So we have a thread for the olyroos and matildas but thought it might be worth having one for all the other Olympic sports. I don’t usually follow other sports during the year but I’m keen to watch as many AUSSIEs compete as I can.

Doesn't seem to be much interest this time- for obvious reasons (they should not be held in a country that doesn't what them because of covid)
There was a time when people knew the name of many Australian track and field athletes- now I don't know any of them and have no interest in them- many people I know feel the same.
The Australian media still go into ecstasies over Aussie swimmers and talk them up all the time. That's a good reason for taking no interest in them- can't stand competitive swimming and the show off swimmers,
I'm happy to watch boxing and field hockey- pity we can only see them once every four years. As for shooting, I would rather watch grass grow. Archery- they don't even use proper bows, they use high tech contraptions that you can hold at full draw for a minute or so.
And I don't want to listen to aussie commentators screaming for aussie gold, whilst ignoring any non-aussie achievement.

I'm looking forward to it. Won't be the same without the crowds but in many ways I'm a simple man: put on a sport with an Aussie in it and I can cheer.

Always enjoyed the Olympics. Going to be different but hopefully the sport will prevail and it'll be something to enjoy. Early events on soon and it all kicks off very soon.
The official website only starts becoming very informative once the events actually start. By that I mean the start lists for all the heats in the swimming haven't been uploaded yet. They also don't necessarily appear in the overwhelmingly massive daily schedule until very close to the event. The filter per country was good last time but that doesn't seem available yet. It was very easy having a daily chronological list of all Australian participants.

We peaked in 2000. Funding wise, other countries are matching/exceeding us. Unless there is heavy investment again, I can't see us reaching our previous heights (not to mention the home team advantage).

I suppose the new sports allowed in contributed to this. In other press I saw something on "predicters" re medals, were meant to be getting a motza of Gold, amazing where all this comes from.

Hopefully with the Brisbane announcement, we will get more funding and reach new heights by that stage. This time, we will still get a respectable top 10 (maybe top 5) result.

Good to see :) I'm incredibly surprised at our results. I've not seen any reporting on certain top athletes not making it to the games. Perhaps Australia had some of the most comfortable preparation in Covid conditions. Fairly free in training but the big rivals would've set themselves up the best anyway.

Glad they got in Kumi Taguchi from SBS to give some cultural context to things the 7 bogans would have no clue about.
The Olympic rings made from wood from trees planted by athletes in the 1960 Tokyo games is a nice touch.
I'm sure it would have been a much bigger show if not for covid, such a shame.

All these fans crowded together long streets. Thank God they're not sitting in the arena in a chess board system with distance.
It just baffles me how they couldn't even come up with a safe concept to allow just a few in to watch the beach volleyball or judo. Meanwhile plenty of officials and even relatives appeared to be at the shooting.

7Plus works fine with VPN for the normal 7 channels. If I click on a specific sport channel ending in, say, TOK11 I get the error message. Annoying but the vast majority of things will either be on 7 live or ZDF. UK viewers were shocked to learn of the Discovery rights purchase pushing it all to Disney and Eurosport. German broadcaster sub licences everything Eurosport shows here.

Terrific world record and gold by the Aussies in the women's 4x100. It was cute when the Canadian team gave their silver medals to each other, they might have just started a tradition.
Good to see the Japanese girl get the gold in the individual medley, they needed a win.

Smith with a bronze which is great for medley. Germans were massively disappointed in their swimmer. Bit disappointed about Barty. Those silly gold projections nail on every decent chance and dream upset.

Very impressive last gasp effort to get the bronze in the men's 4x100 freestyle, we weren't expected to do that we'll.
Titmus obviously the star of the show today.
Two young Aussies coming 9th in semi finals, missing finals by single hundredths of a second each, but both taking it admirably.

