 3 and Patterson to 4.

Mate, I've just seen most of this Test squad play Sri Lanka. Before the game I would have had Renshaw first in. Seeing him live, he is a shadow of what he was. Conversely, and surrounded by FC grade cricketers with a former Shield vice captain's opinion, Pucoski is a class above anyone in the Test team based on potential and talent. Even if it is too early, this guy's shots are class. He has the capacity to improve quickly too. Also, he has the talent to dominate an international attack - something we sorely lack ATM. Also, Labu is improving. His wrist spin surprised and he also put together well compiled 50, whilst Burns was out cheaply and quickly in both innings against SL. Notwithstanding, Burns already has three Test centuries from 14 Tests, so he should almost have been picked against India with this record.

What happened with Renshaw is why i think we shouldn't be rushing to drop him into this team. Rightly or wrongly he will be expected to perform in an utter mess of a batting lineup right now. A bit more first class cricket, Smith to come into the lineup will help protect him a bit more. I'd be preparing him to join the 11 in the 19/20 Australian summer, not throw him into the deep end against Sri Lanka and the soon to be Ashes.

Renshaw 1 ( was my pick for our best long term long term batter from the young blokes about 20 years old)
Mine too. I see his problems as being lack of confidence borne out of disillusionment. He has the game to still be a long term Test player imho. . I see CA as responsible for his deline by picking him and not having the confidence to stick with him. Heck he was only a 20 years old kid. I also have CA seeing the error of their ways by choosing him in this game. Mostly it was on the back of some excellent red ball cricket he played for Somerset in the England County season last year. 550+ runs with 3 centuries in 11 innings and a lofty average in English conditions spells he has the quality to play in an Ashes.

+x Mike has not been round much lately. Dont tell me he is slumming it in some exotic clime again. Where I live is perfect in warm weather - good beaches close to the city, few jellyfish in the sea, good entertainment, clean air, picturesque scenery, uncrowded, plus FC and international cricket to watch. I've travelled a lot. Few places I've visited are as pleasant as where I live in warm weather.

You can do nothing in this weather other than cool off in a pool or switch on the aircon.

+xReports Patterson has been added to the test squad. No brainer really should be making his debut in the first test. NSW batsman Kurtis Patterson called up for Gabba Test after striking twin tons in Hobart pink-ball tour match against Sri Lankans
Yes not confirmed as yet. But CA site says that at end of article.. is this just media sensationalism.. to get CA to include him? If so then sanity prevails. Did not think CA would roll over. Good for them.

+xReports Patterson has been added to the test squad. No brainer really should be making his debut in the first test. Shame. I think Pattinson is being selected on name and past performances, not current form and performances. At Bellerive this year in the Shield, he has looked like a pop gun compared to bowlers like Riley Meredith, Billy Stanlake and Jhye Richardson. If the selectors want a pop gun bowler with Shield form, by all means his Vic teammates, Tremain and Boland, have done better in the Shield and can bowl long spells. Arguably Michael Neser, who can also bat, is more venomous than the current incarnation of Patto. He was a terrific bowler few years back, before injury, but he isn't the same bowler anymore. I feel sorry for him. Patto doesn't have the stamina to play a five day Test and bowl long spells either. The axiom about Greg Chappell, in cricketing circles is that he is so arrogant as a selector, he doesn't even need to watch the Shield, or tour games against international teams, because he knows everything already about all players' ability! How can a panel of selectors select a Test squad before a 3 day tour game with Sri Lanka playing a CA 11? It is ludicrous. Squad players failed ( Burns, Renshaw), whilst others not included in the squad, like Patterson, and Doran for that matter ( even though his Shield form doesn't warrant a selection), performed well.

Kurtis Patterson really deserves his chance. Even if he fails he has earned the right. He should go straight into the Test team. Moreover, when the three above him ( Renshaw, Burns, Labu) were struggling on what looked like a tricky Bellerive pitch, Patterson had no trouble on the Bellerive wicket.

