Overall I was quite happy with how we played last night. We attacked and although we came away with a draw, I think Wellington deserved that after all their persistence. The silly thing is, we STILL can't hang on to a lead. I don't know if it was just me, but after Alemao scored our sexy goal, did it look like the boys were told to sit back a bit? I guess that helps with composure, but that's not good against an attacking lineup like Wellington's.
In retrospect, we could have won the match 2-0 or even 3-0, but lack of classy finishing again screwed us over.

Hi RU. No question we should have won. We dominated most of the game. Wasteful again. So were they, but on balance it was a home win that went begging. Probably could have been 5-4 if either team had connected well.
I thought Viddie set the team up beautifully but got the subs completely wrong. Wrong people. Wrong time. Unless Cassio was injured WHY take him off? Why have no defensive cover? Leckie was finished after 60 mins but stayed on for 90. The kid is carrying an injury.
Still, it was an exciting, fast-paced game. Plenty of errors but plenty of creativity. Cannot believe the first half is being reported as 'dull'!! We blitzed them - albeit with that impending sense of doom we're so used to. Total dominance but no goals. Shit!
As a fan I really enjoyed being there through it all. The people around me were all desperate for us to play well but no-one seemed to expect we would. That's sad. When we scored that old 'Hindmarsh Fever' crackled around the ground again. That was sweet. Then the inevitabale stuff-up happened. Such a shame that Leckie and Barbs (two of our best) had to fall over each other. Not quite sure where Alamao was. It was his position. But the run accross wasn't blocked and then, deeper and darker, Hugene copped a sucker punch.
Not our year but there were decent signs. Just wish that Hughes had been left out and either Rudes or Flakes had been there to cover when Marrone got hurt. Poor Hughes, I thought it was disgusting when people booed his entry to the field. The guy is disappointing but he tries. He's just not got it. Scuffed a real chance after stepping over another because he wasn't aware enough of the possibility of a pass.
Shin looked bright but all too late. And why the fuck do we not give Monterosso at least a half?! He knows how to score. Cristiano was good last night but he slows down after half-time.
Still, it's our team and we'll see it through. Always light around the corner.

In retrospect, we could have won the match 2-0 or even 3-0, but lack of classy finishing again screwed us over. Yeah good lineup, But same ol', same ol' - no strikers. How Pantelis missed from 11 metres with only the keeper in front of him sums up a season with the lowest goals for in the league, and why the ball wasn't played on the deck more in the Nix's box is anyones guess. I agree JD why Viddy didn't replace an injured Leckie with Monty just after Alamao's stunner is a mystery of the universe. I feel so sorry for Cristiano alone, just waiting for help from AM's, but he is much better @ holding the ball up than Owusu ( although with O's size you have to scratch your head ) speaking of which did he get an early Christmas minute? Still all was not lost as I watched the unbridalled enthusiasm of Africa XI. The speed of those boys and their little tricks was impressive, but structure and a tighter mob was their undoing. If these kids stay in Adelaide our future is looking brighter, and a couple of those State kids as well, I liked the look of that mohican wearing defender. Why people boo is beyond me. I think they are composed of a lot of people who've never played the game. As an ex-striker I know you ALWAYS give everything and putting the ball in the back of the net is always your goal - pun intended. Edited by redcup: 19/12/2009 02:14:02 PM

Viddie and Stubbins were in the western stand in front of me watching the Africa v FFSA game and seemed to be impressed by some of what they saw. I was looking at the ladder this morning, and it's official - we can't score for shit. 16 goals in 19 matches. The next lowest scoring team is North Queensland with 20 - even they have managed to get at least a goal per game average.

