Hate to rain on a rant, but the reason Jamieson got done was because he made himself 'big' by putting his hands out beside him. If he was shielding his face or body or your arm is very close to your body when hit it's fine, you can't shield space in front or behind you though, if you do you are at risk of giving away a penalty. Your own lads benefited from this rule two years ago against us at Hindmarsh when Diego flicked the ball onto Vargas outstretched arm to get a penalty which tied the game up with 7 minutes to go.

Can't comment on the other incident as i didn't see it.

Highlight of the game, Red Army singing Twisted Sister's "We're not gonna take it".

Not Malicious but makes a strong point.

That is all! Win Lose or Draw I will still be there!

Almost identical to Jamo's, if he is going to not call it at one end of the park, then you don't call it at the other. But as we both know we aren't going to see any consistency out of the refs in the HAL any time soon ](*,)

Haha, i know that feeling.

Lia only stayed on the park on Friday because the ref suddenly felt like he'd give up his 'tough guy' approach to the game in the second half. There's nothing worse than a ref making a HUGE call then not having the gumption to back it up by making a similar call later in the game.

Fuck i miss Shield. He got paid out a lot but he was ruthlessly consistent if he saw an incident. Can't believe we basically lost him because of Danny Vukovic and a bunch of whining Mariners fans.

I know, Shield wasn't my favorite ref - but he was at least ruthless. Too often we are left with refs that are either useless, or Breeze

All players and supporters want is CONSISTENCY.
The ref from the Newie game must think it's something to do with honey Because that Jamo handball was a penalty, if you will not accept ball to hand, but there were at least 3 ball to hand incidents in the opposing box.
Fair enough he didn't give them, but then he shouldn't have given the one against Jamo.
Boy does the A-League need good refs or what!!

Confirmed?! If so that is almost too moronic for words. Marrone over Mullen at LB and a decent shout at either CB or RM. Hindmarsh must be in some sort of strange fantasy land. They should film Dr Who there.

No I can't confirm it but it's from a very reliable source.

I'm beginning to wonder about United. They sign Boogard yet let a young exciting player go????
They're becoming too similar to City for mine, that mob de-listed Alex Tobin and refused to give him a send-off game, even though he'd represented the National team 83x and was a proud shirt wearer for the club.
I was annoyed when United gave Ross Aloisi his marching orders, even though he was a REAL captain, who berated his troops the second he saw them not giving 100%!!!

Guys, the Champions League draw is about to start online:

http://www.the-afc.com/en/afc-champions-league-2010/afc-champions-league-2010-draw

No TV coverage as far as I can ascertain though.

Letting Mullen and Marrone go is just stupid. Marrone is a greater RB than Fyfe will ever be.

Say it isn't so Redcup. Marrone is simply one of my favourites and Daniel Mullen has always had my respect and deserves senior team action. Who is your source? If true, this will most certainly spell the end for AU not just this season, but also many more.

So guys, back to the ACL again next year.

We'll be drawn against Pohang Steelers, Shandong Luneng and the Japanese Emperor's Cup winner (TBA Jan 1, 2010).

* Pohang Steelers
We've demolished them before, but that was when we had a decent squad, and they had a fairly average squad. This year, Pohang won the ACL for the 3rd time in their history, so they'll be working on a high from that. They also came runners up in the K-League this year, and won their League Cup. This is by no means the same Pohang we saw off in 2008. We'll be lucky to get draws against them.

* Shandong Luneng
Chinese Super League teams are always unpredictable to play against. We've played against Shandong previously, and we are still apparently sister clubs with them. They finished 4th in the league this year, and third in their group stage of the ACL behind Gamba Osaka and FC Seoul. I personally think we have a good chance against them again this time around, and should manage at least a win and a draw against them.

* Emperor's Cup Winner (Vegalta Sendai/F.C. Gifu/Nagoya Grampus/Albirex Niigata/Shimizu S-Pulse)
Out of the five possible clubs, I would rate FC Gifu as the easiest of the lot - ranked mid-table of the second division. Whereas Sendai is top of the second division and will be promoted the first division next season. Niigata, Shimizu and Nagoya all sit mid-table in the first division - so would all make very tough challenges for us. No doubt we can rise to the challenge. Nagoya will present an even more exciting prospect as we'll go up against our very own Josh Kennedy in their ranks.