Patterson has suffered from non conversion in his FC career. Scores heaps of half tons but the three figures have evaded him. Only has 7 from memory. With these two back to back tons and against international opposition, hopefully the monkey is now off his back . Like all quality red ball batsmen Patterson has so much time to play his shots. His driving is immaculate as his his pull shot. I love the improvement in his spin play. Specially in his use of feet and crease. He is ready for Test cricket.

Ok who makes way for Patterson as surely he is in the First Test if reports are correct? I want Renshaw, Harris and Pucovski. Burns carries the drinks for mine. Renshaw, Harris, Khawaja, Pucovski, Labuchagne, Head is my top six.

+xOk who makes way for Patterson as surely he is in the First Test if reports are correct? I want Renshaw, Harris and Pucovski. Burns carries the drinks for mine. Renshaw, Harris, Khawaja, Pucovski, Labuchagne, Head is my top six. Kurtis Patterson is a level headed young man. Feet firmly planted on terra firma. This is part of a recent media interview. “My focus is to try and win games of cricket for whatever team I happen to be playing for. This week it’s the Cricket Australia XI, on the weekend it was St George. It’s a goal in the back of my mind to represent my country one day but it’s not the reason why I get up to go to training in the morning. I do that because I’m really lucky to have a job that I love and I’m passionate about. We play to the situation of the match and do whatever is required for the team. From a leadership point of view it’s about rewarding players who do that and for me it’s about going out and winning games . I’ve been quite consistent in the last three years of Shield cricket. It’s something I really pride myself on with my batting."

Cricket Australia has confirmed NSW Blues batsman Kurtis Patterson will join the Test squad ahead of the Sri Lanka series, following two centuries in a tour match last week.

Renshaw, Harris, Khawaja, Pucovski, Labuchagne, Head is my top six. You cannot seriously want Renshaw to open in his current form, I want him in the test side but he has to be in form to pick him. My side would be Harris, Burns, Khawaja, Head, Patterson, Labuschagne, Paine, Cummins, Starc, Richardson, Lyon. 12th man Siddle Pucovski and Renshaw to miss out. I have no idea what the team will be. If they want to play Renshaw, Pucovski and Patterson. Perhaps Head misses out. However I expect they gave Renshaw a chance to score runs and get pick and as he failed in both innings he will not make the side.

Australian cricket needs an injection of new talent for the future. Two of Burns, Labu or Renshaw to miss the boat as they should stick with Harris.

Burns is a far better opener than Renshaw currently. Realise too I thought Handscomb was in the squad but hes not. It should be Burns Harris Khawaja Patterson Head Labu/Pucovski Paine Cummins Starc Richardson Lyon But Id be tempted to play Burns at 6 and Renshaw open because Im not convinced with either Labuschagne (who needs a few years to develop his game more before being considered for tests) or Pucovski (only 8 FC games and a big short ball weakness- id rather see him develop his game and learn to play the short stuff at FC level before getting exposed in tests). That said Pucovski sounds a lock in but if they dont consider Burns at 6 (but i also dont like selecting a player whos gotten in on form in one position to play somewhere else- see Finch), Id prefer Labu.

I could be swayed if Burns bats late order. Burns does not have the technique needed to handle the new moving ball. At least against international attacks. Check out his two dismissals in the tour match.. whereas Renshaw perished to good balls. As I have already said Renshaw has been resurrected due to his contention for an Ashes berth. I have picked Labu on his all round ability. He is not even close to being a top notch spinner but he does have a knack of picking up vital wickets. Pucovski has been picked on potential. I dont see the sense in having him carry the drinks. His second innings.. tho only 33.. was impressive.

Puck has the class to dominate the SL attack - even now, despite the short ball weakness. Nobody else based on what they've done empirically, has that level of talent in your top 6, apart from Patterson hammering the SL attacking in Hobart and at a fair clip. We need Puck now. Burns has failed twice as an opener at Bellerive against SL in the last few days. Why does Burns deserve a chance when he failed twice in a pressure game against the same team we play in a few days?

