+xPoor crowd by Victory. AU vs Sydney got just under 13k tonight (can’t remember exact figure) which is really good especially considering the 36ers were playing next door at the same time. Adelaide v Smurfs 12,859 Wanderers v Perth 9,971 Total attendance this round so far is 38,099. And today could be poor Melbourne city v Macarthur Mariners v Brisbane

Round 4 of the 2023-24 A-league Mens season was attended by 48,612 people at an average of 8,102 per game (35% capacity)
This season has been attended by 197,999 people at an average of 8,250 per game (28% capacity). This is down 4% on the same time in 2022

I was there and it felt like 15,000+. but you have to say its a disappointing number. People like me complain about the lack of Friday night home games. we get one and people don't turn up. Beautiful weather. We have no excuses. On another note, there is some really strange fixturing going on. We just had 3 consecutive home games now only have 1 more before Xmas. Sydney just had 3 away games in a row. WU started with 3 away games and now have 3 home games (and why isn't Tarneit ready yet???).

What average attendance per round would be deemed non embarrassing?
Are we trying to match AFL figures? Are we trying to match NRL figures? Are we trying to match leagues similar to ours such as the K-League?
K-league has an average of 10k - with double the population.
Nothing wrong with our 8.5k average.- sure it could and probably should be better.
Gotta make sure the product looks good on TV.

Easy to point the finger at expansion clubs, but in reality the established clubs have far less excuses for not having better numbers. People will often point the finger at the FA/APL and broadcasters, but at the end of the day football is a club based sport and it's the main responsibility of individual clubs to get bums on their seats. Pretty much all clubs should be doing more in that department.

Macarthur were just inserted.
Compare to when Western Sydney Wanderers came in, there was heavy engagement at association level. There were surveys sent to coaches/managers and local club officials about team name, club colours from what i remember. I think that anyone from the Western Suburbs of Sydney could have a say.
Compare that to the bastardry of Fox Sports insisting that it had to be a new Sydney franchise. At the time, the FFA told 2 bids to merge and pissed off the Southern Sydney bid because the Smurfs were pissed off with it.
Macarthur Bullsh1tters were never organic so highly unlikely to succeed.

+xThey need to make sure a men's or women's team play at home once a weekend This is a new thought bubble that crossed my mind recently too. I can't get to ALW games because i don't have the time to get to 2 games in one weekend (plus the misso wouldn't be impressed). I would be more likely to watch the ALW team if they were playing at home on weekends when the men are playing away. I'm sure I am not alone in that regard.

Expansion just creates 2 more mid-table teams This dilutes what little existing competitive interest that survived the season before That contributes to the downturn, but not having relegation jeopardy is the real driver.

Honestly think the average we have now is a miracle considering there is zero media traction. Second division will dilute things even further.

These figures are a disgrace and an embarrassment. There is simply little if any coverage of the A-Leagues (M and W) in any main stream media. Why not? What are Football Australia, the APL and the individual clubs doing about it? Do they even have marketing departments? Melbourne and Sydney each have populations of about 5 million, each has 3 A League clubs and yet neither the Age nor the SMH EVER has any coverage. They have jumped on the Matilda's bandwagon, they report on European football, they report on alleged crowd behavior issues (while ignoring the antics in the ARL and the AFL) but never on the A Leagues. Is it because they still perceive it to be a game played by 'sheilas wogs and poofters' or because there is no promotion from our governing bodies? I do not recall ever seeing any significant or meaningful coverage of the A-Leagues on any free to air TV news programs and never any advertisements for the upcoming games. Even the season launch is an underwhelming understatement that gets no media coverage Even the A-League men's 2 live broadcasts are on the secondary 10 channel. Where is the highlights show? There is a reason Coca Cola and MacDonald's dominate the fast food/snack food markets. It is not because of the quality of the product, it is because there is saturation advertising. The AFL and the League morons have saturation coverage all year round (the League often for the wrong reason). Is it any wonder that there is crowd interest when we know what is happening. I'd bet that the vast majority of Australians would be hard pressed to name 3 players of their local A League team (though I suspect even 3 is a gross overestimate). Until we crack the media we will continue to be an irrelevancy despite football being the highest participation sport in Aus. Media coverage creates interest. Interest encourages eyeballs on TV and bums on seats at games. Bums on seats at games creates atmosphere. Atmosphere creates excitement.Eyeballs on TV stimulates revenue for the networks. Excitement and crowds encourages sponsorship. Sponsorship creates revenue. Revenue increases resources available to the clubs. Increased resources means a better quality of football and so the cycle grows. So again i ask, what are Football Australia, the APL and the individual clubs doing to promote the game? There are no obvious signs of them doing anything. You can employ as many people as you want in a marketing department, but that will not resolve the mainstream media issue. Nor will traditional advertising, which is very expensive and has little cut-through on its own. Coca Cola and McDonalds can use saturation marketing because they already have the size and budgets to do so effectively,. Two realities with mainstream media (1) They will protect their interests. The SMH not reporting on any A-League games, or even Corica's sacking, is not by accident, it is intentional. There were media releases and social media posts, they chose to ignore it. And for the same reason, they have been pumping article after article about Rugby Australia and the 'super star' players that league / union are allegedly fighting to sign. Ever wonder why there have been article after article about the potential sacking of the Chairman given that union has very little support / interest, significantly less than football. But importantly, their media deal is with Channel 9, who own SMH. So we are saturated with rugby articles and the A-League or NBL is intentionally ignored (2) They are lazy. It is easier to employ some rugby league or AFL or cricket hack and let them write as many easy / crappy articles every day to fill 15 pages of sport news. Those same people have no interest in providing diverse sports coverage, because they do not like/care about the sport. It is imperative to get a good TV deal with a well established, and diverse, media network. This is not a cop-out for the poor administration of clubs though, they can certainly achieve a lot more through direct / local channels rather than mass marketing. The running of many clubs has been deplorable, and many of those same people are now in control of the whole competition.

I agree with your analysis. You can apply the same story with Channel 7 and there link with the AFL. It is also true that FTA stations have invested billions on their chosen football codes. The same can be said of their respective print media family. Don't expect fair play from them. For football, that leaves only one commercial FTA left. Good media exposure is far more important than money. Football needs a long term relationship with a commercial FTA station (either SBS or Channel 10). My view is that they should not be courted for any major football event. What did FFA get from Channel 7 with regards to the Women's World Cup? The code needs to be bold. Take on the AFL and NRL as a winter comp. The station does not have to win the ratings, but build up its competitiveness. Credibility comes with an improved product. Ratings will follow.

Melbourne Derby ticket sales looking very poor. I know this game is traditionally played the week before Xmas, but 2 days before Xmas this year probably isn't the smartest idea.

Yeah, I won't be able to make that one due to a family xmas get-together. I wonder if boxing day would have been a better option. Might have got some extra casual going to the game after the cricket.

You wouldnt really want a bunch of fans, who have been sitting in the sun for 8 hours and consumed enough beer to kill a herd of elephants, stumble across the road to watch a game they arent to familiar with mate... could be chaos.

Maybe not, but Melbourne City FC can't be too picky when it comes to fans. Anyone will do in their situation. I admit it's a bit of a weird thing to me as well, but you see it happening during the Australian Open as well. A bunch of casuals always come from the tennis to the football.
