+x+x+x+xsportsindustry@footyindustryAUWith one match to go on NYE, Round 12 of the 2019-20 A-league season has been attended by 38,800 people taking the season total to 598,726 at an average of 10,323. This figure is down -7.01% on the same time in the previous season, and down -0.97% on last seasons final average. The main thing that the comparison with last season is reflecting is the splitting up of the attendance in Melbourne with a third club. Attendance in Melbourne at this stage last season totalled 190,665 and this season it is 193,871 but there has been 17 games so far this season which is 6 more than at this stage last season. To be fair a lot of that would be Victory fans staying home because we've been shit. 7k down in the first game of the season wouldn't be that would it? We lost the prior semi final by a scoreline I won't repeat, our ACL campaign was abysmal, we had some random as coach, and our new signings were all injured, so yes, I think my explanation is more reasonable than saying they all immediately jumped ship to WU. Of course, only Victory would be disappointed with a crowd of 33.5k.

I thought new teams were supposed to engage new fans, not subdivide the existing fanbase When Heart came in a similar thing happened with Victory attendance dropping but their attendance picked back up the following season. Some of the drop in both cases can be attributed to Victory's form so we will have to see what happens if that changes. Another alternative is that there is not a market in Melbourne for more teams. Heart came in season 6 and every attendance dropped. Similarly WU came in this season and every attendance has dropped Interest in the league is low so interest in MV is low. All myths of Heart taking fans away from MV were dispelled when the league had a partial rebound and MV broke records for number of members WU may have shaved of a few thousand casual fans but its kinda moot in a season where casual fans are largely missing

Gosford Races called off because of extreme heat. Waterfront NYE fireworks called off. 46 degrees on my back decking 3 kms from the stadium at 5pm. All in all probably a reasonable crowd.

+x+x+xConsidering their poor form not bad. Sadly they look a mess. So it was a good bad attendance? What we have is a beautiful new venue thats about 10-15k too big for the Wanderers. When a club loses committed fans like Wanderers has over the last 3 years most of them are lost permanently. It's the same with the annual churn. To maintain attendance levels the club needs to get 10%+ new fans every year and the lost fans are unlikely to ever return to being committed fans. Wanderers have done really well to get attendance up to Pirtek levels in the first half of the season with the help of the attraction of the new stadium but it's likely that attendance will drop as the novelty wears off and the poor form will drive it further down. That doesn't mean that the stadium is too big. It simply means that the club needs to put in a lot of work to build its fan base over the next 5-10 years and with Macarthur marketing in the south west growth might be slow.

2,693 at Dolphin Oval for Roar/City in the W-League. Pretty sure that’s a record regular season attendance. And on a Thursday night too.

And it's another game played in front of a stadium with majority empty seats, so yes it does hurt Australian football.

I meant it hasn't hurt the game financially, neither the league or the club had to contribute money.

Roars main support base is North Side so for many getting to Dolphin is easier than Suncorp, mainly cod you can drive.
I’m not sure it translates in to that area wanting an A League team - the people there last night were the usual regulars. Interestingly a lot don’t gi to the men’s games and it seems we have a dedicated group that just follow the women’s team.

Dolphin stadium and Perry Park should be their home grounds. I know the arguments about transport, but Suncorp is a joke.

Perry Park has a capacity of just over 3,500 and to be fair it’s the home to Strikers who have A League ambitions themselves so not really on for Roar to muscle in uninvited.

I didn't realise how far north Dolphin is in Brisbane until I drove north on a road trip before Christmas. If a club was based there, a south Brisbane club would be a strong possibility. But as a stadium for one Brisbane club it won't work