G'day Stephen, like i said last week when we were discussing our fantasy AU team: Cassio would always start and finish in my team. He's creative. He has a go. He's not a coward. He also plays with such passion for the red shirt. He's always applauding the crowd. His background coming from Brazil must have certainly helped.. understanding that the fans are the reason you're getting paid to play. jessesdad wrote: Still, it was an exciting, fast-paced game. I thought the first half was boring... bar a few great runs from Jamo and Cassio. The left hand side is so much stronger when they're working it together. I felt right up until Alemao's goal the atmosphere was very weak. The AU fans are expecting to lose it seems. I feel very bad for Eugene. That was not the right night to stuff up life that. Still there was no defender there in front of him. How the ball caught the inside of his foot and deflected in has got me dazed. It simply was bad luck. jessesdad wrote:

Agree on your subs suggestion and assessment of Shin and Monterosso. Cristiano i thought looked tired and uninspired for most of the game. He looks like a man who has been told he's not gonna be here next season. As for Hughes, I booed when he was brought on. You can't really expect me to cheer though can you? He's a clutz. Did you see that golden chance he had to seal the game? My grandma can kick harder than that... and she's dead. Ultimately it was a boo aimed at Vidmar. Hughes can only do what Hughes does. Vidmar is the man that keeps selecting him all the bloody time. Vidmar chooses him over anyone else. Vidmar is the one applauding his "work rate". It was only a matter of time that the fans would express themselves that way. We've given it 17 previous games to make it work and it has failed every time.

After watching this morning's Pohang v Atlante replay, I have a new found fear of the Korean side in our group stage of next year's Champions League. :(

They only beat Mzembe by 1 goal and then Mzembe got beaten by Auckland by 1 goal, so theoretically by those results they're only as good as a part-time side that plays long-ball British style. :d Edited by redcup: 20/12/2009 04:11:31 PM

Interesting article from the Advertiser. If the $ numbers below are to be believed, and i strongly feel they are, then it is an absolute disgrace to lose Marrone for $60,000 a year. How could AU not see his value? How could Stubbins come out and admit it was " probably looking [like a mistake]" after the Brisbane game? The Advertiser wrote:
Marrone shows why he'll star - for Fury
VAL MIGLIACCIO
..ADELAIDE United coach Aurelio Vidmar should have been treading on eggshells after outstanding utility Michael Marrone was cut loose and snapped up by North Queensland Fury.
Instead the reigning Coach of the Year was happily singing the praises of Friday night's man of the match, despite allowing Marrone a debatable leave pass at the end of the season.
Adelaide-born Marrone again proved during United's 1-1 draw with Wellington Phoenix at Hindmarsh that he will be a massive loss to the Reds in 2010.
"I thought he (Marrone) was outstanding," Vidmar said. "We thought we'd put him on as a holding midfielder, more or less to man-mark.
"He did that but he did some amazing things going forward and he was unlucky not to score in the first half."
Marrone's puzzling exit to the Fury mirrors Matthew Kemp's departure to Melbourne Victory after the Reds' 2007 distressing grand final loss to Victory.
Now Kemp - the adopted South Australian - is one of the first players who dual premiership-winning coach Ernie Merrick pencils into his weekly line-up because, quite simply, he's too good to leave off the team sheet.
It's understood Marrone - on a minimum $45,000 one-year salary contract this campaign - was granted permission to head north after Fury offered the utility more than $60,000 per season.
Marrone, 22, has the potential to be the Reds' catalyst towards making the play-offs before taking up a two-year deal in June. He produced a braveheart display of courage last Friday.
The Reds' yo-yo season has forced Vidmar to be bold in his selections over the past few weeks.
Marrone has seemingly won the battle to stay put with Paul Reid (adductor) set to be again out of action for Sunday's away clash against Sydney FC.
Mathew Leckie's youthful exuberance was a thorn in Wellington's side while Iain Fyfe displayed why he is better suited to the stopper's position than full back.
Vidmar suggested that the team turned the corner after he swung the axe to oust defenders Mark Rudan and Robert Cornthwaite, Adam Hughes and vice-captain Lucas Pantelis from the first XI before his side beat Brisbane Roar 1-0 away nine days ago.
Rudan's contract extension talks beyond 2010 have stalled, while Cornthwaite is due to appear in court this week to answer charges of assault and withholding information from police.
Rudan will be up for AFC Champions League squad selection after surpassing the minimum number of games required in his contract to gain an extension until the end of the Asian campaign

Has everyone gone on holidays already? Sorry the blog's not up guys. I got it in a bit late and there were already four up today. ](*,) Not that it's necessarily worth waiting for. Still, a bit of chat before we indulge in Christmas pudding and then move on to our next date with destiny, eh?

