Because Russia has about 1,500 nuclear warheads it might be prepared to use to get its way, or at least prevent the West from getting its way. Regardless of the ethics and morality of its actions they have significant bargaining power, and if we want peace then the West (and Ukraine) is going to need to make some concessions. Well, by that logic, then the West should fold on every advance Post made by Russia, and the rest of the world should also fold under whatever a nuclear power wants. Its not about folding its about negotiating a peaceful settlement, and successful negotiation typically means both sides make some concessions to reach an agreement. Maybe Putin recognising that he’s not going to win, backs down and slinks back into his cave inside the Kremlin. But that is unlikely to happen, as dictators and despots typically dont like to surrender or show weakness. Whats more likely is that Putin will continue to leverage the tools at his disposal, including nuclear threats, to achieve his strategic objectives. If that fails, and it probably will, then with no other option he may resort to dropping nuclear bombs to further signify his resolve and force Ukraine into submission. The big question is how does the West respond? If we respond with nuclear bombs then there is a strong risk of all out nuclear armageddon and one billion people or more dying. So you have to measure that dire scenario against the far less insidious one of handing a few parts of Ukraine to Russia and cancelling their aspirations to join NATO. Even though all out nuclear may be unlikely, the costs of getting it wrong are obviously catastrophic. Fair point. But at the end of the day, this is Ukraine's decision if they want to give things up. Russia is the aggressor against Ukraine and shouldn't be in Ukraine in the first place. Currently, Ukraine think they can defeat the invasion, so I can't see any deal or concession being done. So what's gonna happen is Putin will probably hit Ukraine even harder, which will create this into a protracted war draining Russia and Ukraine of resources. You say Russia has more power and leverage, and that may be true, but having more power and leverage doesn't win the day if things become protracted, and there is an insurgency. Essentially, it will require Russia to station 500k troops in Ukraine to hold it (more than half their active military), with all these economic sanctions in place. I can't see Russia being able to sustain this and will more likely implode (although China could prop it up).

+x+xA Russian colleague (been here two years) who has never said anything political or against Putin is totally dismayed. Almost to the point of being distraught at work. In his opinion Putin is a mad man trying to bring back USSR. He said the problem is nobody gets any truth in Russia.
Also spoke to friends in Ukraine last night. They just left ipina where very heavy fighting.
They said everyone is surprised by how poor the Russian equipment is. They said they thought they had bad equipment but the Russian stuff was bad. The problem is there is a lot of money and soldiers for them to sacrifice.
I was sent some videos that are heartbreaking. Russian soldiers basically kids themselves that have been sacrificed by Putin and laying across a freeway in pierces. Cannon fodder. The Ukrainian people are victims but also some of these soldiers from the backwoods of Siberia don’t know what the hell is going on.
Utterly pointless. On a positive note the Ukrainians are very heartened by all the support they are receiving. But they do not expect this to be over soon.
I think they and smart Russians are hoping for Putin to meet his demise from the inner circle.
I think its corruption within Russia. Everyone skimming a bit when it comes to supplies so the end result is junk. You're right those. The end result is dead Russians and Ukrainians who want none of this. So pointless. Exactly what my Ukrainian mates said. Oligarchs skimming and scrimping making billions with military contracts. They now have tonnes of useless equipment through corruption.

+xA Russian colleague (been here two years) who has never said anything political or against Putin is totally dismayed. Almost to the point of being distraught at work. In his opinion Putin is a mad man trying to bring back USSR. He said the problem is nobody gets any truth in Russia.
Also spoke to friends in Ukraine last night. They just left ipina where very heavy fighting.
They said everyone is surprised by how poor the Russian equipment is. They said they thought they had bad equipment but the Russian stuff was bad. The problem is there is a lot of money and soldiers for them to sacrifice.

I'm on twitter a bit scouring for videos of what's going on. Found a couple of accounts where they are posting up captured soldiers. The majority are saying as far as they knew they were on exercises or coming to help Ukraine. Of course take that with a grain of salt because you'd say anything with a gun to your head but quiet a few of them seem just glad to be inside and out of danger. (So many young kids.) The videos that I have been sent are obviously not allowed on socials and tbh I have stop getting or looking as it's just too much mentally The bad bit is if you are a villager or soldier in remote unit you really have not much option but to kill anyone you catch. Do you let them go back to their unit so they get you later? You cant really take prisoners - where do you keep them? Very risky
