Hi Graham,

Since you call this an article and not an opinion piece I assume you have sources that you independently verified prior to writing this piece of 'journalism'?

How do you feel about the $100 million that our state government had pledged to the upgrading of Football Park? Since it is $25 million more than what our federal government has pledged to the FFA's bid for the largest sporting event in the world you must be even more against it than our bid for the World Cup?

I take it the composed and mature way the Socceroos qualified for only our 3rd World Cup appearance, and first back to back qualification, was not of high enough quality for you? Upon what do you base this attack on the abilities of the Australian National Football team and it's coach?

I understand you believe that being in the top 30 most attended sporting competitions in the world is not good enough, is in fact a failure. So why do you not level the same charge at the NRL which has similar levels of live spectator viewing? Or at the domestic cricket competition who could only dream of having the viewing numbers that the HAL has?

And what do you consider a crowd of football stories? 3? Maybe 4? Thankfully due to the internet those of us actually interested in the sport do not have to rely on, in any way, the tiny number of football articles published in our daily rags.

What is your basis for determining that FTA networks are not interested in bidding for the HAL in competition with Fox? Have you canvassed the FTA networks and are able to provide backup for this assertion?

I assume that no other sporting clubs in Australia have ever had to seek financial aid from their sports governing body before. Certainly not any AFL clubs... oh wait, they have.

As for the FFA going head to head with the other codes? I can tell from the press releases made by the various participants in this 'debate' that the only code going head first at anyone is in fact the AFL. The NRL can see the benefits of the World Cup coming to Australia, it appears only the AFL cannot.

As for our chances at wining the bid? I would love to hear about your correspondence with those who actually influence the bid prospects of the various nations.

Overall your article comes across as an opinion piece. It does not provide background or corroboration for the assertions that are made in it and therefore it is by its very nature inaccurate and misleading.

I do enjoy some of your work and would be truly upset to not have your voice as part of the dialogue which occurs in our sporting landscape. I would prefer though that you do not pretend that your opinion is fact.

Regards,

Jeremy

And in case you haven't noticed, The Advertiser describe me as a

Thanks for your reply Graham,

Just with regard to the HAL crowds, you are of course aware that more people have watched live this year than last year? Yes the average crowd figure is under 10,000, but total crowd figures are higher than last year. Is that a truth you are willing to acknowledge? It is unfortunate that you feel that you were presenting facts in your opinion piece. It would be nice if you could have provided evidence for them in order to back up your assertions.

Do you remember the Olympics in Sydney? How Cathy Freeman's magnificent achievement lifted our nation? I would expect no less from the World Cup, that you believe that this could never occur is a sad indication of the faith that you hold in Australia and our ability to achieve greatness.

Good luck for the future Graham, I at least have not decided that a sport I enjoy following is under any threat of extinction - which appears to be your fear. If I was you I would be welcoming the World Cup with open arms, confident in the knowledge that Australian Rules football will be still around and just as strong as before the World Cup, just with Australia itself having received greater exposure. I find that attitude is a more open one than the blind dismissal of another nation building event.

Jeremy

I am quite impressed he is willing to reply, my initial email was quite heated as I sent it immediately after reading his article. Actually I have noticed it isn't here. So find it below:

Graham Cornes wrote:
Graham Cornes: The great Cup con

Article from: December 12, 2009 01:05am

WHAT if this whole 2018 World Cup soccer bid is one giant con? What if we have absolutely no chance of winning the bid that has promised our nation a river of untold wealth. What if all those tourist dollars and economic development never flow?

Of course, we have been sold the dream, and it's the dream are we prepared to pay millions for. Our Prime Minister has fallen for it and has committed millions of taxpayers' money. We dare not question the dream. To do so would be un-Australian.

Someone has to.

What if it is just one big publicity stunt to promote a football code that is struggling to establish itself at a domestic level? We have loved Australia's involvement in previous World Cups - indeed the euphoria of the qualification process and the drama of that penalty shoot-out against Uruguay in Sydney rarely has been equalled in Australian sport. Ominously, however, most of us have barely noticed we already have qualified for next year's World Cup in South Africa.

For all the hype and free kicks soccer has been given in Australia, particularly since the establishment of the A-League, it has failed in the three critical areas of attendances, television ratings and club profitability.

Given the enormous press coverage of the game, relative to its crowds and television ratings, it must be disturbing to the FFA that more people don't attend.

Indeed if the attendances of the competition's most successful team, the Melbourne Victory, in the sports-mad Victorian capital are taken out of the equation, the soccer attendances look pretty sick.

The press coverage that soccer enjoys is boosted by media cross-ownership. If you own a newspaper and half of a pay-television network, as at News Limited, it makes good sense to cross-promote and ensure the sports pages are crowded with soccer stories. Despite that, attendances continue to be disappointing and pay-TV ratings are nothing special. Certainly they are not strong enough for the free-to-air networks to pursue.

The financial plight of the clubs also must concern the FFA which has been forced to take over the administration of several of the competition's clubs.

World Cup qualification ensures a significant revenue stream, but you cannot keep throwing good money after bad.

What soccer does do very well in this country is PR. Ben Buckley, the FFA's chief executive, is disarmingly charismatic, accessible and frank. It helps he comes from an Aussie Rules background and has many friends in the sporting world. His head of corporate and public affairs, Bonita Mersiades, is similarly accessible and helpful.

The only key figure who is difficult for the media to access is the chairman of the FFA board, Frank Lowy - perhaps understandably given he is Australia's richest man.