I would have paid to see this on Optus or Kayo instead of channel 7
The on demand service is shit. Only about 20% full replays of some events. Its not like rights are an issue as they are listed to be available for 5 months. Throwing a full replay up doesnt take much effort
There is also no "coming soon" section like other live sports apps. Instead when an event starts it just magically appears in the live section and then disappears when it is finished. This may not be a problem but they arent showing all events
Its not often there is an Olympics in prime time and not often half the country are on stay at home orders. This is such a wasted opportunity for channel 7 to sell itself. SO much money and planning and this is the best they were able to do

yes frigging annoying when your having to change from channel to channel staying on the coverage your watching. Other than that, hey I'm thankful there is sport to watch whilst were in lockdown. Complain complain is todays norm and I'm guilty as well But I have to spin the positives. Seeing the varying sports is good, not all some suck or take too long like the cycling (yes I admire their fitness etc) but its a wlecome relief. I'm not a full on WFH, during the week I can still go to my office to break the monotomy of being in the one place thankfully and the wife LOL.......

+xMy favorite sports to watch have been water polo, hockey and archery Lots of people have been hooked on archery and other events they otherwise wouldnt watch. This is where 7 need to stop trying to guess what is popular and simply present all content in a non bias way. We dont want to just see Aussies and gold Its not hard to publish a full replay and their Olympics team should be at it around the clock

+xMy favorite sports to watch have been water polo, hockey and archery Agreed plus more. The gym floor comps are pretty mad for you normally don't go out of your way to watch. I cringe when watching them on the pummel horse or floor - the thought of breaking something with the landing makes me grab my ankle or picture broken legs. The heights they generate is impressive. The beam, omg another disaster waiting to happen. The rapids are pretty cool, I'm a surfer of the past so watching that now competing is pretty cool. Rowing. The fitness of the water polo. I'd like to see more table tennis.

As much as we whinge about poor coverage in the media re: football imagine those poor buggers. Constantly winning or near winning world cups and Olympic golds and you'd be lucky to hear about them.

Not really, European nations are really strong in hockey. Netherlands in particular. It's up there with Union as a pretty worldwide sport. maybe its the cricket DNA MCG. We've always been handy with any sort of racket/stick in our hands plus we've always had that aggression that seems to be needed in team sports as well.

+xI don't know why we had our weakest swimmer at the end for the relay Incredible swim by the other teams. Had a glimpse at the times. The heat swimmers seemed to have the edge. The order was bad and we seemed incredibly complacent. It evens out that you get some surprise wins and losses but the relay was something we'd been banking on. Canoeing again today. Last time they were both in it and it went bad at the end. I feel canoeing should add up all race times for an overall score.

Fox wins gold. Crazy to think she was favoured in the other event but made an error. The guy was second in the semi but had a tough final. Add Chalmers and the relay plus the surfing and we could've been in double figures for gold by now.

Another gold for Mckeown, fuck yeah! Hopefully Titmus to back that up in the 800m free on now, taking on Ledecky again.
Good to see Risely through, he had a faster time than a few of the guys that qualified in the first three places so I would have been salty if he didn't go through.
I'm not sure it's been mentioned on here, but Thorpe's commentary is excellent.
China pulling ahead in the gold and overall medal tally, probably something we should get used to seeing.

Did anyone catch the 10,000 run last night? An Aussie guy is collapsing and in all sorts trying to finish the race and Bruce McAvaney is frothing at the mouth with the biggest stiffy you've ever seen, total prick.

3 wins from 3 and the Boomers enter the quarter finals as a seeded team. Luck of the draw to potentially avoid USA in the semis. They bottled it in the 2019 world championships in the semis and third place playoff, hopefullly they can do at least one better here.

A warning for a false start unsettling the field in the 100m heats and someone else gets a disqualification in the restart, that sucks.

+xDid not see that coming! Rowan Browning winning his 100m heat in 10.01 seconds! Fastest ever by an Aussie in the Olympics. His previous PB was 10.05. One of the fastest qualifiers for the semis. We've never had an Aussie male in the 100m final since Melbourne 1956. He got an ATAR of 99+. Bloody hell.

