Evergrande have sold their stadium to another property group due to their debt crisis, according to the skyscrapercity forum there's only a skeleton crew working on it at the moment. Evergrande isn't the only development company in trouble. Perhaps a China 2034 World Cup isn't such a sure thing after all.

Guangzhou's 100k seater coming along nicely, surely they'll add it to the Asian Cup if it's finished on time at the end of 2022, right? https://twitter.com/Peter_Guo2001/status/1347085736592375809

Thanks Greenlion, great post.
That picture kind of looks like they're renovating Worker's Stadium in Beijing to be rectangular, is this the case?

+x+xWas gonna say. Maybe that's going to get bumped up to to 45k or thereabouts for the Tournament? Some of those stadiums look mint. My theory is that given the boutique venue for Shanghai and sticking with existing venues in Beijing and Guangzhou, I'm guessing the plan is to build brand spanking new 80k+ rectangular venues in those big three cities when the World Cup bid comes around. Probably. But China can probably win the WC bid by promising to play the game on a cow paddock.

Bit odd that the smallest stadium of the lot will be the host of the final, but quality over quantity I guess. It'll be a great size for SIPG afterwards. The architect's project page: https://www.hpp.com/en/projects/fallstudien/pudong-soccer-arena/

CHINA TO HOST 2023 ASIAN CUP, MAKES STADIUM COMMITMENT Posted by TheStadiumBusiness on 4th June 2019
China has today (Tuesday) been awarded hosting rights to the 2023 Asian Cup, with the national team football tournament to be staged in a number of new stadia in the country.
China will build new stadia in seven of the 12 planned host cities, with the country’s bid also including one back-up existing stadium in each host city. Each of the back-up options meet the latest international competition requirements set by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
China was the only remaining bidder for the tournament after the Korean Football Association withdrew its proposal last month. That came after Thailand and Indonesia had previously exited the race.
China has proposed Beijing, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, Tianjin, Wuhan and Xi’an as host cities and the country plans on delivering new stadia by the end of 2021.
Minor renovation work is planned for the National Stadium in Beijing, along with the Tianjin Olympic Centre Stadium, Hangzhou Olympic Sports Expo Centre Main Stadium, Changsha’s Helong Sports Centre Stadium and Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Centre Stadium.
The final of the tournament will be held at Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium, which is currently under construction. The stadium will also host a semi-final along with Beijing’s National Stadium.
Other stadia that are currently under construction include Chongqing Liangjiang Football Match Centre Stadium, Dalian Professional Football Stadium, Wuhan Tazi Lake Football Stadium, Chengdu Fenghuangshan Sports Centre Professional Football Stadium, Shaanxi Province Stadium and Kunshan Sports Centre.
AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, said: “This is an important moment for football in Asia and beyond. Football now has a chance to unlock the potential that exists in the world’s most populous country.
“We have seen the rise of the game under the direction and investment of the Chinese government. Now we have the chance, with this Asian Cup, to develop a true legacy for the global game. Hosting the AFC Asian Cup will provide China PR with great facilities and infrastructure to stage football tournaments.”
China hosted the Asian Cup for the first and only time back in 2004, when the event was a 16-team tournament. The event is now contested by 24 teams and this year’s tournament in the United Arab Emirates was won by Qatar. https://www.thestadiumbusiness.com/2019/06/04/china-host-2023-asian-cup-makes-stadium-commitment/