Apart from that, soccer's PR leaves many of the other codes for dead. It's particularly noticeable here in Adelaide, where, despite the great relationship the media has with the AFL clubs, Adelaide United's media and communications manager, Dom Rinaldo, is unsurpassed in his output, assistance and accessibility. The FFA's public relations expertise, however, is being sorely tested as it goes head to head with the other football codes who are being asked to put their seasons on hold and give their best stadiums to soccer if the bid is successful.

Football and rugby league will not lie down without a fight or without significant compensation. Additionally state governments are being asked to promise massive upgrades to existing stadiums. Still Western Australia and the ACT yet have to commit to FFA approved stadiums. Unlike the other rival bidders who are able to clearly state on their websites which stadiums will be used in a successful bid, the FFA only can speculate. Lowy and Buckley are convinced the national characteristics that won us the Olympic Games may be enough to win soccer's greatest tournament.

Security, lifestyle, space and hospitality are important when presenting any bid, but soccer, over any sport, is more about politics than those qualities.

Our chances compared with the other bidders in the northern hemisphere are slim at best.

Still, win or lose the World Cup bid, soccer still will win. How many other sports will have that much government money spent on their promotion?

He actually was the inaugral coach of the crows aussie-rules team.
He was replaced by another South Australian " sporting great " ( in other words a bloke who only played aussie-rules ) - Malcolm Blight.

These guys are ignorant as they know a lot about aussie-rules and as they are considered " sporting greats " are given carte blanche { sorry no uumlauts available } to say whatever they want with no fact checking at all by the Murdoch press.

Case in point: Today Geoff Roach trumpeted the fact that a Sudanese lad had been signed by North Melbourne, and went on to say that no other sport had done this.
Of course we could all cite Kofi Danning as having represented Australia, but as it's not aussie-rules these clowns are oblivious to that fact.

Yeah, I remember him playing after he retired. He's obviously a fit guy and I agree with you, but it's a lot of guys with big media profiles; like Eddie McGuire, Sam Newman, Roy Masters - actually there are way too many to try and list.

Hey I was on FiveAA two weeks ago when I spoke to Don Rinaldo and Travis Dodd during their weekly segmant with Rowey and Cornsey.

I mentioned to Travis Dodd if he would like to see a Cup competition with A-League and State League sides and Graham Cornes butted in and said this would be great to see.

There's a headline: Graham Cornes would like to see an FFA Cup competition.

Redeye, you're firing at the moment, Mate! Spreading the Christmas cheer? :d

I hope that we have something to celebrate after tonight. It's litmus time. Will we hold our nerve and play to win from the first kick rather than try and save the game after going down again? Will we go with youth, passion and pace?

I predict a shortage of fingernails tonight, offset by good beer sales.

ADELAIDE United's Eugene Galekovic is on the verge of booking a Socceroos squad ticket to the South African World Cup next year.

Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek appears set to call up the A-League's No 1 shot-stopper for Asian Cup duty for his third cap on Tuesday when he announces the national team to visit Kuwait on January 6.

Galekovic is in the box seat to win one of the three World Cup keeper positions behind Fulham's Mark Schwarzer.

Verbeek's No. 2 Henk Duut will be in the Hindmarsh stands tonight assessing Galekovic and possibly Fabian Barbiero's form in the Reds' clash against Wellington Phoenix.

Verbeek is understood to be impressed by Barbiero's box-to-box ability while Galekovic appears to be an international certainty next month.

The latest Socceroos squad will be a mixed bag for Verbeek, with the Dutchman tipped to opt for A-League players and a backbone of European-based Australians for the must-win Kuwait clash to ensure 2011 Asian Cup qualification.

The Socceroos are second in the AFC's Group B, level with Kuwait (seven points) and a win clear of third-placed Oman.

Galekovic did not want to discuss the future, preferring to talk about having a quiet shift for a change tonight.

The reigning Goalkeeper of the Year has saved 60 shots this season - the second highest shot-stopping tally behind Central Coast keeper Danny Vukovic (61).

Galekovic's six brilliant saves last weekend in a 1-0 away win over Brisbane Roar were the catalyst for the Reds' win.

"Hopefully it's a bit quieter," Galekovic said.

"Hopefully we can put in another good performance like we did last week, work hard and perform well.

"It's a different game and hopefully we can be attacking and score a few more goals."

However, Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar said skipper Travis Dodd was under an injury cloud for tonight's clash.

Vidmar said Dodd's calf injury would be assessed after training last night.

Paul Reid was a 50/50 proposition for the clash after he missed most of this week's training because of an adductor injury, while Barbiero should be fit to resume after a groin injury lightened his training load this week, Vidmar added.

"We'll assess that through the last training session," Vidmar said.

Vidmar alluded to sticking to the second half back-three who handed Adelaide a clean sheet last weekend, meaning Mark Rudan and Robert Cornthwaite will be on the outer for the second consecutive match after the pair were handed last weekend off.

Iain Fyfe, Daniel Mullen and Michael Marrone could take up arms in the heart of defence after Vidmar's 3-4-3 formation struck gold against Roar.

And if Reid and Dodd fail to pass fitness tests, the door will seemingly open for an earlier-than-planned return to the squad for axed pair, vice-skipper Lucas Pantelis and Adam Hughes.

It's like mum lovingly packing school lunch for her child. That's what it feels like!

- Pull out the sacred red scarfe from the top draw
- Check wallet for membership card
- Pack a warm sweater just in case those Westerly breezes show up
- Throw AU "rain coat" from season 06/07 membership pack in glove box in case Easterly rain shows up
- Spray a couple shots of Rhinocort up my nose in case Northerly dust winds show up
- Walk out the front door whistling favourite tune*

* I can't whistle, but it helps paint the picture of my Friday morning ritual. Everything else is true!