Holy shit the Czechs are narrowly ahead of the USA in the basketball just before half time. Their best player plays for Chicago Bulls, last I Czeched.
USA are virtually guaranteed to qualify in at least a best 3rd place, but a loss could mean they'd advance as a non-seeded team, and we could possibly face them in the quarter finals.

+xHopefully 7 get the memo and don't talk all over the men's final intro as well. As much as he's a complete flog, McAvaney doesn't normally do stuff like that. I've noticed it during swimming, athletics and a few other events that when there is no aussie competing they tend to just gloss over everything and talk about something else.

Another day of gold for Australia. McKeon the most successful Olympian ever now. 20 medals in the pool, 9 gold. Only two gold off the Americans. It appears we've never been that close on the gold tally. 12 medals ahead of GB. It doesn't feel like it as GB and China always seemed to be harassing in the pool.

Hey how was that Kookburras pens win, I've never seen it done that way, was great contest and brilliant wipeout done by us. Great medicine considering our covid situation.

That's a shame, Risley had a much better season best than that, he just couldn't come back from the back of the pack. That's his last race.
Good on the two guys who fell over finishing their race with honour.

I really hope this showboating Qatari prick in the high jump doesn't win anything tonight, but he's way in front so far.
Sweden-based son of an athlete Qatar poached from Sudan.
Won gold in the last two Asian Games and the last two IAAF World Championships, the last of which was held in Doha. Silver and bronze in the last two Olympic games.

yer Pala, agreed about the high jumper but yes he did redeem himself in sharing the medal with the other show pony Italian haha.... Sure was a consuming battle amongst 5/6 jumpers incl our Starc. (great seeing the coverage going back to his bro viewing the cricket team) Can't believe how high they can jump, near on the height of our football crossbar. Unbelieveable Italy getting the 100M Gold. Got to say I'm happy - the Euro Cup win seems to have inspired Italian competitors. Kudos to our Aussies at the track, been great viewing. MCG, what you too busy to catch up on each days events ?

With all the concerns as we know re athletes having interupted trainings/covid etc its a hoot seeing our Aussies being so competitive...... The beach volleyball last night was epic to watch, yes Canada are no1 current WChamps and funnily ours with them trained together prior getting to Japan so they knew each others game inside out. How was the mens pole vault, damn thats HIGH ! I know were not horse type followers or maybe some are but no mention of 62yr old Hoy winning another medal few days back. Got to give kudos to him like thats mad, oldest everything record I suppose. Rapt the mens hockey, how they manage to control that small hard ball is brilliant stuff, our 1st goal was a cracker. I'm a golfer pity our boys missed competing for the bronze but right now the womens we have a strong pairing of Minjee Lee/Hannah Green, Lee won her 1st Major just the other week. Love to see the Boomers do the USA next. Opals today. Bol tonight. Pity were not as strong as in the past re indoor cycling.

haha, yer I hear you but isn't this todays norm, question everything. To me the sport depics how your competing normally at the beach - in your swim togs. So I suppose thats how they decided the competing attire. I'm sure the ladys gear has got smaller tighter as the years have gone by (what kit hasn't in todays sports ie our football,NRL etcetc), doesn't bother me but I'm sure certain activist groups think otherwise. You could bring up the womens athletics attire as well (and floor diciplines), are pretty skimpy - some not. Am I wrong to say I love it :)

