I very much doubt if Antony went to Josep and said "I'm concerned we aren't going to be fit enough" that Josep would just drop him from the team.

If Josep explained why he thinks the teams fitness levels will be fine and Antony didn't accept it, then he has every right to not play him.

Having managed people in the past, perception can be very different from reality for both parties.

CASSIO'S gladiator-like performance in Saturday's 1-1 away draw with Perth Glory has put pressure on Socceroo Michael Zullo to regain the left back position this weekend.

But it's a different scenario for Antony Golec.

Golec hasn't seen a second of this A-League campaign after he was a preferred defender last season.

Reds coach Josep Gombau says Golec is his 'best defender' but lacks other attributes.

"The problem is we need to start from the back with the ball and he's (Golec) learning the style,'' Gombau said.

"He's a very good defender.

"In defensive actions he's even better than some of our players but in the style that we play, players need to make a lot of decision making.

"In the beginning (of preseason) he's been making a lot of mistakes in decision making.

"We are working with him he's getting better but it's still not at the level that the other players are playing. It's step by step, he's a player that has a good attitude, I am happy with him and he's a very good person."

But with the bizarre fixtures again pitting Melbourne Victory as a Reds opponent - for the second time in 36 days after Adelaide faced Glory for the second time in 34 days last weekend, Gombau has a hard decision to make ahead of the Etihad Stadium clash on Saturday.

Gombau says whether Zullo or Cassio is the right fit at left back for Victory is a predicament he prefers.

"It's my job it's not difficult to do this,'' Gombau said.

"I need to think what is the best with the team and to be honest with everybody and then the job of the coach is this.

"For me it's not a problem I want to have this problem every weekend.

"Like on Saturday I had Bruce Djite injured and we had to play the last minutes with (Jordan) Elsey upfront. If we had Djite we could have made a change before and we could have won."

Adelaide United have reportedly expressed interest in signing Socceroo Lucas Neill on a loan deal for the remainder of the season.

Cassio moved in and hardly skipped a beat in his first start since snapping a hip tendon in July.

The 33-year-old used every bit of his 15 professional years of experience at defending and attacking to keep Glory's Sidnei and Ryo Nagai quiet when they came up against the former Flamengo defender.

Cassio wasn't even expected to complete the 90 minutes in Perth but the belligerent left back stuck it out in Perth's searing heat.

Gombau, however, said Adelaide must fix its defensive problems after the Reds conceded its third goal from a corner this season when Glory's Chris Harold nodded in the equaliser in Perth.

And in the six matches this season Adelaide has not kept a clean sheet.

"I am happy with them but there are things we need to improve,'' Gombau said.

"We are making steps but I also found some mistakes that we are doing and we need to resolve it. Also in set pieces and these actions we need to improve."