Overall, a tough draw, considering our current form. Melbourne have a much tougher draw against Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (KOR), Beijing Guoan (CHN) and Kawasaki Frontale (JPN). Let's all barrack for Seongnam against Melbourne, as we see Ognenovski exact some revenge for us! :p

Adelaide United face tough draw in AFC Champions League

Monday, 7 December 2009

Adelaide United FC will face some familiar foes while also having a sense of the unknown in the Group Stage of the AFC Champions League 2010 after the draw was held in Kuala Lumpur early this evening.

Drawn in Group H, the Reds’ third venture into Asia’s prestigious club competition sees them up against reigning AFC Champions League title holders, Korea Republic’s Pohang Steelers, China’s Shandong Luneng and the Emperor’s Cup Winner from Japan, which will be decided in January.

Adelaide United will open its AFC Champions League campaign with a blockbuster at Hindmarsh Stadium against Pohang on February 23/24 (dates TBC by the Asian Football Confederation).

The Reds drew Pohang in their group in 2008 and stunned the Korean powerhouse with a 2-nil win in Korea in Match Day 1 before claiming a 1-nil victory in the return leg en route to becoming the first Australian club to progress to the competition’s Knockout Stage.

China’s Shandong Luneng are also no strangers to United, having been the Reds’ first ever opponents in their debut AFC Champions League campaign in 2007. The Reds will host Shandong in the final round of the Group Stage, as the South Australian club looks to secure a place in the top two and progress through to the Round of 16.

Reds Coach Aurelio Vidmar admits it is a bonus heading to regions the club has been to and experienced before as United attempt to repeat the historic feats which saw Adelaide reach the Final in 2008.

“We’re really happy that we know a lot about where we’re going, Shandong and Pohang. Obviously the teams have changed since we last played them but we’ll certainly know the surroundings and what to expect so that’s a real positive,” Vidmar said.

“The AFC Champions League is a fantastic competition and I’m sure by the time February comes around everyone will be excited about getting ready to prepare for it’s always nice to see what group you’re in.”

“Obviously it’s a tough group but certainly we should draw some confidence knowing that we’ve been there before and done well.”

With J-League giants Gamba Osaka, Kawasaki Frontale and the Kashima Antlers already securing places in the AFC Champions League 2010, they cannot fill the vacant Japanese spot left in Adelaide United’s group if they happen to win the Emperor’s Cup.

Eight teams still remain in contention for the Emperor’s Cup so The Reds will have to wait until New Years Day for the final team in Group H to be finalised.

Both United and Melbourne Victory, Australia’s other representative in the competition, were grouped against clubs from Japan, China and Korea Republic for the Group Stage, which sees teams play each other home and away.

The top two teams from each group at the end of the six rounds progress to the Round of 16, which is a one off elimination match before the finals begin.

We'll be ok if we sort our team out by then and make smart buys with new players for the ACL.

Otherwise....it hurts to even think about it.

street slang ;)

but on a serious note, losing Marrone and Mullen will hurt this club for many years. It took us time to build the best defence in years gone by. That has crumbled to shit this year. I have strongly felt that Marrone and Mullen had a long properous future at our club. Both South Aussies too. They have always been in my fantasy AU team. I've been frantically calling friends and only 1 of them said he read about the rumour a week ago in the 'Tiser. It was brief and said "Marrone was in talks with Fury". Probably adds weight to what Redcup has reported on here.

Very sad times at AU. I read today we're getting in the sports psychologists to help our team. Reminds me of Metallica's "Some Kind of Monster" movie. At least that group actually made it.

Vidmar said in yesterday's Mail that he was used to players like Costanzo, Veart, Valkanis etc who would walk into the changerooms and break shit, throw shit when the team lost. This lot according to Vidmar are a lot more introverted. When i look at Dodd, i wonder if introverted should be replaced with disinterested.

I heard it from a guy who airs a show on radio, so it's " OUT THERE " in the free air, so I'm calling him a reliable source - although as nothing has come directly from the club I suppose we can call it a hot rumour for now.

We could surprise in the ACL. Last year no-one gave Newcastle a chance, yet they got out of their group while the more fancied CCM got taken to the cleaners and didn't win a game!

What's that King Billy? You want some good news? Please don't read this article then. It's about Petrillo completely shifting onus to Vidmar for player recruitment. To me it sounds like someone who doesn't want to be held accountable for decisions. I thought Football Directors had a major say on recruitment. Here he says it's all the coach's decision. He says it twice: "Vidmar is responsible". Adelaide Divided.

