Would an increase in salary cap curtail the number of young Aussies breaking into the HAL? More money means being able to buy more O/S players. Yes or No?

This is where a decent transfer fee regime needs to also be in place. The best players from smaller teams being poached means a transfer fee and more money for the game. The smaller team will then have money to buy or develop another similar player.

The HAL itself is a cog in the entire system and bigger teams will also be subject to this since Aussie would want to make it in Europe.

Just because it’s common practice, it doesn’t make it ok.

More leagues will implement salary caps or other equalisation measures over time.

Because we have no pro-rel for starters. Forcing a club into mediocrity with nothing to play for will kill off any interest in the club whatsoever, especially a club like CCM who has struggled over the last few years. If they continue to struggle, I reckon they’ll fold within 5 years.

The other issues I have is that clubs like CCM and Jets won’t be able to keep their best players and will be forced to field a bunch of bench players and NPL standard players which will obviously reduce the standard of the league. Over the last few years, Southampton have continuously lost their beat players and will probably get relegated.

The other issue I have is that I think buying the league is morally wrong. In most leagues around the world, success is given to the highest bidder, not the best run club and not the coach who can get the best out his or her players.

I think the system we have helps reward the best run clubs. Many people also say that most HAL sides don’t have much depth. City and Adelaide have shown that clubs can improve their depth by developing youth. This forces clubs to develop their own talent rather than buying someone else’s.

Or you know..... improve the league.

Scrapping the cap is not as simple as scrapping the cap. Scrapping the cap goes hand in hand with a proper transfers and loans system as well as incentives for spending (ie prize money and P&R). Just scrapping the cap and doing none of the others is just plain stupid. As for bigger clubs spending big, I think this season has clearly shown that clubs have decided to reduce their player spend. There are 22 marquee spots in the league this season. Less than half of those are being utilised. Clubs simply aren't going to spend money unless there is a reason to. There is no prize money. There is no relegation. The ACL doesn't pay anywhere near enough to be attractive. The evidence also indicates that spending big on players doesn't result in a massive increase in attendances, memberships or ratings. The ROI simply is not there.

a luxury tax is still my preference. but whatever they go with, it needs to come in for next season. change needs to be fast tracked. 

financial fair play rules are an attempt to do this - in a roundabout way.  melbourne city, new york city, yokohama, etc are ways that man city are subverting it.  there are always ways that team subvert the rules. 

why do wealthier clubs get better players in australia if there is a salary cap?  because there are others incentives on the side. outside the cap.

Newcastle have played in the finals once since season 5, and Central Coast havent featured in the finals since season 9. Dont forget it is a top 6. Half of your fear of the salary cap is that we might end up in the same situation

Secondly, who determines City are going to be the most successful team? Understandable when the league first launched we had a salary cap as it was likely there were only 2 markets who could invest so there may have been a player quality gap and a Scotland scenario. But what City have actually done is proven we can have a second strong (financially) Melbourne team. WSW have done the same for the Sydney market. And the latest bids for A League teams were over $15m just for the licence. To think only 1 team has money, and there are only 18 good players, is stupid. And this is the other half of your fear


And dont forget ladies and gentleman, what Jegga posted is the strongest argument for not having a salary cap. The only point missing is the line about how $3.5m in player payments is the exact amount required to keep all markets viable

But as it is now only a delusional fool would argue that the A League is working or sustainable. The A League, in fact, is unlikely to exist in 5 years time unless the fundamentals change radically, and ask soon as possible. 

The cap isn't one of those malfunctioning fundamentals. In my view it has to go.