“Beach volleyball was a sport that was developed in Hawaii and Southern California and on the beaches of Rio,” Ross said. “And you play, and it’s hot, and then you go and jump in the water.”
One-piece bathing suits won’t work, because the sand gets inside and chafes; in fact, the players say, the less material that can trap sand, the better. Ross and her partner Alix Klineman, who helped design their own uniforms, also said it’s important that the straps don’t restrict her movement or breathing.
“For us, this is what feels most comfortable,” Klineman said. “You’re not wearing more clothing in really hot weather; getting sand stuck in places is not fun. But I totally respect other people wanting to be more covered if that’s what makes them more comfortable.”
Beach volleyball matches also proceed in all kinds of weather, including the rain from the leading edge of Typhoon Nepartak that dampened the Skiokaze Park venue this week. In Beijing, the Olympic championship was played in a downpour.
“This,” said American Misty May-Treanor, who was soaking wet but with a gold medal to show for it, “is just another reason why we play in bathing suits.”
Some teams did wear leggings and long sleeves under their uniforms on the cooler nights in 2012, dismaying the London tabloids, but even then most opted for the traditional board shorts and bikinis.
Four years later, after the FIVB expanded Olympic qualifying in an attempt to spread the sport to new countries, the Egyptians played in long sleeves, a loose-fitting top, full-length pant legs and hijabs to cover their heads.
“I have worn the hijab for 10 years,” said Doaa Elghobashy, a member of the first beach volleyball team from her country to compete in the Olympics.
“It doesn’t keep me away from the things I love to do,” she said. “And beach volleyball is one of them.” https://chicago.suntimes.com/2021/7/27/22595788/why-olympic-beach-volleyball-players-wear-bikinis-uniforms-unitards-gymnastics

Fair enough. Would have thought neck to knee suits would keep more sand out though. With a bikini you've got top and bottom of both pieces but with a one piece you only have a top and a bottom. But hey, if they're allowed to and they want to I'm not saying they shouldn't. Just thought watching that match last night the tall Canadian looked like she was wearing togs that were 3 sizes too small and it looked weird.

From that article:
https://chicago.suntimes.com/2021/7/27/22595788/why-olympic-beach-volleyball-players-wear-bikinis-uniforms-unitards-gymnastics
The attention on the bikinis intensified in Tokyo after a viral social media post misidentified a team that protested a beach handball dress code as playing beach volleyball. Beach handball, which is not an Olympic sport, requires women to wear bikinis, and the European federation fined the Norwegians for wearing shorts as a protest at a competition 5,500 miles away in Bulgaria. In Tokyo this week, the German gymnastics team wore full-legged unitards that went down to their ankles, eschewing the traditional bikini cut that ends high on the hip. The athletes said they were trying to combat the sexualization of young women and girls in their sport, which is trying to recover from a decades-long sexual abuse scandal.

There was a recent episode where the Norwegian women's beach handball team was recently fined for wearing shorts in a competition in Bulgaria which I've anecdotally heard more than one person unwittingly conflate with Olympic beach volleyball, but of course that's a different competition in a different sport.
Edit: Yep that's the one.

Opals got owned unfortunately. Always been our bogey same for the mens. Re Bol the slow pace from the beginning imo ruined his run for it forced him to lead pick up the pace, that used up that bit of kicker needed on the straight to finish line. Shame but 4th is very credible for him and us good on him. Todays interests...... There is a lot of excitement ahead on Thursday, with highlights including Australia’s women’s beach volleyball semi-final against Latvia at 11:00am, the Boomers up against the US in their basketball semi-final at 2:00pm, the Matildas v USA bronze medal match at 6:00pm, the men’s hockey gold medal match featuring the Kookaburras and Belgium at 8:00pm and the conclusion to the men’s decathlon in which Aussie Ash Moloney is currently placed second. All times AEST.

+xFfs Boomers. Leading by 15 and just getting fancy and letting America play their game. So disappointing. Had they been behind the whole time I'd understand but a 15 point lead?! Leading us on and blowing it late in both the Olympics and the last world championship. The team is almost as disappointing as the generation. There's a joke in there about a bunch of guys who have much more money than the rest of us and don't do any good, but I can't find it.

That trans weightlifter also failed in the snatch. Which is a shame, because she worked her bollocks off to get there.