My point exactly. I would play him at #5 or #6 as he does bring experience to the table.. tho not a lot of Test experience. Think he has played 8 games or so at a not very flattering average. His second chance..he has to grab it.

+xWhy does Burns deserve a chance when he failed twice in a pressure game against the same team we play in a few days? Because hes been statistically the best sheild opener over the last few seasons and to me that type of consistency counts more than failing in two innings. Hes one of the few who also has a FC of 40+. A lot of our selection issues have come from picking the guy whos had a good two games as opposed to the guy whos had a good few years. Patterson is a great case because hes both had great form with the unbeaten hundreds but also has been there abouts for a few years. I do agree the team I had lacks a bit of dynamism but the whole squad does and speaks to the levels that youre banking on a 20 year old to be a match winner. Ive said before Id have had Maxwell and Wade at 5 and 6.

It most certainly should. Good long term Shield form should be rewarded. That I think is the reason CA has not considered either Wade, Doolan or Cooper as those three lack consistency as FC level.

Some stats to support Burns' case is he has played 14 Tests, averages 37, has 3 centuries and 4 fifties in those Tests. I don't think he is in good form ATM though.

One bad test shouldn't wipe his chances or be indicative of his form. His past 4 shield matches he is averaging 64.1, he deserves his chance. Especially considering his test average in the past is hardly poor, especially for our current group of players.

Pucovski carrying the drinks is perfect for him. He gets the exposure to the squad and gets an idea of the levels. He gets the joy and motivation of the call up but doesnt get flung into the pressure cooker that is the test squad currently.

I wouldnt mind him playing at #6 if we were coming off a comprehensive series win against India and sandpaper gate never happened and there was a pretty settled top 4. But I dont think the test squad is a currently good environment for a 20 year old with 8 FC games to be in. I do hope he proves me wrong though and has a career vaguely like Ponting

I gave it earlier in the thread. I'm pretty sure on this line up after seeing most of the Bellerive 3 day game, CA 11 v SL. Khawaja Harris Patterson Head Puck Paine/Labu Paine/Neser (if he is batting as well as his averaged of 50 in this year's Shield suggests, he is the pace bowling all rounder) Cummins (with instructions to bowl within himself) Starc Lyon Meredith I would have dropped Hazlewood anyway. Over the last year his figures have faded dramatically. Paine is definitely captain/keeper, but I'm not sure on Labu or Neser. The fire comes from Meredith and Starc. The most hostile and fastest bowling in Australia that I've seen this season, has come from Meredith. Stanlake has also bowled some withering spells, but he does not have the stamina for FC cricket. His is a Mickey Mouse cricket specialist.

Four lefties in the top 4. Not a good game plan. If Paine has as good a FC record as the other #6s then ok pick him there . This allows for a further batting or bowling option or dare I say it.. an all rounder.

+xDecentric what XI would you pick though from the already selected 14 players. Good question? Because I've just seen Renshaw and Burns fail at Bellerive, I don't want either of them in the Test 11 at all. Labu's bowling was surprisingly effective in the second innings at Bellerive against SL. He landed his flipper and had close appeals for LBW. Given who is in the squad, I'd probably give him a start at 6, whereas Richardson can replace Meredith. I think the three pace bowlers need a back up all rounder though, which Neser can do. In football I don't usually disagree with the coach's selections too much, but given I've just seen the prospects play, and, with so many former top level cricketers in the TCA members criticising the selection panel, not just fans, I feel more disgruntled. It is a shame Sangha didn't perform with the bat, but in a few overs he looked good with the ball .

