Cassio a potential gift for Osieck Val Migliaccio The Advertiser August 17, 2011 12:00am CASSIO will hand Holger Osieck a rare gift for 2014 World Cup Socceroos qualifiers from July. The gift? A ready-made Aussie left back. While Osieck has been forced to juggle that position without the capabilities of Scott Chipperfield, who retired from national duty after the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Cassio is shaping as a dream for the German mentor. The Adelaide United defender is just one more bureaucratic step from becoming an Australian after Osieck used stopgaps Matt McKay and Michael Zullo at left back after David Carney was injured at the AFC Asian Cup earlier this year. Adelaide chairman Greg Griffin yesterday confirmed he had received a letter from government authorities updating Cassio's Australian status. Griffin stated Cassio had been granted permanent residency with one more hurdle to go before he is regarded as an Australian citizen which would free him up for international duty. "All that's missing now is the citizenship papers which will be lodged and an appointment for a test for Cassio," Griffin said. "It's great news - we'd like to see Cassio settle here in Adelaide permanently because he is so much an integral part of Adelaide United. Apart from his obvious brilliant playing capabilities, Cassio is one member of our club who can help us grow with his commitment to the state and the club." And Cassio's new status will also allow the Reds to sign another foreigner for Rini Coolen's impressive squad. According to club officials, Adelaide still has room on its roster for two players before the A-League season kicks off against Perth Glory away on October 9. Adelaide City's Ricardo da Silva is set to join the Reds once his Super League commitments are complete next month while the club has targeted a European defender who has been tracked for six months. Meanwhile, Coolen is expected to lose Dario Vidosic and Jon McKain to the Socceroos for the internationals against Thailand and Saudi Arabia next month after the pair were named in a provisional 32-man squad. Striker Serginho van Dijk is also on standby for Indonesian World Cup duty. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/ipad/cassio-a-potential-gift-for-osieck/story-fn6bqphm-1226116286736Quote:Adelaide City's Ricardo da Silva is set to join the Reds once his Super League commitments are complete next month while the club has targeted a European defender who has been tracked for six months.

Road to 2012 London Olympics starts in Adelaide
Football Federation Australia (FFA), the South Australian Government and Football Federation South Australia (FFSA) today announced that the Qantas Australian Under 23’s will play their first 2012 London Olympic Games Asian Qualifier against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide on Wednesday 21 September (kick-off 7:00pm). Adelaide born, bred and based, Qantas Australian Under 23’s Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar was looking forward to getting his team’s campaign off to a good start on home soil. “The results of our home matches will have a large bearing on whether we qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games, so it is extremely important for us to get a positive start in our first match against the UAE,” said Vidmar. “Personally, I have plenty of great memories here at Hindmarsh Stadium, so it is a great advantage for us to play our opening match of the Third Round here in Adelaide. “We’ll also have a good 10-day training camp in Adelaide in the lead-up to the match to make sure we are fully prepared to start our campaign,” concluded Vidmar. The South Australian Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister, Tom Kenyon, was proud that Hindmarsh Stadium would host the Qantas Australian Under 23’s opening match of their 2012 London Olympic Games qualification campaign. “This game will be the first step in ensuring that this team will be able to represent Australia in the Men’s Football competition at next year’s London Olympics. “The last time we saw the Olyroos in Adelaide was back in May, 2007 in a qualifier for the Beijing Olympics when they downed Iran 3-1 in front of more than 6,300 spectators, so let’s hope we see a similar result next month. “It will be a great opportunity for South Australian football fans and sports fans alike to support the Australian team and I’m sure the crowd at Hindmarsh Stadium will get right behind the Olyroos and create an electric atmosphere,” Mr Kenyon said. FFSA CEO Michael Carter also welcomed international football to South Australia and the positive effects that such a match will have on the local football community. “It’s fantastic to see international football being played here in South Australia so soon after the Qantas Socceroos were here. “It’s also a great opportunity for our junior footballers and their families to see one of our national team’s close up as they embark on their Olympic Games qualification campaign. “I’m sure that the South Australian Football Family will come out and support our boys for this important match against the UAE,” concluded Carter. The Qantas Australian Under 23’s are drawn in Group B, with Iraq, Uzbekistan, and the UAE, for the third round of the Asian Qualifiers for the London 2012 Olympic Games men’s football tournament. The venues and kick-off times for the remaining matches of the Qantas Australian Under 23’s campaign are expected to be confirmed by the AFC in the near future. Asia are allotted 3.5 slots for the London 2012 Olympic Gamers men’s football tournament. The winner of each group from the third round will automatically progress to next year’s Olympic Games. The three second-placed teams from the third round will clash in a playoff at a centralised venue from 25 to 29 March, 2012, and the winner of this group will then meet the representatives of CAF (Africa) for a berth at the Olympic Games. Ticketing details for the match will be released shortly. http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/2009MensU23/default.aspx?s=aus_u23men_newsfeatures_news_display_new&id=40636

Just thinking (and this maybe obvious to everyone) but if Serge plays for Indonesia (so is an Indonesian citizen) does that mean we can claim him as our Asian player under the 3+1 AFC rule? Therefore we can recruit another international player?