Farking losing to America everywhere.
2024 will be interesting, USA will host 2028 so you’d expect them to top the medals there
anyone been watching the Sports Climbing? It’s pretty interesting

It’s pretty interesting Yeah I've been watching the climbing at night but because they don't explain what's going on I can't follow why or what they're trying to do. Speed climbing yes. Fastest wins. The other stuff, haven't a clue. Just watched a replay where the girl missed the world record by 0.01 seconds so presumably they're racing the same course everywhere they go?

My mate who's into sports climbing is livid with the coverage, he reckons they had a rugby commentator who had no idea how the sport worked. I told him he now knows how I feel as a football fan in Australia.

Bouldering is like a puzzle, you have to figure out how to get to the two zones, lead climbing is basically who can get furthest to the top. Don’t ask me about the scoring, because there’s only 1 medal they’ve had to combine all the scores which is messy. Next Olympics they’re giving Speed Climbing its own medal, and bouldering and lead climbing will be combined.
It’s a bit unfair at the moment if you’re a specialist in Speed Climbing.

A beautiful choir singing the Japanese national anthem at the start of the closing ceremony, and 7's bogan commentator (I think it was Griggs) talks all over it, ffs.

Up to the handover segment to France and Thomas Pesquet is playing La Marseillaise on the saxophone with Japan in the window from the fucking International Space Station and the bogan 7 commentators still talk over it.

The CGI for that flag though... apparently the weather conditions didn't allow them to fly it for real but really they could have done a better job than that

yes the flag off the tower looked weird/funny BUT this is covid times - seen alot of weird shit nowadays haven't we. Got to say, maybe its been due to lockdown ? well yes no for I've always enjpoyed following the olympics but I guess in these global challenging times maybe it meant more. Got to hand it to the Japs even though a % of the locals weren't impressed and I get it BUT really you can see its been a kind of therapy for many around the world. Kudos to all the athletes - training not like they expected pre covid. We all look at our medal tally and those above But I looked right through to the bottom with a bronze only. All of those countries making up the bottom half must be rapted just for 1medal let alone those in double digits. USA would have been happy toppling China, just. How was the arrogance shown once again by their BB winning team, sad people. Did I recall watching a marathon looking easier as I did yesterday ? unbelieveable, it wasn't just the humidity knocking off contenders it was his pace blowing them off. He looked so composed from start to finish, unreal what a Champion. Giggles on the 2nd Somalian stirring on his fellow contryman to 3rd. That was epic to watch and the ecstacy of the 3 of them at the finish is what its all about.

On the balance of things I also enjoyed the Olympics. I think things being 1 hour behind helped immensely as there was no waiting up til ridiculous hours to watch anything. And Also despite my previous criticisms, having the app was awesome as you could watch what you wanted instead of a forced select few sports we are used to seeing in the days of FTA. I dont think we have been this spoiled for choice during an Olympics
The only disappointment is, as mentioned, the lack of full replays. Channel 7 really should have dedicated a few resources to spitting them out as the events occurred. Now the Olympics are over and they seem to only have a back-catalog of about 10%
Take the Volleyball for instance. If you wanted to watch a game it meant 2 1/2 hours of missing something else. Now would be a perfect time to go through a back catalog of dozens of games especially since they are leaving their Olympics replays there for 4 months. Instead there are only 5 or 6 games for mens and womens
There was so much I missed due to overlapping events and there is no way to watch them unless Australia participated or there was a medal. A real lost opportunity and a downer on what otherwise was a thoroughly enjoyable experience

yes Thanks for starting up the thread MCG. Archery, olympic inspired be careful lol..... bb2, yes the time diff really helped us thats sure and bonus. IF it was in EU or USA I would have watched more replays compared to seeing so much "live" that makes for great viewing. Forgetting the Ch7 hurdles jumping one station to another how it goes But I do hear you missing seeing other sports that would have been great to see. Broadcasters set up programming what suits the Nation as expected.