I'm still around, my holidays start from Christmas Day. :p
What I'm waiting for is our management problems to be finalised. And more news on Marcos Flores - coz we haven't heard anything else since he signed with us.
EDIT: Congrats to Jamieson and Galekovic being selected for the Asian Cup qualifier. :D

Well mate I'm always on holiday's down here by the beach. However on the neg. side I haven't got any money for a " real " holiday, and on the pos. side I'm feeling slightly confident against Syd-knee. Just off the top of my head, Adelaide's away form has been better away than @ " fortress Hindmarsh " - hasn't it? :?

Toss of the coin I'd say, redcup. Home or away we seem to always be 'almost' the team we love. But the New Year is almost upon us and things are looking brighter.
A 'real' holiday? They're few and far between my friend.
Sydney? They'll think this one is in the bag but I predict an upset.
Well, one of us will be upset. ;)

I just had to laugh when I got home from work last night. Earlier in the morning I received an email from the Melbourne Heart syndicate regarding when they expect to make an announcement on their name, jersey colours etc. I had a whinge to my mate about the fact that we’ve had zero communication from AU. And then I got home from work and found a letter from “Hindmarsh” ! Yay… there was ACL fixture information and also news on the new AU Junior Academy. Cool. Then there was a whole section dedicated to AU merchandise for sale for the Xmas season. Fantastic work AU. Sending members a Xmas catalogue on the 23rd December. As a man who’s spent nearly a decade in Sales & Marketing, that is just embarrassing. Happy holidays everyone.

LOL, yeah I got that letter yesterday as well. It sucks that I won't be able to purchase the 3 game ACL tickets, since I won't be in Adelaide for the last home game against Shandong. :( Oh well, time to consider buying Red or Gold tickets for ACL now...

I mean, if the club wanted to go 100% electronic, i'd support that. But the fact is, like they've done in previous years, the club has forked out a few thousand $$ to print all those brochures and post them. The least they could have done is sent them out last week. They have very little cash as is and they go shoot themselves in the foot. Really poor.

Well this is a first since i've been a 442 visitor... 5 full days on the AU thread without a single post. Is everyone away on holidays or are you well and truly over it?
Our season's over but if we lose Eugene, we can kiss the ACL goodbye also.

I've been distracted by a sad git calling himself Mr. Football. I've been trying to work out his real hidden agenda, and I think I've almost cracked it. :-s :-s
When does Flores start with United. I was hoping it'd be against GC, but Viddy probably would let him twiddle his thumbs and INSIST on Hughes wasting space til season's end.
if WE draw a long bow and actually believe the Sun, things don't look to good! I've never been a fan of Birighitti, too show ponyish for me. I like big, strong wall-like keepers - like Beltrame

We used to ask the same about Flakes but at least Flakes always showed hints of some sort of footballing prowess (and still shows only hints dammit). I was at a preseason game with AU vs Metro, the one where we had the two Victorian lads trying out in the back line and both of them looked better than Hughes or Fyfe. Why do we have to sign the brummy players? Richard

Edited by redcup: 30/12/2009 04:54:56 PM You're not a fan of Mark ey? Interesting. Mark may need to mature a little... and i say that with all due respect to him because he seems like a good kid with a real positive future. But i've seen the faces he pulls on the bench when the camera focuses on him. I remember a few games back when he was subbed off in the 2nd half of the Baby Reds game. He was jogging off and yelled out to Lloyd who was a few metres forward from the halfway line.... he called out " Lloyd"... " Lloyd"... After the 2nd shout, Owusu looked at him and Mark just waved to him! lmao... it was funny for me. I don't know if it was a gesture of comraderie/goodwill as Lloyd is looked up to favourably by the juniors, or if Mark was just stuffing around, but it does highlight that he may be a year or 2 away from being stopper #1 for AU. I like him though and i would shout him a dinner if he ever stops a Kevin Muscat penalty. Edited by redeyerob: 30/12/2009 07:05:00 PM