Adelaide United football director Michael Petrillo can see road to recovery

December 08, 2009.

Adelaide United football director Michael Petrillo acknowledged the club was in turmoil, but denied the Reds told strikers Cristiano and Lloyd Owusu's FIFA agent to offload the pair.

Petrillo said the Reds were negotiating for more players next month. Attracting Australian players based overseas and signing a South American during the January FIFA transfer window are high on Adelaide's wishlist, he said.

Petrillo said Owusu and midfielder Adam Hughes were not signed from DVDs but impressed officials during trials in Adelaide this year.

And he said coach Aurelio Vidmar was mainly responsible for recruitment.

"Lloyd wasn't signed from DVD," Petrillo said.

"He came out and trialled here, I wasn't here in Adelaide at the time. If I remember rightly he played against MetroStars and Para Hills in trial games.

"Adam Hughes trained with the team and the decision to sign him was based on that trial period."

Petrillo was North Queensland Fury's football director for three months this year.

He said United were intent on bolstering their squad in time for the club's third AFC Champions League campaign kick-off in February.

But unless the AFC changes its loan rules, the club won't be able to attract 2010 FIFA World Cup-bound A-Leaguers to Adelaide's Asian campaign.

"Any player that comes in during the January transfer window will only be coming in for the Asian Champions League," he said.

The AFC states that players on loan must sign a minimum six-month contract for the Champions League.

The ruling means United cannot add possible World Cup-bound A-League Socceroos Brisbane Roar's Craig Moore (Brisbane) and Perth's Jacob Burns or Mile Sterjovski to their 30-man squad.

The Reds could also be in dire straits with new Central Coast recruit Nigel Boogard.

The defender is unlikely to be added for the Champions League if the Mariners make the play-offs because players cannot be registered for two clubs simultaneously under FIFA rules.

"Ultimately the coach makes the final decision on the players being signed and Viddie will take that full responsibility," Petrillo said.

"The coach makes the final decision. At the end of the day Aurelio takes the responsibility."

Curico Unido's Argentinian import Marcos Flores has been revealed to be one of the targets according to FIFA agent Jose Martinez. Petrillo recently spent nearly a fortnight in South America on the recommendation of specialist coach Carl Veart, who witnessed potential future Reds players earlier this year.

But the football director said Vidmar would make the final decision despite being unable to see these players in the flesh.

"Carl went over to South America earlier this year and certainly Viddie's taken Carl's advice on his recommendations," he said.

"My trip was to have a look at other players and to further develop negotiations with one player in particular we would like to sign."

Meanwhile, United's promising defender Michael Marrone is tipped to join Fury on a two-year deal from June.

Marrone earned glowing accolades during the Reds' FIFA Club World Cup showing in Japan last year.

He is on the comeback trail after knee surgery earlier this season.

What the? What other role does Petrillo have at the club other than to source and secure players? Is this why he left NQF? Because they were so unhappy with his recruitment that they decided to get rid of him? Worked wonders for them I must say, once he was gone they started to bolster their squad!

It reads as a clear sign that responsibility for our woes will be placed at Viddie's doorstep as a Christmas present.

Viddie will get to open a nice present of Carry the Can? AUFC would be totally short sighted to do so. I am starting to get pissed off.

Now the crap is staring to come out. The coach is there to coach that is why we hire people to do scouting. Its not upto the coach to go out and find these players and yes it is his call in the end but its not his responsability he needed a stricker one came looked good so what choice did he have give him 3 to choose from.

for me petrillo needs to go and the ceo clean out needed urgently ffa do somthing please

ill happily go scout for players bet i could come up with some quality

All of a sudden, I'm actually looking forward to the January transfer window and the off season as we'll finally get to see some of the crap players potentially dropped and replaced with new faces. I sure hope Fyfe, Hughes and Pantelis disappear... I think that I've emphasised enough on that in recent months.

They scouted Shin... but have left him in the Youth League for the last 2-3 months... what's up with that? Monterosso was promoted from the Youth League squad, but he's still playing his trade in the NYL... what's up with that?

I've talked to a lot of AU supporters over the last couple of weeks and we all agree that Viddie will probably be considered redundant once the new owners come in.

I would like the new owners to come in and take out the board and see where that goes first. I think the pissant comment last season had more meaning then we know now no one is in charge