Yeah youd think the guy with 6 tests and averaging 32 should be focus on making some runs. Youd think theyd have learn from giving it to Marsh when his spot in the team wasnt a given

+xStill the composition of the First Test has not been announced? Hello CA it is on in 24 hours. We speak of this new culture. I am all for it. Play hard but fair. But this absurd policy of choosing the Test squad before the tour game can only bring discontent among the team members. This is not good culture. . Already there must be some players seething over Patterson being jettisoned into the squad when he was not one chosen before the tour game. If Patterson plays one of the chosen will miss out. This is very bad policy and our selectors should be put on notice over it.

Youve also got players like Wade quiet fairly saying hey if this game had a bearing on selection why wasnt I given a go. And I do think the excuse of hes making runs but not high enough in the order ridiculous. Dont care if youre averaging 75 and hitting hundreds from 11. Its a mess but, besides the Patterson callup, CA have done very little right recently and even as you say the Patterson decision has its own issues. It sounds like Patterson is in and Heads obviously playing if he just got VC so I think the only spot up for grabs are second opener (Burns or Renshaw- I think theyll go Renshaw) and at 6 (Labu or Pucovksi- probably Pucovski but who knows) and third bowler (Richardson or Siddle- I think theyll go Siddle). Still also cant rule out them going for the ridiculous and pushing Khawaja to open with Labu at the madness of 3 and Pucovski 6

+xa mess still feels an improvement on what we had before. As long as they don't select labu its hard to select a dreadful side from what they chose RedKat precisely the side Ricky Ponting has picked as his preferred lineup. Includes both both debutant batsmen. Ponting’s XI: Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Kurtis Patterson, Travis Head, Will Pucovski, Tim Paine (c/wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Peter Siddle/Jhye Richardson. Please dont fall into the trap of replacing Hazlewood with Siddle. Not in the same class. I want the unpredictability of Jhye Richardson let loose on the Lankans.. I have to say I have a problem with Labuchange at #3. I would rather go for Patterson. But is that putting too much pressure on him. I think not as Patto has a calm demeanour.. whereas Labu looks a bit of a loose wire to me.

Id go Richardson (but would have initially selected Tremain) over Siddle for sure but I think selectors will go "safe" on that pick. The problem I have with Pontings team is Labu is barely a test cricketer and for all his nice technique strikes me as someone who got selected a few years early. To have him in the team is a risk and Id only be selecting him as a #6 if at all. Hes not at all suited to such an important postion as 3 and it probably does his own development harm. Also youve got the best batsman in the side, Khawaja, batting out of position. Its a ridiculous selection but the more I think of it the more I think theyll go that way.

hazelwood is out of form but indeed siddle is worse. If you want to improve on Hazelwood take a punt on a player with a lower 1st class average

You want a time batter like Patterson no lower than #4.

Brisbane is having similar weather to Sydney low 30sC with cloud and humidity. Sydney's summers are usually more temperate.

Warner is probably the biggest threat to Burns' spot in the team, it might be that it is a battle between Burns and Harris to partner Warner for the Ashes, rightly or wrongly. Only if Burns and Harris fail against Sri Lanka could I see Renshaw playing the first test of Ashes and even then he needs to find some form.

I would say Warner is the biggest threat to Harris and Burns. These two have to absolutely smash down the door in the next two tests to ward off the slugger. I still want Renshaw over both Burns and Harris. Should he miss the next test Renners only for an Ashes berth is the remaining four Shield games.

+xYou want a time batter like Patterson no lower than #4. He had a strike rate of about 70 - 80 in one of his centuries in Hobart!

The right team has been chosen. Renshaw could not be picked in his current form, bur hopefully finds form soon as we will need his quality at some stage in the next few years. Pucovski is not ready, far too early to put him in the test side, but certainly one to watch in the next couple of years. Richardson ahead of Siddle was a must but I am a bit surprised it happened. Now just need to get Tremain in the squad ahead of Siddle.

Burns deserves an extended run as a reward for shield form. Harris deserves the series but pressure would mount on him if hes got 6 games and no real scores Also Marnus at 4 is I think his fourth position in the order (3,4,5,6)?