Nope, because he still counts as a visa spot for the HAL - Cassio getting his citizen ship frees up another spot for us but still leaves us the same problem we face in the ACL of 1 of our visa players missing out.

Uh? how does it work then with any Asian player? Don't they all need a Visa to play/work here?

A-League = 5 foreign players (doesn't matter if they're Asian or not) ACL = 3+1 (3 foreigners + 1 Asian player) If Serg becomes an Indonesian player, we can claim him as our Asian player in the ACL (when we qualify), but he still comes under the 5 foreigner rule in the A-League. Having said that, I hope the A-League doesn't cut back the number of foreign players per club for 2012/13.

I understand your point but I believe it would be more ideal if the A-League was aligned with the ACL in terms of import rules. The FFA needs to eventually introduce the 3+1 rule for the A-League, but it wont be able to happen for a couple of years. Perhaps if they phased it out, allowing current contracts to run but not allowing new contracts if a team have an excessive number of imports...

I don't see the need to enforce a lower number of foreign players per club. If a club doesn't want to, or can't afford to recruit their allocated number of foreign players, so be it.
As for the ACL, having more than the 3+1 is an advantage for any A-League team in the comp. It means that the players will be playing for their inclusion in the ACL squad = more competition for starting berths. The other benefit is that when the FFA Cup starts up, we'll always have a fresh import to take part in the local competition at the same time the ACL is going.

Happy to read in this mornings Sunday Mail of the fortuitous conflict between the Redbacks and United in October of this year that will prevent the Owners of United from c*cking up royally and moving the home game against the tards from Hindmarsh to Adelaide Oval. With the tards landing HK, this now means the only way to guarantee a seat to see that particular game is to buy a season ticket:) I hate AdOval for football with a passion. I'd much rather see the Reds play all games, especially big rivalry games at fortress Hindmarsh. There has to be a way to let the owners know that we as fans hate watching football at an oval venue when we already play at the countries best football-only venue. Full Houses at Hindmarsh can only be good for brand United:) If we make money at the 'marsh, a full house ought to be great for the bottom line and better in the long run, esp if the glory hunters have to shell out on a ST to get into the Kewell games;)

ADELAIDE United's Evgeniy "Lev" Levchenko believes gay footballers should not fear coming out. Heterosexual Levchenko became an advocate for gay rights after he was saddened by the suicide of ex-Adelaide City striker Justin Fashanu. "I'm sure there are a lot of football players ... and with that there are gay football players," said Levchenko who was voted the 2009 Esquire Best-Dressed Footballer. "But they they won't come out because they're scared. "I know many of them don't live a normal life and that is the issue. "You don't have to do it (come out) - but do it if you want to." Fashanu - a former Norwich and Manchester City forward - took his life in 1998 in London after becoming the first Premier League player to publicly declare his homosexuality. Levchenko had a chance to stand up for gay rights when he was asked to feature as a model for Dutch magazine L'Homo in May alongside Dutch sports stars who were quoted on why homosexuality should be accepted in all walks of life. "People in the Netherlands are quite open about it (being gay)," Levchenko said. "But still in soccer you don't have football players who can say "OK, I'm gay" for example." Levchenko said he became empathetic towards gay players after one of his colleagues told the Ukrainian in confidence of his intimate feelings before publicly admitting he was homosexual. Levchenko said the player was now much happier after making the confession. "I supported him before he made the step and he said "you know, for me it was just like living 25 years in prison," Levchenko said. "So I understood him ... yeah, he was hiding all of his feelings and emotions all of his life." The new Adelaide United signing hails from the Ukraine and spent more than 15 years playing professionally in the Netherlands. While fashion and soccer are his passions, the Ukraine international is just the second Red along with Socceroo Dario Vidosic to host his own website. He says the web is an ideal way for fans and friends to connect, and enjoys social networking with Facebook and Twitter. But one thing he does miss is the open roads of the German autobahn where he would go whenever he had time away from Dutch football. Levchenko owned a Porsche 911 in the Netherlands but since he landed in Adelaide, Levchencko has discovered his penchant for speed must be made in a controlled environment. Law student and Porsche owner Oliver Sheahan, 21, yesterday encouraged Levchenko to join the 2009 Porsche Club champion in some laps around Mallala Motorsport Park. "I like speed so much, and I do have a fast car in Holland," Levchenko said. "In Holland I used to drive to Germany and get up to 260 or 270 km/h on the autobahn which is quite safe because they have the right roads for it." Levchenko also has a penchant for chocolate. "My second-favourite thing is chocolate and I really enjoy that over here," he said. "I've been to more than 60 countries and I have taken chocolate from everywhere. "Over here I visited Haighs and I also visited Cocolat in Rundle St. "It was very nice." http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/stars-life-in-the-fast-lane/story-e6frecj3-1226117755790Edited by waggzzz2: 21/8/2011 11:39:45 AM
