NJ v PG got 101,000 combined. 57,000 for WU v WSW.

It ain't a surprise that the crowds are dropping this season, next season will be the true test with the independence in full swing. If crowds continue to drop next season, then there are huge issues.

There has been too much negativity around the game lately.

Each market (ie sydney/perth/adelaide) is difference so i'm not too sure with the others, but with Perth i think its quite simple, drop ticket prices.

Also need increase the mainstream media presence, i remember last year against Victory, there was the #fillthepark moto flying around all local media outlets the week leading upto the game and we got 17k. People knew when the game was on. But because the prices are so damn high, alot of people cant afford to attend on a regular basis.

I think its really hard to find ways to get more bums on seats, we have seen with NJ & WP winning games and playing attractive football brought the crowds back. I sure both clubs dropped ticket prices at some stage for members or something.

But there is more to it then that, City are winning and playing some good football yet only get 5k showing up and I really don't know how that works. WU are the new kids in town and are doing great but can only manage 4k. There ticket prices are cheap but no one is going.

we won the asian cup and have one of the best women's players didn't improve much

City have never had "good" crowds and until Western United get the stadium they will always get terrible crowds. The inaugural teams are the ones we know CAN reach certain figures ie Sydney averaging 17k, Adelaide 13k, Brisbane 15k etc. All these teams are capable of getting back to those figures and I don't think it will take much to do so.

didn't we say "next season will be the test" 12 months ago when the expansion announcement was imminent, plus the IHAL? of course, both of those haven't been fully implemented yet, but a time will come where we can't hope for the "next season will be different" mantra

But SFC has always been successful yet only 10k turn up, I think Adelaide are fine but Roar should be getting more, maybe they need a good year for the crowds to come back.

If anything the Western United farce has contributed to the increased negativity around the league. The IHAL will have a full off season and there seems to be alot of positively around Macarthur, so there is hope.

I thought this might interest some people. It's on football atrendances in general.

When I look at it, I think we are maybe being a bit ambitious with our short term hopes. i would be happy if we had a 16 team league with an average around the 10-12k mark.

I don't care if we have some smaller teams with 6-7k average attendances, as long as they are paying all their players and staff full time salaries, then it doesn't matter if they are not hugely popular.

Thanks.

USA and China doing well and if we can sort our shit out 12k crowds would position us well too.

The ratio in Germany, England and Japan between top and second flight is about 30-40% which gives a reasonable target for our NSD, although I suspect that will take an existing HAL club to be relegated before that happens.

Spot on, good link.

Strong football countries like Portugal and Belgium getting averages of 10,800 and 11k.  Small countries where it's very easy to get around.

If we ever get to a 16 team comp, realistically, I would suggest that an average of 12k is out of reach  (we're talking about 4 more clubs like WU).
To reach an average of 10k would represent a fantastic result with a 16 team comp.
There will be clubs hovering around an average of 4k, which is fine, it's not an issue (if they go broke, they simply drop back to the 2nd div, or disappear altogether).

One of the main issues with HAL business model is that teams have to rent large stadiums, which then require a certain level of crowd to generate a decent atmosphere, look decent for TV and not to mention min crowd needed to cover costs. Also BR had the $8/head public transport surcharge to cover so this becomes a drain.

In a traditional football model, teams own their stadiums and smaller crowds look better and still provide good income for the team. NPL clubs love playing a HAL team in FFA cup because it provides a massive cash injection (4k @$25 entry plus $20 ea on food = $180K in revenue per game).

WU has the right idea, but they would have been better starting with a smaller cheaper stadium (say 1 stand with 4k seating, corporate and then standing on other 3 sides) and as crowds builds add additional stands. Thats the model used by most clubs around the world, although they have been around alot longer so have had more time to build up stadiums.

Absolutely agree with dropping ticket prices for the Glory.

In addition... I don't know how it works with active support other clubs, but Perth have bought in a thing this season where to get into the shed, you need to have a specific shed ticket, enter though a specific gate, and get a wristband as your ticket is scanned.
Previous seasons, anyone (18+) could get into the shed, you didn't need a specific ticket, just needed queue up and get a wristband after you'd entered the ground.

This is supposedly to speed things up (once you're in the ground you don't need to queue up again to get into the shed), but I can see it having a negative impact on shed numbers and maybe numbers in general.
If I want to bring a mate along, they now need to buy a specific shed ticket, can't just get a general admittance ticket.
And if you score a free ticket, you can't get into the shed with it.

Yeah the shed thing is stupid. I was speaking to Tony Sage just prior to the season and he mentioned he was satisfied with anything over 6k per game, which is strange considering 10k was suppose to be the break even figure at HBF.

Yes, that is weird.
I remember back when the Glory was only averaging just over 8K a few years back, and after one particularly poor crowd Sagey had a rant about "Maybe Perth doesn't deserve an A-League team". I wonder what has changed if he's now happy with 6K?

In any case, I hope they go back to the old system for the shed after this season. Yes, you need to queue up twice (once to get into the ground and once to get into the shed), but I never really noticed anyone complaining about it.

It's also being played at a stadium that isn't particularly easy to get to for half our fan base.
