Agree. I dropped foxtel in May and I don’t feel like I’m missing anything at all. I was on an expensive plan to give a broad range of content but I hardly ever watched most of it.

The way of the future is a mixed coverage deal with streaming services, FTA and an in house FFA media option thrown in to the picture. It may need bring the $$ overnight, but it helps capture a broader audience, and limits the current issues of one broadcaster effectively benching our product and then claiming the numbers are bad. Of course they are when Foxtel go out of their way to show they couldn’t care less.

The old Foxtel model is dead in the water.  The only future for Fox is streaming.  Does anyone really have a set top box any more?

Some people were hanging on to the mysterious Kayo numbers like drowning sailors to sticks of wood.  The self-delusion had to be seen to be believed.

that's been the first rule of fight club for a very long time -

the FIRST rule of being a football fan is that you must believe that HAL ratings are much bigger than what they actually are.
the SECOND rule of being a football fan is that YOU MUST BELIEVE THE HAL RATINGS ARE MUCH BIGGER THAN WHAT THEY ACTUALLY ARE.

If you don't believe this, you're an AFL stooge, a MSM hack, a NewsCorp spy, or just a run of the mill football hater.

this mindset has been serving us well for years.

And Foxtel is happy to pay $30 million a year despite only a couple of thousand people subscribing for the a-league. OK

Ok, so you admit that there are many subscribers and that is reflected in the value that Foxtel put on the deal. Glad we got there in the end. Have a good night.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD!!
I have followed, read, even posted  my 'two/peneth'  on items of interest in the general forum but, for the life me, I cannot see how you would need a whole thread dedicated to discussing viewer numbers on, let's face it, one medium. My advice would be, forget Foxtel, they are dead in the water as far as football is concerned.
Let's look forward to the new way of presenting football in this country. Go JJ!!

The thread goes back many years.
There will be times when A-League games were getting 100+k, and consistently got over 70k.
So it provides a useful historical record, and it's good to know those old numbers, so that when we see number like 14k (which we see a lot), we know just how far interest in the game has fallen.
It's also worth noting that NRL ratings have remain quite stable, and if anything, AFL ratings are higher than what they were a few years back.

In fact just went looking at some early posts, unfortunately this particular thread only goes back 10 months.
The Wookie put up this post early on, it shows Fox rating averages for the opening game of last 10 seasons:

2011/12 - NJ/MH 65k
2012/13 - MV/MH 129k
2013/14 - Syd/NJ 115k
2014/15 - MV/WSW 122k
2015/16 - WSW/BR 71k
2016/17 - BR/MV 129k
2017/18 - MC/BR 100k
2018/19 - AU/SFC 67k
2019/20 - AU/SFC 52K

You can see there was a period when the opening games averaged above 100k, but then steadily started dropping, such that by last season it had dropped below the figure from 10 years ago.
I"m guessing the opening game for the current season dropped below 52k to continue that trend (currently all Fox ratings are bobbling between 9k and 18k, with 14k very much the mode - ordinary numbers when compared to previous years, even if you double to include the impact of Kayo).

Last season our attendances also dropped to just below the average from the very first season.

When I put this together, plus the fact that we lost all our sponsors ages ago, and NONE have been replaced, it sort of tells me that we are pretty much back to first base with the A-League, hopefully with 12 clubs instead of 8 (to be confirmed).

Some will use this as an argument NOT to introduce the NSD, but it actually might be an argument in favour of doing it.  Once you hit rock bottom, there's nothing to lose.

thats exactly right

its important that we understand what our real metrics are --- for the simple reason that the metrics are what broadcasters, sponsors and advertisers use to VALUE the HAL competition --- and pour $$$ into the competition.

the point i was making is that so many on this site prefer to live in a fantasy world and say that our ratings are much higher, its all a cover up, they don't count kayo, we have millions on kayo and on streaming and on facebook etc.  that doesn't help the cause so why do it.

God no.
73k is FTA, includeing 5 city metro and regionals.
The 55k is just 5 city metro.
Fox was only 18k (going off memory) - which is actually the highest Fox rating since the return of the A-League.

i didn't criticise you for posting the Kayo subscribers numbers --- which you wrongly suggested were boosted by the reintroduction of the HAL.

i criticised you for saying there were only a couple of thousand Foxtel subscribers --- which clearly, is wong.

Rugby
Fox:  Brumbies vs Reds, 62k
Fox: Chiefs vs Crusaders, 36k

I'll just add one thing, barely two years ago, we would have expressed concern at seeing a rating of 36k (which two NZ rugby sides achieved on Fox), but now, we'd celebrate such a number,

The super Rugby would appears to be going better this year. It would have to help them that there are no international teams.

elksy - 7 Aug 2020 8:15 PM

Foxtel is borderline dead in its current model as a whole. For the monthly value of foxtel you could subscribe yourself to Netflix, Stan, Disney and Amazon and still spend less. Along with that the younger people and younger adults are consuming more social media and streaming services.

I just dumped Foxtel this week (finally).

‘Foxtel saving AUS$180m in reduced sports rights,’ says News Corp CEO

....Speaking to investors, Thomson said that Foxtel’s campaign to re-evaluate and reset its rights spend in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic “was successful”, while Foxtel has experienced “increased profitability” despite disruption caused by the coronavirus.

“While negotiations with some sports continue, deals already completed will reduce the cost of sports rights at Foxtel by at least AUS$180 million over the next three years as compared to the prior contracted value,” Thomson said.

Adding: “The idea that things will suddenly turn to normal ... is absurd. It's not just the quantity of games, it's the quality of the experience, and that has obviously been diminished.”

......Meanwhile, Foxtel scrapped its AUS$57 million (US$39 million) per season deal with Football Federation Australia (FFA) to sign a revised one-year broadcast deal, reportedly worth almost half its pre-existing arrangement with the national soccer body, which was due to expire in 2023. According to the Australian Financial Review (AFR), the revised deal is now worth in the region of AUS$32 million (US$21.9 million). The deal covers both top-flight men’s A-League and women’s W-League campaigns through to the end of the 2020/21 season, though does not include the FFA Cup club knockout competition.....”

Last night's Fox ratings cut out at 34k with The Big Bang Theory.
With 2 games on, it was always unlikely we'd make it into the top 20.
It has been a very, very long time since we have made the top 20.

Personally, it's often too much in the one evening.
But realistically, over the next few years, more teams means more match clashes.
When the Premier League used to be on Fox, I can recall 5 or 6 of the 10 games of any given round were all on at the same time, you used to be able bring up a screen to see what games were on, and flick between them.

I will catch up on every game as a mini at some point, as well as UCL and EPL games. The only time I watch games live is if SFC is playing or I have nothing on and the game looks like it might be a good clash or has something riding on it. Or often I will have the game on in the background but be doing other things.

I’m not sure winter has had too much affect on the ratings. Reading through the thread we averaged 36k i think it was after 5-6 rounds on fox sports, then it just got worse and worse as the season went on. we were getting 16k for the big blue 8months ago.

what's the bet we get 55k on ABC tonight
has anyone met or knows anyone that participated
in these ratings?

yep, there was a lady at work who was doing it, she met a demographic they were looking for married with kids, and they got the box installed. I also thought she told me she got paid. Funny thing was she told me that at the start they knew they were being "monitored" and so were careful to watch only "smart" shows, then after a while they stopped caring and just watched whatever.
